Berdi Kerbabayev, Sovyet devri Türkmen edebiyatının kurucularından birisidir.Şiir başta olmak üzere edebiyatın hemen hemen bütün türlerinde eser vermiştir.Ancak daha çok nesir türünde verdiği eserleriyle tanınmaktadır.Onun Ayğıtlı Adım(Kararlı Adım) adlı romanı, Trükmen edebiyatının ilk romanlarındandır.Hatta basım tarihi itibarıyla ilk Türkmen romanıdır.Yazar, 1916-1920 yılları arası Türkmenistan'ını anlattığı bu tarihi romanını yirmi yıla yakın bir sürede tamamlamıştır.

Berdi was a Soviet Turkmen writer, the national writer of the Turkmen SSR (1967), an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Turkmen SSR (1951) and a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union since 1948.
He was born in a peasant family. Until 1917 he studied at the aul school (mektebo), then in the Bukhara madrasah.
He participated in the Basmach movement (detachment of Eziz Khan Chapyk). In May 1919, he sided with the Red Army. During the Civil War, he served as an employee of the political department of the Trans-Caspian Front.
In 1919-1924 he worked as a district instructor and head of the volost department of public education, chairman of the volost executive committee. In 1927-1928 he studied at the Leningrad Institute of Oriental Studies. In 1924-1934 - at the editorial work (in the newspaper "Turkmenistan", in the journal "Tokmak", in the State Publishing House of Turkmenistan). In 1934-1936 he was the head of the science department under the People's Commissariat of the Turkmen SSR. In 1942-1950, he was chairman of the board of the Union of Writers of the Turkmen SSR, later he was elected as a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Turkmen SSR, a member of the Committee on Stalin Prizes.

Сколько не делай хорошего — сделаешь больше плохого. Это объясняется наглядно, хотя бы с помощью литературного труда Берды Кербабаева. Перед читателем туркменский народ, ещё не скинувший путы царизма. Царизм был настолько бесчеловечен к туркменам, что дал этому народу свободу от рабства над самим собой, позволил участвовать в битвах на полях сражений Мировой войны, построил в пустыне железную дорогу. Теперь туркмены смогли вздохнуть спокойно, найдя управу на местных царьков, они оказались способны на равных сражаться с европейцами и, самое главное, отныне один вагон заменял караван из ста верблюдов, доставляя к нужному месту не за месяцы пути, а всего лишь за один или несколько дней. Обрадовавшись этому, вскоре туркмены озлобились на царизм, поскольку их лишили рабства, стали призывать на войну и отказали в праве на продолжение существования по собственному усмотрению. Вот потому и было сказано: сколько не делай хорошего — сделаешь больше плохого.
