These Chunkier-Than-Thou Flannels Are Everything I’ve Ever Wanted

When it comes to flannel shirts, good ones are hard to come by.

Flannel shirts are a dime a dozen, but good ones are diamonds in the rough. The top tier of today’s menswear brands are constantly referencing vintage flannels from the likes of Five Brother and Pendleton, minutely dissecting their beefy flannels in an attempt to chase down that perfect plaid. Standing out among them is Wax London.

Founded in 2016, Wax London is a contemporary menswear label with a focus on quality British outerwear. Its gamut of goods spans from brushed twill chinos to soft alpaca sweaters and overcoats that pair perfectly with the English countryside. The brand excels at fabrics and perhaps the best example of that is in its flannel overshirts.

Milled and sewn in Portugal, the layer-friendly pieces are cut from archival plaids that date as far back as the 1950s (aka, plaid prime time), each with Campbells-chunky yarns on full display. The result is a kaleidoscopic range of heirloom-quality shirts with dual chest pockets and beautiful corozo nut buttons. Turns out, they do make ’em like they used to.
