Housewifery

A Manual and Text Book of Practical Housekeeping

by Lydia Ray Balderston

Review

Housewifery: A Manual and Text Book of Practical Housekeeping is intended to be the ultimate resource guide for homemakers. Written by Lydia Ray Balderston it contains advice and techniques for every aspect of the home.

As you would expect from a book portending to be a manual and textbook for homemakers, Housewifery includes entries on a wide range of topics of interest to those tasked with maintaining the home. The book begins with an introductory chapter in which Balderston explains that a housewife should view her job as a man does his, and that a woman should strive to be as proficient in matters of the home as a man is in manners of business. While this is clearly an old-fashioned approach to the matter of housekeeping, the introduction serves to prepare the reader for the subject matter of this text. Balderston's book is divided into chapters, each of which deals with a different aspect of housekeeping. Topics covered include plumbing, heating and lighting, household supplies, storage, cleaning, renovations, disinfectants, household pests, and several others. The breadth and depth of information contained within this book is quite astounding.

Housewifery: A Manual and Text Book of Practical Housekeeping is a product of a time in which household work was solely the domain of women. While the context may have changed, the need for a clean, safe home and the best way to obtain one has not.

Excerpt

This handbook of practical housekeeping is offered to women in the hope that it may show in some measure how to reduce tasks in the home and how to save time, money, and energy. This book will be of direct help to the many women who do their own work or supervise household employes and who are seeking guidance by consulting reference books as other professional workers do. The book is the outgrowth of many years of experience in house keeping and in teaching housewifery to groups of practical house keepers, with emphasis upon the technical processes oi the home. It is designed to help not Only the individual home woman but to serve as a text for study groups of rural extension and other club women and in the housekeepers' courses given by schools and colleges. Any further study of the sciences, directly or indirectly connected with housewifery, may be carried on by means of the references suggested throughout the book.

Because of the many requests from former students, who are now teachers, for a book that brings housewifery topics within one cover, the author offers these suggestions from her experience. It is hoped that the outline of courses, the bibliography, and the sug gestions for laboratory supervision will meet the need so often expressed by teachers.
