Topline

Deobra Redden, the 30-year-old man who went viral last week for attacking a judge during a sentencing hearing, was sentenced to 19 to 48 months in prison for the felony battery he was initially in court for, according to the Associated Press, though he faces new felony counts for the attack on the judge.

Key Facts

Redden, who was outfitted with shackles, a mask and mitts in his appearance Monday, the AP reported, was sentenced to up to four years in prison over an attack he made on a person with a baseball bat last year.

Last week, at a hearing for the attempted battery charge, Redden told Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus that he had moved beyond his violent past, which failed to convince Holthus, who said she still intended to sentence him to prison.

Holthus’ decision enraged Redden, who then leaped over the stand and tackled the judge before being wrangled off by a clerk and multiple officers.

Redden was sent back to jail on a $54,000 bail on charges stemming from the attack on Holthus and was charged with extortion, coercion with force and battery on a protected person, after he had previously been freed while awaiting his initial sentencing.

Holthus sustained minor injuries and shortly returned to work while one officer was left with a dislocated shoulder and head injury requiring hospitalization.

Tangent

Holthus is also presiding over the criminal case of alternate electors who allegedly signed false certificates in support of former President Donald Trump’s attempt to obstruct the 2020 presidential election, according to Politico.

Key Background

Redden was initially charged with assault in the bat attack case but later had the charge reduced to attempted battery resulting in substantial injuries through a plea deal made with prosecutors. The Nevada man’s attack on Holthus went viral online last week, with clips of the incident racking up millions of views. Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson described Redden as someone who has been "violent his entire adult life,” according to the AP.
