This 19th-century monument is a favorite meeting point for locals and a gateway to the city’s shopping districts, historic attractions and vibrant Cultural Quarter.

Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower is a notable landmark embellished with intricate craftsmanship. Take pictures of this iconic monument and admire the statues adorning the four corners.

Erected in 1868, the clock tower sits on the site of ancient trading markets and at the confluence of five busy streets. It marks the spot where the town crier would once have read proclamations to the general public. Today, it serves as a social gathering point and a crossroads between Leicester’s commercial, entertainment and historical districts.

Gaze up at the tall structure and notice how it stands out against a backdrop of more contemporary buildings. Look for typical features of Gothic-style architecture such as pointed arches and spires.

Examine the stone statues on the tower, which celebrate four of the city’s most important benefactors. One depicts Simon de Montfort, who led a revolt against King Henry III in the 13th century. Another portrays the wealthy wool merchant William Wyggeston. The other statues are of Gabriel Newton and Sir Thomas White, whose fortunes were used to found notable schools and charities.

Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower is a great place from where to explore Leicester’s city center on foot. Enjoy some retail therapy at Haymarket Shopping Centre and Highcross Leicester. Both malls contain a range of chain stores, independent retailers, fast food joints and restaurants.

Stroll west along pedestrian-only streets to Leicester Cathedral, which houses the tomb and relics of King Richard III. Learn about the life and legends of this famous king of England at the King Richard III Visitor Centre. This area is also home to the 600-year-old timber-framed Guildhall building.

East of the clock tower is the Cultural Quarter. Here, Victorian-era buildings have been turned into fashion outlets and galleries, standing alongside craft beer pubs, cocktail bars and live music venues. Watch a performance at the Curve Theatre.

Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower is a 10-minute walk from Leicester Railway Station. Ride public buses, which stop nearby or drive. Parking is available for a fee at Haymarket Shopping Centre and Highcross Leicester.
