Directed by Francois Truffaut.

Lyrical meditation on love, friendship and fatal obsession, featuring Jeanne Moreau at her

most beguiling. This adaptation of Henri-Pierre Roché’s semi-autobiographical 1953 novel

was a huge success at the time of its release and is still regarded as one of Truffaut’s

greatest films. The emotions of this tragic ménage-à-trois are sensitively enriched by

Georges Delerue’s musical score and the widescreen black-and-white cinematography of

Raoul Coutard who uses freeze frames and hand-held camerawork to maximum effect in a

classic of the French new wave which became a huge influence on world cinema of the

1960s. Truffaut’s reputation grew enormously after the success of Jules et Jim, but for him

the ultimate compliment came when one of his idols, Jean Renoir, told the young director

that he wished he had made this film. The session will be presented by John Newman and

Michael O’Rourke who will host a discussion after the screening.

Henri-Pierre Roché’s novel is available as a Penguin paperback and is also on Kindle.
