CELANDINE POPPY
Stylophorum diphyllum, commonly called the celandine-poppy or woods-poppy, is an herbaceous plant in the poppy family (Papaveraceae). It is native to North America, where it is found in the eastern United States and Ontario. Its typical natural habitat is moist forests over calcareous rock, particularly in ravines.
It is cultivated for its bright yellow flowers. The common name is derived from greater celandine (Chelidonium majus), a closely related European plant with similar flowers and leaves.
In spring, the deep yellow flowers of the celandine poppy appear as a brilliant display on the forest floor. The flowers have 4 yellow petals, two soon-falling sepals, many yellow-orange stamens, and a single knobby stigma. They appear singly or in umbels of two to four flowers from early spring to early summer. Plants grow to about 1.5 feet (0.46 m) tall, from underground rhizomes. Leaves are pinnately cut and lobed.
Plants are relatively long lived and readily self-seed under garden conditions.
Stylophorum diphyllum is a conservative species, and is somewhat uncommon throughout its range. Forest clearance is responsible for some of the loss.
Due to its limited distribution in Canada, it is listed under Ontario's Endangered Species Act, 2007, which protects the species and its habitat. One Ontario population of the wood poppy is in a conservation area.

GERMINATION
Seeds should be planted outdoors in late summer or fall, so that they will benefit from the cool and fluctuating temperatures of winter. In spring they will sprout, so be sure to mark the location that you planted the seeds. Please note, these seeds cannot grow without this cold period, so patience is required, though they are well worth the wait!
If you would prefer to start your seeds indoors, they will require a pattern of warm and cold periods. Once you receive your seeds, plant them in a pot, just under the surface of the soil. Water, and place at room temperature for 1 month. The seeds will not grow yet. Then, place the container in a clear plastic bag, and label the seeds (note the seeds are poisonous if eaten). Place the pot in a refrigerator for 3 months. Then, bring the pot back to warmth (room temperature). The seeds should germinate within 3 months, though if no growth appears, the seeds can be returned to the fridge for a second cold period (3 months).

LIMITED SUPPLY
Shop early for best selection! Due to inventory shortages, and increased demand worldwide, many seeds sell out quickly and we may not be able to obtain more for some time. Thank you for your understanding.
IMPORTANT
Your seeds are best planted right away. If you are not able to, they are best stored in a plastic zipper bag and placed in a dry cold location or refrigerator until you are ready to plant them. Be sure they are clearly labelled.
Do not eat the seeds or any part of the plants that they produce. Due to the fact that about 80% of all plant species are not edible (contain toxins/poisons of some kind) these are likely to be poisonous. Ornamental use only.
