The discussion over the possibility of a joint candidate has divided the Opposition that has little chance of winning the election anyway. The ambitions of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, and their attempts to keep the Congress restrained have queered the pitch for the Opposition.
