There is a new era beginning at Evangel University. Following the May 2014 retirement of President Robert H. Spence, who served as president of Evangel for 40 years, Dr. Carol Taylor has taken the helm as president. With the 2013 consolidation of Evangel, Central Bible College and Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, Evangel is now a comprehensive Christian university, offering undergraduate through doctoral degree programs. As a consolidated University, Evangel celebrates more than 190 years of rich history in Christian higher education.
Evangel University, the first Pentecostal liberal arts college chartered in America, opened its doors on September 1, 1955.In those early days, there were only a few men who dreamed about a school like Evangel, where Assemblies of God students’ faith would be nurtured and his or her life’s calling could be discovered. However, not everyone shared those dreams. It would take more than a desire to make Evangel a reality.The Rev. Ralph M. Riggs, general superintendent of the Assemblies of God at that time, was known as “Mr. Education” in the AG. Against some strong opposition from many members of the Assemblies of God, Riggs spearheaded the movement to create Evangel, and after several earlier attempts failed, the resolution to create Evangel finally passed at the 1953 General Council in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Evangel University is an awesome place to be for spiritual and intellectual development. Most of the professors are extremely helpful and knowledgeable, but there are a few to avoid. When meeting students from other universities at conferences and such, Evangel students are at least as well prepared

Evangel University was a great experience. I received an education equal or better than many other top name schools. The smaller college allows the opportunity to grow, participate and learn in areas which would not be open to every student at a larger university. Experience through hands on activity is just as important as the classroom lessons. Evangel provides both types of learning. The close interaction with the Professors is a life changing experience in itself.

Evangel University may be different now, but when I went there, it was great. I found it to be a great microcosm of society - haves and have nots, filled with people from all over the country. You know it's a Christian school with rules well before you go there, and it's not like you have a gun pointed to your head making you stay if you dislike it. Evangel was one of the very best experiences of my life. Because of it, I deal with my faith and life as a Christian with a much broader perspective.
