Born in Holyoke, she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Hazel (Wall) Horgan.
Mrs. Abbot attended Simmons College where she earned a Bacholers Degree in Nursing and Boston University where she earned her Masters Degree in Education. She practiced as a visiting nurse and taught public health in Boston until moving to Hanover, Massachusetts to raise her children. She was very active in local politics and environmentalism, serving as a Selectwoman, Chairman of the Conservation Commission and member of the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust. She was very interested in the theater, subscribing to the Huntington Theater (Boston), Trinity Rep (Providence) and Your Theater (New Bedford). While in Hanover she earned her pilot’s license and would explore the South Shore in a Piper Cherokee. After the retirement of her husband, she moved to South Dartmouth, Massachusetts where she spent time with family and friends, frequently entertaining at home or at the Wamsutta Club. Spending time with her family and friends was very important. She will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Laurence M. Carr and her husband William of Belmont, ME., and Amy E. Abbot, M.D. of Providence, RI and NYC; her grandchildren, Zachary Abbot Carr and Caroline E. Carr, and her great-grandson, Colby Carr. She was the sister of the late Mary Gibson.
Her Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, April 3, 2023 at 11:00am in St. Mary’s Church, 783 Dartmouth St. Dartmouth, MA 02748, followed by burial in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 1:15pm. In-lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
