If you’re shopping around for a high quality compact for yourself, a new graduate, or a retired couple, make sure that you take a hard look at the 2017 Ford Focus. It’s no wonder that this popular vehicle is now in its eighth generation. That’s because it has a lot going for it: available as a sedan or four-door hatchback body style, four main trim levels (S, SE, SEL, and Titanium) and a comfortable ride, sporty handling and lots of high-tech interior options. And Ford continues to update it. For the 2017 model year, Ford is introducing a new SEL package that now offers white gold as an exterior shade and provides a power moonroof, fog lamps, black headlight frames, and 17-inch machined aluminum wheels with black indents.

  • Performance

A blue 2017 Ford Focus Hatchback is racing around a track.

Ford has designed the Focus to be fun to drive. You’ll be impressed with its superb handling as you drive around turns, its suitably quiet interior cabin, and comfortable ride for you and your passengers. Ford has equipped the front-wheel-drive 2017 Ford Focus with a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 160 horsepower and 146 pounds-feet of torque. If you require a five-speed manual transmission, opt for the S trim.

On its SE sedan, Ford offers an optional turbocharged EcoBoost 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine producing 123 hp and 125 lbs-ft of torque, paired to a six-speed manual transmission. An SE EcoBoost Appearance package includes a six-speed automatic. Last year’s EPA estimated fuel economy for the 1.0-liter engine with the manual transmission was 30 city/41 highway, while the automatic posted 28 city/39 highway.

The Focus SE automatic posted zero to 60 mph in 9.0 seconds; with manual transmission it improves to 8.3 seconds.

  • Technology

The dashboard of a 2017 Ford Focus is shown with a race track in the window near Albany, NY.

Here’s the third area that will convince you of the popularity of the Ford Focus sedan. Not only is the technology on the Ford Focus useful but it’s fun. Ford engineers have elected to mount cameras and sensors at specific locations on the Focus to provide the driver with information about other vehicles and objects that are beside and behind the vehicle. These driver assist systems include BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with cross traffic alert and Lane Keeping System. Take, for example, the Reverse Sensing System lets you know when objects are directly behind you. The Active Park Assist system uses its high tech camera system to provide you with hands-free parallel parking. Never again will you have to struggle with fitting your Focus into a snug spot—the car does it for you.

And its technology will keep you informed and connected. The SYNC 3 infotainment touchscreen interface with voice-activated technology is easy to use and packed with features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

The 2017 Ford Focus is even equipped with technology that automatically controls the interior temperature of your vehicle and your steering wheel. The Dual-Zone Electronic Automatic Temperature Control personalizes your front seat and your passenger’s seat with individualized temperature settings. You’ll have three heat settings to choose from.

Ford Focus technology is also geared toward your safety. Won’t you and your family appreciate the Ford Sync system if you’re in an accident? That’s because it will automatically dial 911 in an emergency crash. For parents with teen drivers, Ford’s MyKey system is especially popular. The system is paired with a specific key fob that allows parents to limit the Edge’s top speed, keep the radio volume low, and add extra safety reminders every time the key is used.

  • Trims

A grey 2017 Ford Focus is drifting on a race track.

Not only does Ford provide engine choices for the Ford Focus, but also an array of trims. The base S sedan model is equipped with a variety of traditional features, such as air-conditioning, cloth upholstery, and power locks and mirrors. Where it takes a turn into more updated technology, you and your passengers will appreciate its easy-to-read 4.2-inch central display, Ford’s MyKey system, Sync voice controls, Bluetooth, and a four-speaker sound system with a CD player and two USB ports.

If you and your family are planning to use the Ford Focus for long distance drives and want comfort and convenience, the SE trim is worth a second look. To plan your driving route, you’ll find a trip computer. To make your drive more comfortable, you’ll be able to easily adjust the front headrest, rear air vents, and access controls mounted on the steering wheel. A six-speaker sound system with satellite radio will make the trip more pleasant. Just put the car into cruise control and enjoy the ride.

Ford has even seen fit to offer specific optional packages to its Focus SE trim owners. These are either the EcoBoost Appearance package or the Cold Weather package.

For those who really want to capture even more amenities, sit inside the SEL trim and imagine yourself on the highway. Its sunroof will give you plenty of fresh air and sunlight while its 10-speaker Sony audio system will compliment your drive. You can even set the interior to go along with your mood with its multicolor ambient interior lighting and dual-zone automatic climate control. The SEL trim offers some of the latest tech, such as the Sync 3 infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen and enhanced voice controls.

At the top-of-the-line is the Titanium trim, which gives its drivers some pampered and comfortable amenities not found in earlier trims. You’ll be treated to remote start, heated mirrors, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, supple leather upholstery, an eight-way power driver seat, and a rear center armrest. These will be especially appealing during those cold winter months.

For those who require extra safety precautions and the ultimate in driver assist systems, the Ford Focus can be equipped with such important systems as blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert or a system to alert you if your vehicle begins to depart its lane. This Titanium Technology package also provides you with a self parking system, thus taking the grief out of trying to park the vehicle yourself in a small space.
