Blue oat grass, or Helictotrichon sempervirens, is considered by many to be one of the most outstanding evergreen perennials. It can add movement and unique texture to almost any garden.

Narrow sharply pointed blue leaves form a dense 12- to 24-inch porcupine-like dome that looks good year round. In summer, slender stalks rise above the narrow leaves to offer delicate airy flowers that sway in the summer breezes.

Native to the Southern Alps of southwestern France and northwestern Italy, this graceful clump-forming grass can work well in sunny borders, on rocky slopes, in rock gardens and as featured accents. The striking blue-gray foliage of the blue oat grass also complements and combines well with other grasses in the garden.

This reliable decorative grass can grow well in most average, well-drained soils. Divide existing clumps or sow seeds in the spring. It is drought-tolerant, once established.
