Is this the strangest TV show plot EVER? New series Jane the Virgin follows girl whose doctor accidentally inseminates her

The world of television is about to get a little stranger - and a whole lot more dramatic.

Jane The Virgin is gearing up for its series premiere, and its plot line has already set tongues wagging.

The CW show follows a religious girl who has never had sex before, but ends up pregnant after her emotionally unstable doctor accidentally inseminates her.

Unsurprisingly the series, which stars Gina Rodriguez and Jaime Camil, is already causing quite a stir.

Would it happen in real life? Probably not. Does that make it any less entertaining? Definitely not.

Jane The Virgin is loosely based on the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen, which ran from March to October 2002, and discernibly winks at that by taking the over-the-top soap opera theme to another level.

In the pilot alone, viewers are taken on a wild ride while seeing, as the Latin Lover Narrator describes it, Jane’s world transform into her very own telenovela.

Complicated: Jane has never had sex, but gets pregnant and must tell her soon-to-be fiance Michael

Big mistake: While feeling emotionally unstable, a doctor mistakes the protagonist for her insemination patient

When Jane, played by fresh-faced star on the rise Gina Rodriguez, discovers she is expecting a child, she has a big decision to make.

The problem (or rather, one of the many problems) is that the former playboy father is a cancer survivor named Rafael, who just so happens to be the person Jane shared her first kiss with.

Rafael (played by Justin Baldoni), is married to the conniving Petra (Yael Grobglas) – the one who was supposed to be inseminated in the first place, and will stop at nothing to get her way.

And that's not all: The biological father is former playboy and cancer survivor Rafael, who gave Jane her first kiss

Meet the villain: Rafael's conniving wife Petra went to get inseminated without telling him

That may seem like a lot of crazy subplots as it is, but the series is no doubt going to drop many more bombshells on its audience – while amusing them along the way.

While full of drama, Jane The Virgin is still very much a comedy, and you can’t help but laugh at the various twists and turns that set up the show to have several problems to solve.

There’s even a hunky soap star named Rogelio (played by Jaime Camil), who turns out to have a bigger part in Jane’s life than merely flashing his pearly whites on TV and giving her unrealistic ideals of romance.

Drama: Jane's life quickly becomes like one of the telenovelas she loves to watch. Gina Rodriguez plays the main character

It’s Rodriguez’s charm that makes Jane so likeable, and the 29-year-old has soap opera roots thanks to a stint in The Bold And The Beautiful.

But the supporting cast still manage to stand out beside her. Other elaborate and entertaining characters are Jane’s youthful mother Xiomara (Andrea Navedo), who had her as a teenager, and her strict grandmother, Alba (Ivonne Coll).

It’s Alba who has drummed it into Jane’s head from a young age that she must save her virginity for marriage. And Jane even has a crumpled flower framed on her wall to remind herself of ‘the ugliness of the deflower’.

When they first find out she is pregnant, the family wonder for a brief moment if it is immaculate conception, but it instead turns out to be the work of the distracted doctor, who coincidentally is also Rafael’s sister.

Jane’s life is very steady until her unexpected pregnancy turns it upside down. In fact, she has it all planned out with a ‘timeline’.

She’s training to become a teacher while supporting herself by working at a Miami hotel, and about to get engaged to handsome detective Michael (Brett Dier), but he may be more scheming than his dreamy appearance and gentleness towards Jane would suggest.

TV'S STRANGEST PLOT LINES

  • In General Hospital, cancer sufferer Emily Quartermaine (played by Natalia Livingston) was cured after she had a dream about kissing someone.
  • Bridget Forrester in The Bold and the Beautiful, played by Jennifer Finnigan, shared an intimate relationship with Ridge (Ronn Moss), despite the fact she believed for years that he was her father and subsequently her brother.
  • One of the UK’s most popular soaps EastEnders saw one character swap the body of her dead infant son with another character’s child back in 2011.
  • And of course, no one can forget the famous – or should that be infamous – episode of Dallas, where it was revealed the entire previous season had been a dream.

It won’t be the first adaptation of a telenovela to make it to primetime TV.

Jane The Virgin will be hoping for the same kind of success as Ugly Betty, which was based on Colombian soap Yo soy Betty, la fea and ran for four seasons.

There’s no doubt plenty more snags will present themselves to Jane as the much talked about series goes on.

And despite being ready to settle down with Michael, there could be some unfinished business between the protagonist and Rafael, who is unhappy in his marriage.

With so much going on in the pilot, we are sure to see the same high-drama continue throughout the first season.
