The bi metal TAG Heuer 1000 used to be easy to find, but not any more. Model reference 980.020N.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the manufacturers stamp on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made 1989.
CONDITION
The TAG Heuer 1000 was above the entry level Formula 1 watches, but lower in specification than the 1500, 2000, 3000, 4000 and 6000 series. So they were never made with automatic movements, or as a chronograph. The bracelets were folded metal not solid, and the glass is glass not sapphire. But they were hugely popular, and still are. The bi metal ones do have a weakness though, and that is that the plating on the bracelets was quite thin and wore quickly. Most watches now will be fitted with a leather strap that replaced the leather strap. However this watch has a new aftermarket bracelet that looks the part, mainly because the original TAG Heuer flip lock clasp has been transferred to the new bracelet (albeit without the divers extension piece). The movement is an ETA quartz, which is working well – once the date did stick, but that was advanced via the quick set function easily. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The plating on the crown and unidirectional turning bezel is good. The bracelet is quite long and has extra links included.
