More than a few times, over the course of many, many re-reads, this book has moved me to tears. I have owned two second edition copies of this book. Absolutely one of the most amazing pieces of modern literature and art I have ever experienced. If Woodroofe had been responsible for only the writing or the art, in collaboration with an artist or author, that would've been something. That this author developed the concept, wrote the story, illustrated his work with some of the most amazingly detailed, breathtaking, fanciful and (at turns) horrifying imagery to ever appear in a modern work, as well as a unique, consistent and decipherable ideographic system of writing, leaves me in utter awe of his talent. The original first editions were also issued with a vinyl pressing of music from the "alien" culture explored in the book, composed and arranged as well by the author. I passed one copy on to my daughter, and the second copy will go to her children when they are old enough. An absolute treasure, and a beautifully rendered cautionary tale of how truly tenuous and beautiful a jewel is our "Second Earth".

Book listed as used soft cover and come in as a new hard cover. The book is just as awesome as it was in 1988 when I first read it. Bought this copy for my son

Great used quality, I've been searching for a reasonably priced copy for awhile

The Album art is better

The Book Designers, Editors should be sent to Guantanamo for a scolding

The Format should have matched the LP 12"x12"

For those who never saw the Album "You have been shortchanged"

Images are clipped, reduced and cropped. The binding hides images

The Printer should also be on the list of convicts - the colors are washed by comparison to the original.

The larger format I suggest would have cost more for the cover and binding but would have used less paper and few pages. The design time would have been less. The Album would have been copied - with the new pages inserted or appended.

The additional material is negligible if viewed apart from the original.

By the way - I did compare the 2 after viewing the book for a week

Patrick Woodroffe is a god. His work has inspired me for decades. LOVE this book. Every page loaded with reference and ideas to borrow for my own art.

This will be the third time I've had to replace this copy. Alas I must be a poor steward! But on to the book. It's a tour-de-force stunning visualization of fantasy art. At some times childish, and as in all things childish, sometimes echoing a wisdom that belies it's innocence. When I recommend this book to others, I ask them if they have experimented with any drugs before. Usually the answer is no, and I am given the immense pleasure of watching their eyes widen with wonder as they turn the pages.

I find it most interesting that my own father gave 2 different responses to the book. One when he was younger and just concerned with making his livelihood(for which I am grateful) was dismissive and curt. The other was after his heart was opened much later (post retirement) where he thoroughly enjoyed it.

A Magical Book, and one worth replacing after a house-fire! HA!

Woodroffe's Second Earth is a very different retelling of Genesis, a poetic story of the rise and fall and rebirth of the human race. The prose has a mystical and philosophical flavor appropriate to the subject, but with poetically beautiful language. Every page has at least one painting, often two or three, and the paintings range from peacefully pretty landscapes thronged with alien animals to Boschian nightmares or war and devastation.

Everything in the book is very beautiful, and everything in the book is very strange. The book has strongly religious overtones but bears no resemblance to any real religion. If that description appeals to you, then the Second Earth is the best rendition of it you're likely to find.

If not, you'll find the book weird, creepy, and maybe offensive, but at least it will still be pretty.

Also, the book is very, very out of print and getting harder and harder to obtain.

This book is truly like no other. It is beautifully artistic, mythical in scope and language, and a pleasure both to read and to look at. It is good both as a coffee table book because of the lavish paintings on every page, and as a regular book to read. Warning to the unprepared: The story is dark, with both graphic murder and nudity in the artwork.

I bought this to supplement my new CD of the Pentateuch ( Greenslade/Woodrofffe)
Sadly when this Greenslade classic was reissued on CD from vinyl, the pictures all got squished down to 10pt text size bookle which also easily falls out of the CD folder. The original 1987 book is now rarer than hens teeth. My second hand copy is still in very good nick ( and not for sale!.) new , original copies will be expensive. You may be lucky to get one that came with the Vinyl record.
The tale of another Earth , another God , another Pentateuch ( very imaginatively written and illustrated by Patrick Woodroffe) is a fascinating Sci Fi story.
