Although Rush has released five live albums in their career, Rush In Rio is certainly the best of the lot. Like their previous live album Different Stages, it's much more representative of their live show than their other live albums because the material spans their entire career rather than a particular point in their career. Also unlike many live albums which sound obviously doctored in the studio, the sound quality is kept pretty raw here and that combined with a wild crowd of 40,000 fans in Rio de Janeiro make this the next best thing to seeing Rush live.

While the production is not so polished, it takes nothing away from the incredible musicianship of the band. Geddy Lee's bass is way up in the mix even if his vocals are sometimes drowned out by the crowd on their most popular tracks. Alex Lifeson's playing remains impressive and is downright volcanic on the newer material from the Vapor Trails album. And Neil Peart is amazing as usual, still the best drummer in rock. The song selection is very well thought out as it balances their most popular tracks with a healthy dose of tracks from their later albums, particularly Roll The Bones and Vapor Trails. The timeless tracks "The Trees", "New World Man", "Limelight", "Free Will", "2112", and "Tom Sawyer" all sound amazing here and are more energetic than their studio versions. "Closer To The Heart", a track which the band rarely perfomed on this tour, also sounds great. The tracks from the synth era, "Distant Early Warning", "Red Sector A", and especially "The Big Money" are much stronger here than the live versions on A Show Of Hands. The band absolutely chugs like a locomotive on the newer tracks "One Little Victory", "Secret Touch", "Earthshine", and "Driven." The lesser known tracks "Between Sun And Moon" and "The Pass" are also a nice surprise. There is also an excellent acoustic version of "Resist" and a fantastic drum solo from Neil Peart, "O Baterista", which pays homage to legendary jazz drummer Buddy Rich at its outro. Other classic tracks here include the epic "Natural Science", the early favorites "By-Tor & The Snow Dog" and "Working Man" and the instrumentals "YYZ" and "La Villa Strangiato" on which the rabid crowd actually sings with note for note! This is a fantastic album that all Rush fans should own.

Rush is ALWAYS great! I would've love to have heard a regular live version of between Sun and Moon, but the board mix will have to do. This is basically the Vapor Trails setlist... I've heard negative comments about the crowd noise being too loud in the mix, however it's kind of cool to hear Rush getting the Beatles treatment... And hearing a South American audience sing an instrumental piece... that was new!

I have been listening to RUSH since 1983, at which time I fell in love with "Exit Stage Left" and the studio album that preceded it, "Moving Pictures". I was in Middle School at the time. Throughout the '80s I collected their first 16 albums. In the '90s I continued to listen to the old stuff but I did not purchase any new albums. This is my first purchase of a RUSH recording since the late '80s and I am delighted. I saw RUSH in 2003 and most recently in 2005 and this triple cd captures their excellence in live performance. These guys, after nearly 30 years (at the time of this recording), are still rocking at the top of their game. And, for those die-hard RUSH fans, there are some great old gems such as "Signus X1", which you will be delighted to hear. This is a great recording of one of the best and most innovative bands of ROCK and I recommend it to RUSH lovers and those just getting to know the band. Even the newer stuff is great to listen to. Rock on RUSH!

Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, Neil Peart--RUSH. Period.

Rush was my first concert. Every time I seem them live, I am blown away by how good they are. Every one of their albums is disappointment, since the magic of Rush live on stage can not be recorded.

I read a review about this album, and how it captured the feel of Rush live. I guess whoever wrote that review has a better stereo than I do. This was another recorded Rush show. It's great because it reminds you of what they can be when you see them live, but it did not capture them live. If you already have several live Rush albums, there is no need to add this one to your collection. It has a lot of great music, but very little of it was actually new to my collection.

Given the difficulties in performing the Brazilian shows, Rush and their crew did a commendable effort as shown on the DVD. Unfortunately, this live CD set isn't up to the standards of Different Stages. In fact, this CD set is more like an official bootleg in terms of overall audio quality. Blame the "primitive recording truck" or the mixing. Even the "bootleg" tracks sound better than most of the set. The band seems to be too far away and you can't hear Geddy's singing, Alex's guitar, or Neil's cymbals clearly or loud enough some of the time. This certainly did no justice to songs like "The Pass" and "Bravado". At times the crowd noise is too much and it drowned out the band (yes, we know it was a fanatical, huge crowd). I think all of Rush's previous live material is better than this CD set. All the World's a Stage and Different Stages Disk 3 may have been recorded on vintage equipment, but at least Rush was loud and clear on these recordings and you felt you were sitting in the first row of the concert. Hopefully, this won't be the last Rush live CD set. I know that Rush wanted to celebrate their return and record one of their largest shows ever and share them with all the fans, but this record should have been mixed better to give that idea justice. Again, great band, great performance, great fans, average recording and/or mixing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buen directo de un supergrupo
Reviewed in Spain on November 3, 2015

5.0 out of 5 stars Triple dose !
