Apparently, even leading men like Gerard Butler aren't immune to the attachments we form with our hair. In a video he posted to Instagram this week, the Geostorm star documents the process of shaving off his beloved beard, and — spoiler alert — he doesn't let it go quietly.

"The shave in action. Consider myself trimmed, finally," he captioned Monday's post. "Here I am, about to — what do you call this? Shave? — shave my beard off after a year of having it on," Butler, 47, says in the video, looking truly pained. "I'm totally depressed. I've also gotta cut my hair, we're gonna shave my beard, to do some additional photography on Hunter Killer." (An upcoming film of his.)

He adds, "I've literally had this since last December. It's been way longer than this, too, and I'm totally depressed." Then, without any further ado, he clicks on the electric razor and starts mowing down his facial hair, letting out shrieks and yells as he goes, as well as a chant of "gone, gone, gone."

Also on Monday, the actor shared three photos on Twitter illustrating the process of cutting off his long hair and beard. In the first, with his unruly hair, a full beard trailing down his neck, and dark aviator shades, he's practically unrecognizable. In the second, he has a slightly trimmed hairdo and beard, and in the third, sans facial hair and sporting a closely cropped 'do, he looks like a completely different person. "One week, three looks. The last of the beardy days," he captioned the post.

While it may seem all hope for Butler is gone, it's important to note the world fell head over heels in love with him when he was sporting only the slightest five o'clock shadow in P.S. I Love You. Chin up, Gerard.
