Supergoop!

Supergoop! Protec(tint) Daily SPF Tint SPF 50

Why It's Worth It: Picking our favorite out of all Supergoop SPFs is a near-impossible tasks, but when it comes to the brand's tinted options, Allure associate beauty editor Annie Blay says the Protec(tint) Daily SPF Tint SPF50 is her go-to for its second-skin look and feel. "The formula is lightweight, the shade match is near perfect, and it did a decent job of covering up my dark spots," she says.

Tester Feedback: Blay gives this formula bonus points for its non-greasy finish. "As an oily skin girly, I didn't even have to set it with powder, but if you like a matte finish you may find this a bit too dewy," she says.

Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, ectoin, zinc oxide | Who It's For: All skin types

Live Tinted

Live Tinted Hueguard Tint Skin Tint SPF 50

Why It's Worth It: Few mineral sunscreens have passed Allure commerce editor Sarah Han's testing process, so the fact that she uses Live Tinted’s Hueguard Tint all the time is a big deal. "I’ve been on a light-coverage base/skin tint kick for quite some time now and Hueguard Tint totally fits the bill — Shade 9 gives me an incredible glow that makes me look so much more alive over Zoom (and IRL, of course) but the formula doesn’t feel greasy or the least bit heavy on my combination skin," she says.

Tester Feedback: Han recommends wetting a beauty sponge to add extra coverage to smaller areas of concern, including your hairline and around your nose.

Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, sea buckthorn oil, Indian gooseberry, zinc oxide | Who It's For: All skin types

Best SPF Serum: Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40

Ilia

Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40

Why It's Worth It: Ilia's Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 gets a lot of love from us for a multitude of reasons. In addition to offering light coverage in 30 actually diverse shades — pretty major for a tinted sunscreen — its nearly weightless serum format makes it truly unique. Although it feels like you're wearing nothing (and looks like you're wearing a perfect complexion), it's actually introducing moisture-boosting, calming ingredients like hyaluronic acid, squalane, and niacinamide into the skin, topped off with mineral sun filters.

Tester Feedback: Allure senior news editor Nicola Dall’Asen says her hands "automatically gravitate" to this tinted serum "when I can't be bothered to do skin care or makeup (aka very frequently)." "Putting the word 'serum' in the name wasn't a lie; this stuff oozes, goozes, and slathers just like a thick, somewhat oily serum — and that's exactly what lends itself as a seconds-long, rub-in application and instantly hydrating effect," she says.

Key Ingredients: Zinc oxide, squalane, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid | Who It's For: Normal and dry skin types

Frequently Asked Questions

How to find the best tinted sunscreen shade for my skin tone

As much as we love these glow-inducing formulas, the biggest caveat when it comes to tinted sunscreens is the lack of inclusive colors currently available, with most being optimal for light-to-medium skin tones. That said, there are several brands that are getting it right and checking all the boxes in terms of protection, skin-perfecting, and shade range, so we're really hoping others do the smart thing and follow suit soon. To find the best tinted sunscreens across all shade ranges, our diverse team of editors put the most popular formulas currently on the market to the test, and the above ranked high on our list of go-tos.

Like shades, tinted sunscreens also come in several different formulas (liquid, cream, powder) and finishes (dewy, matte, satin), and feature sheer-, medium-, and full-coverage formulas to choose from. So whether you're looking for a fabulous all-in-one product to knock out a few products in your skincare routine, or just want to double up on your SPF, tinted sunscreens are the answer.

You should also know that there are options in SPF 15 (which is below the American Academy of Dermatology's broad-spectrum SPF rating recommendation) up to broad-spectrum SPF 50, plus they come in mineral, chemical, and hybrid formulas to test. Speaking of the former, mineral-based formulas are more likely to create a white cast, especially on those with darker skin tones, says New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Michele Green, MD. "[Mineral sunscreens] typically contain ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium oxide which create a white cast on the skin," she says. Dr. Green adds that the white cast is an indication that the sunscreen is working and is creating a physical barrier on your skin, albeit a very unflattering one. That's where tinted SPF formulas come in. They provide all the broad-spectrum protection you need to protect against UV rays without a white, ashy finish.

How to apply tinted sunscreen

Like any sunscreen you wear, we recommend applying AAD's recommended amount of one ounce on your entire body—remember, every inch of your skin is susceptible to the damaging effects of UV rays. With that being said, we assume you'll apply your tinted sunscreen only to your face (but they can be used anywhere!), so if that's the case, New York-based board-certified dermatologist Carmen Castilla, MD, previously told Allure to follow the "two-finger method." Simply dispense sunscreen along the length of your pointer and middle fingers, and this amount is derm-approved to ensure your face and neck have a proper layer of UV protection. "There really is no harm in applying extra sunscreen, so if you are unsure that you are adequately protected, just apply some more," she said.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing every product that’s included in the review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best tinted sunscreens, we considered each product’s performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors — along with special consideration from dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors — in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon — is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the “best” for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We’re proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.
