Important Skills and Knowledge

The followings are the skills and knowledge indicated by newly-hired engineers as important for job performance in A&D organizations.

 

Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Knowledge: technical knowledge required to design, manufacture, sustain and/or test mechanical systems or sub-components of such systems, with emphasis on mechanical systems required for the development of aircrafts and spacecrafts.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Knowledge: engineering knowledge that newcomers had to learn concerned with the discipline of electrical and computer engineering.

Business/Industrial Operations Knowledge: knowledge concerning the inner workings of a business or an industry, with a focus on practices and procedures which sustain the operation of the business.

Organization/Workgroup Specific Knowledge: knowledge about the inner workings of the particular organization or workgroup the newcomer worked for, including employee benefits, travel information and other relevant organizational workflows.

Software Using Skills: technical skills involve the ability to use software to achieve a desired goal.

Data Engineering/Analysis Skills: technical skills typically related to being a “data scientist” or required to with with data.

Test Procedures: technical skills involve the learning to effectively perform standardized test procedures on aerospace systems or components of aerospace systems effectively.

Interpersonal Communication skills: professional skills equip one to carry out effective verbal communication with other people in a professional context.

Professional Writing Skills: professional skills associated with writing professional documents such as technical reports, agreement letters, and contract documents.

Managerial Skills: professional skills involve the ability to manage and administer work at a personal level or a project/group level.
