Active infection and morphometric study of Trypanosoma evansi among horses in Peninsula Malaysia2013 •
Apart from occasional reports of clinical disease affecting horses, there is no information about Trypanosoma evansi in horses in Peninsula Malaysia. Thus, a cross-sectional study was conducted in eight states in Peninsula Malaysia to determine the active presence of T. evansi in horses. A total of 527 blood samples were obtained and examined by haematocrit centrifugation technique (HCT), Giemsa-stained thin blood smear (GSS), morphometric measurements, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloning of PCR products. The results showed an overall parasitological prevalence of 0.57% (3/527, CI: 1.6-0.19%) with both HCT and GSS. Morphometric study revealed the mean total length of the trypanosomes including the free flagellum was 27.94 ± 2.63 μm. PCR successfully amplified a trypanosome specific 257 bp in 1.14% of samples (6/527, CI: 2.4-0.52%) and was confirmed by nucleotide sequences. The mean packed cell volume (PCV) for the positive cases detected by HCT was lower (23% ± 7.00) compare...

Evaluation and correlation of oxidative stress and haemato-biochemical observations in horses with natural patent and latent trypanosomosis in Punjab state of India2018 •
The haemato-biochemical indices and oxidative stress markers in horses naturally infected with Trypanosoma evansi were evaluated by analyzing the level of these parameters between T. evansi infected (microscopically positive patent group and PCR positive latent group) and infection free horses. To compare the hemato-biochemical indices and oxidative stress indicators, horses were divided into three categories based on diagnostic test employed and positive results obtained. These included Romanowsky stained slide positive group (Group I; n = 6), PCR positive group (group II; n = 28) and negative control group (group III, n = 30), revealing parasitologically positive patent, molecular positive latent and disease free status of horses. A significant reductions in total erythrocytes count (TEC, P = 0.01), haemoglobin (Hb, P = 0.01) and packed cell volume (PCV, P = 0.04) was noticed both in group I and group II while significant neutrophilia and lymphocytopenia was observed in group I wh...

Decolonising Teacher Education Curriculum in South African Higher Education2021 •
Calls for the decolonisation of higher education in South Africa gained prominence after the #Rhodesmustfall, #Feesmustfall and series of 2015-2016 students’ protests in South African higher institutions. Visible in the demands of the students during these protests was the need for the decolonisation of higher education curriculum to ensure reflection of diverse realities in South Africa. This led to various conferences in different parts of the Republic. However, while some scholars are clamouring for the need for decolonisation, others consider the desire for decoloniality and glocalization. Thus, the subject of decolonisation remains a debate in South African society. Meanwhile, decolonisation is still very much crucial. Seemingly, in the words of Steve Biko, decolonization should begin from the mind. Hence, this discursive study explores how pre-service teachers’ minds can be decolonised for realities in transforming South African higher education. The study adopts Critical Race...

The etiological role of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) in invasive cervical cancer has been demonstrated by epidemiological and molecular studies. In HPV-associated cervical carcinomas, the expression/ function of p16 is impaired by the action of viral E6 and E7 oncoproteins. In order to evaluate the potential of p16INK4a and E4 HPV16 mRNA as clinical markers for progression and development of cervical malignant lesions we analyzed cervical specimens from patients with different cytology (collected in liquid cytology medium from 89 women, (22-72 years old) which were used to isolate genomic DNA (High Pure PCR Template, Roche Diagnostics) and RNA (RNAeasy kitQiagen). E4 HPV16 mRNA gene expression was performed using E4 HPV16 PCR and the results obtained were confirmed by Southern Blot Hybridization. We evaluated p16INK4a expression using TaqMan Real Time PCR (Applied Biosystems). The molecular detection of HPV DNA and E4 HPV16 expression were corroborated with p16INK4a expressi...
