In a series of recent writings we have sought to re-open a debate over the economics of socialism. We have argued that the collapse of the Soviet system does not necessitate the conclusion that all forms of socialist economy are doomed to inefficiency. Updating and extending a line of reasoning found in Lange (1967) and Johansen (1977), 1 we have claimed that modern information technology permits the construction of a form of planned economy that is both equitable and efficient.
Markets (In Search of Media)
The Ghosts of Hayek in Orthodox Microeconomics: Markets as Information Processors2019 •
In media studies, there is recurrent fascination with how communication , especially when couched in terms of "information," tends to influence many spheres of social life and intellectual endeavor. Some of the key figures in that discipline have been especially attentive to the implications for politics of the modern advent of the "information economy." Nevertheless, we think that there has been little impetus among media scholars to explore how other disciplines , and in this case orthodox economics, have been providing competing accounts of the nature and importance of information over the same rough time frame. Furthermore, we think they might be surprised to learn that Friedrich Hayek and the neoliberals have been important in framing inquiry into the information economy for the larger culture for a couple of generations. This essay is a preliminary report on what would happen to intellectual history if media studies took the early development of the "economics of information" into account.

To" close" the intellectual system of a significant thinker, the most effective argumentative strategy is to find an internal contradiction in that system. Eugen Böhm-Bawerk's classic Karl Marx and the Close of His System [1896] did just that, by demonstrating the internal contradictions with Marx's value and distribution theory. Elias Khalil [2002] attempts to follow a similar argumentative strategy against FA Hayek.

FA Hayek's significant intellectual contribution to a number of scholarly disciplines was grounded in his critique of socialist economics. This article sets out how Hayek's critique of classical and market socialism led to the development of his wide-ranging research programme in the social sciences and shows that the implications of this research programme remain crucial to academic research and public policy in the twenty-first century.
Yochai Benkler has been called “the leading intellectual of the information age.” His recent work, The Wealth of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets and Freedom, is, I believe, one of the most important attempts to vindicate a liberal egalitarian perspective in recent decades. Unlike most other advocates of this position, however, Benkler does not remain on the level of the abstract philosophical ideas. In Marxian terminology, he presents what is in effect a historical materialist account of the dialectical interactions of the forces of production and production relations in the contemporary era. Benkler himself does not refer to “socialism” once in his work. Nevertheless, his account implicitly calls into question every element of the familiar picture of socialism sketched above. A critical analysis of The Wealth of Networks therefore provides an exceptional opportunity to consider what, if anything, the socialist project might mean in the present moment of world history. (From Does Socialism Have a Future?, edited by Richard Schmitt, Lexington Books, 2012 (155-84).)
Hayek's classical liberal critics maintain that his argument in his last published work, The Fatal Conceit, allows for only a very small role for the critical scrutiny of tradition and little prospect for the ability to use reason to overcome the growing problems of our age. Much of this interpretation stems from Hayek's argument that socialism has a Cartesian element, one which misunderstands the role of Reason in directing social institutions; in its place Hayek emphasizes the fundamental importance of tradition. Casting Hayek as a conservative, his critics fail to understand that he views tradition as essentially a discovery procedure which, as the hermeneutics of Gadamer also maintains, cannot be questioned all at once, but only immanently.
