The National Education Policy (NEP) was implemented to create wonders and reforms for the standard Indian Education System. One such wonder is restructuring Indian Universities' Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) programs. The NEP 2020 aims to transform the nation and make India a Vishva Guru (global knowledge superpower) by encouraging the growth of a student's academic, artistic, social, physical, emotional, ethical, and moral facets in an organized framework.
Under the reformed policy, the UG and PG programs have been restructured to include a flexible, interdisciplinary curriculum. There is now more focus on vocational, research-based, and skill-based education. Besides this, there is an emphasis on experiential learning, where students will learn by actively participating.
The previous UG/PG education update was made in 2005 by the then Government of India. The policy was based on the "Common Minimum Programme," which focused on conducting a Common Entrance Test entirely in India for admission to technical or professional courses.
Before the NEP 2020, there were 3 years of bachelor's degree courses in India, and the PG program was for two years.
The PG courses were research-oriented and focused on a particular specialization. The students were required to complete a thesis at the end of the course program, which serves as a standard of their understanding of the subject.
However, the research infrastructure in most universities was insufficient, leading to a decline in the quality of research work. It drastically hindered the students' ability to explore and push the boundaries of their research.
The NEP 2020 proposes a significant change in the UG/PG structure. The UG program will last four years, and the PG program will be for either 1-year master's course or two years, depending on the approach. The new structure aims to provide students with a more holistic and multidisciplinary education that will prepare them with the skills needed to excel in the modern world.
This reformation aims to transform single-stream institutions into sizable multidisciplinary universities with Higher Education Information Systems (HEIs) and strengthen the institutional framework required for multidisciplinary research and education.
Students can enroll in their desired courses for 1, 2, 3, or 4 years bachelor's degree course level. They can work towards finishing their desired courses in a year, earning a certification over time, a diploma for finishing any course that takes two years, and then degree programs that take three or four years. It will also assist students in selecting the best course based on their abilities.

The NEP content development for the PG program will witness significant changes as per the reformed policy. The one-year PG program will be research-based to provide students with advanced knowledge in their field of study. On the other hand, the two-year PG program will be a more specialized program that will provide students with research training and practical experience in their chosen field.
The NEP 2020 aims to nearly double the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education to 50% by 2035 from the current GER of 26.3%. (Reference: PIB Gov) It also makes provisions for giving more freedom to academic institutions that provide top-notch higher education.
For instance, it proposes that the government incentivize private companies that fund research activities or support establishing new higher education institutions. It may create more opportunities for universities, businesses, and researchers to collaborate, stimulating innovation and progress.
