Perhaps the most provocative of punctuation marks, ! has long elicited the love and hate of writers: F. Scott Fitzgerald said exclamation marks are like laughing at your own joke; Terry Pratchett had a character say that multiple !!! are a 'sure sign of a diseased mind'. More recently, Donald Trump has become the doyenne of !, enlisting it as a tool in his divisive demagoguery.  

Can the exclamation mark be rescued from its much-maligned place at the bottom of the punctuation hierarchy?
