Money in Organization

Giving someone moneyThis homeless shelter, being a non-profit, gets its money through government and private grants. The shelter must write grants for specific things that the shelter wants funding for, and from this, the shelter is either awarded or denied the grant. If the shelter is awarded the grant, it must show some sort of proof that the money from the grant went to the specific thing it was requested for, such as case management, shelter programs, or housing for example. All the money that the shelter receives goes to the services. The shelter simply does not get enough money to be able to raise employee’s pay. If they were to use some of the money from their services and shift it into increasing the pay, the would not have enough money to run all the programs that they have set up. This particular shelter has been on a pay-freeze for the past three years, meaning, that they do not give out raises and the end of the year. Even if they were to have a “good” year, they cannot increase their employees’ pay because they don’t have enough money to do so. In order to help their employees out, the shelter can offer the employees higher positions, with more responsibilities and work, in turn for increased payment. However, the employees must literally earn every bit of extra money earned, since the shelter has so little to spend.
