TropicZone Performance Box
Turtle Diets

Proper Feeding Practices & Suggestions

TropicZone Performance Box Turtle Diets are specifically designed with a smaller than normal pellet size for Box turtles, terrestrial turtles, and semi aquatic turtle species that feed predominantly out of the water. The smaller pellet size allows for easier consumption on dry land or wet/damp environments. With all terrestrial turtles it is always important to have adequate amounts of water available to drink. For proper feeding, simply place a low dish in the enclosure and offer TropicZone Performance Box Turtle Diets on a continual basis so that the turtles may forage throughout the day. Some keepers have found it beneficial to moisten the food slightly when being fed. Be sure to remove and discard any food that becomes soiled by the turtles. TropicZone always encourages the keeper to supplement the turtle’s diet with up to 20% fresh leafy plant materials, live insects, or …

A Special note on feeding TropicZone Performance Box Turtle Diets

Here is a question we receive from many Box Turtle keepers new to the TropicZone Box Turtle Diets: “We have started feeding the new TropicZone food and the turtles really love it! But it appears that they may not be eating enough, is this normal?

The answer is YES!

Many Box turtles (and other omnivorous turtles) are often mistakenly fed a diet based primarily on fresh vegetables and fruits, sometimes only augmented with small amounts of essential animal/insect proteins. Most fresh fruits and vegetables contain upwards of 80-90% water. WATER! In most cases, only 6-8% of this “fresh” food source actually contains any nutrient content whatsoever. Most of it, unfortunately, is just plain water and a great deal of non-digestible plant fiber (cellulose) with little or no nutrient content. It is because of this that turtles being fed on this type of diet must consume huge amounts of fresh grocery store produce to satisfy their nutrient needs once the excessive volume of water has been expelled. This is why Box turtles eat so much “fresh” food.  In contrast to this, when box turtles (like any turtle) are fed a diet with a much more concentrated nutrient content, like TropicZone Performance Box Turtle Diets, it needs to consume far less quantity to satisfy its nutrient requirements and calorie intake. This is why it may “appear” that the turtles are not eating “enough” of the TropicZone Performance Box Turtle Diet (compared to fresh foods filled with water), when in fact, they are consuming all they need to stay healthy and well nourished!
