Top 10 upcoming expressways in India: How they're different from a regular highway

India is expected to add 1.8 lakh kilometres of national highways by 2025, intended to bolster the country’s journey towards becoming a 5 trillion dollar economy.

These expressways are intended to improve trade connectivity, bolster the economy and have a positive impact on adjoining regions.

1. Delhi-Mumbai Expressway:

Work is underway on the 1,386 km Delhi-Mumbai Expressway which will cut down travel time from 24 hours to just 12 hours. It is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 98,000 crores and will be the longest expressway once complete.

2. Dwarka Expressway:

This will be India’s first urban expressway. The 29 km expressway is being built to reduce travelling time between Delhi, Gurugram and other regions in Haryana. It is being built at a cost of Rs 9,000 crore.

3. Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway:

This is the 2nd expressway of Maharashtra, after the Mumbai-Pune expressway. Once complete, it will stretch 701 km and is being built for an estimated Rs 55,000 crore.

4. Ganga Expressway:

The six-lane Ganga expressway will connect Meerut with Varanasi, spanning 594 km. The final phase is expected to be completed in April 2024. The estimated cost of this project is Rs 40,000 crore.

5. Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway:

Currently, in Phase 1, the DAK expressway will be a 4-lane project that will cover 650 km in its final stage. NHAI is currently facing land acquisition problems with farmers, the estimated cost of Phase 1 is Rs 25,000 crore.

6. Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway:

This 4-lane expressway starts from southwest Ahmedabad and goes 110 km south, connecting Dholera. The estimated cost is Rs 3.500 crore and it features eight major interchanges. It is expected to be completed by December 2024.

7. Bangalore-Chennai Expressway:

This is another major project which will span 260 km and connect Bengaluru with Chennai. Conceptualised to have 8 lanes, it was downgraded to a four-lane expressway and is being built at a cost of Rs 17,000 crore.

8. Raipur-Visakhapatnam Expressway

This six-lane expressway will start in Raipur and connect with Visakhapatnam, 464 km away. The estimated cost is Rs 20,000 crore and the deadline for completion is sometime in 2025.

9. Bundelkhand Expressway:

This four-lane expressway will connect the Etawah district with the Chitrakoot district. It will span 296 km and has an estimated cost of Rs 14,716 km. It is currently operational and has been developed by UPEIDA.

10. Purvanchal Expressway:

Another UPEIDA project, the Purvanchal expressway was completed in November 2021, it connects Lucknow with Ghazipur. The expressway length is 340 km long and it cost Rs 22,494 km to build.

Difference between an expressway and a highway?

An expressway is bigger with 6 to 12 lanes, it is designed for high-speed travel. Traffic is controlled by ramps for entry and exit and no other route crosses it, making it safer.

Longest operational expressway:

Currently, the Agra-Lucknow Expressway is the longest operating route spanning 302 km. That will change once the Delhi-Mumbai expressway is completed.
