BASF is a European multinational chemical company and the largest chemical producer in the world.

White was the most popular global color in 2022 for light passenger vehicles, with about 39% all cars sold around the world finished in white.

With an 18% market share in 2022, black continues to be in high demand for car buyers. In India, a range of manufacturers have introduced special edition versions of their cars with a completely blacked out exterior shade, most notably Tata Motors with the Harrier, Safari, Nexon.

Gray followed just behind Black as the third most popular car colour in the world in 2022, with a market share of 16%. In the Asia Pacific region, Gray displayed "great depth and breadth of shades and effects", as per the study. This Kia Seltos X Line, finished in Matte Graphite is a great example.

Silver was the least favourite achromatic car colour last year, being the choice of 8% car buyers - which is still a decent number.

Chromatic colors like orange, yellow, violet,and green gained market share in 2022, however, were still behind achromatic colours overall.

Blue was the top-selling achromatic car colour last year, being the preferred choice of 8% buyers, 1% less than what it was in 2021.

Similar to Blue, the sale of Red coloured cars was down 1% in 2022 as compared to the preceding year. With a 5% market share, Red was the sixth most popular car colour shade last year.

Green comes next with a market penetration of just 1% in the year 2022.

Brown takes the 8th spot as per the study by BASF, having a market share of 1%. A very limited number of cars in India are offered with a brown colour option in 2023, including the Mahindra Thar shown here.

Orange is one of the few chromatic colours that gained market share in 2022 over the previous year. However, it came 9th on the list, being a choice of just 1% car buyers.

Yellow comes next, again, with a market share of 1%. As of now, no carmaker offers a yellow colour option on any mass-market car in India, but here's the yellow 2010 Chevrolet Camaro from the movie 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen', popularly known as the character 'Bumblebee'.

Beige took the 11th position as far as car colour preference of buyers in 2022 went, with only 1% of all buyers purchasing their car in this colour.

Despite being on last in the list, violet overall did gain market share in 2022. The extremely rare shade ended the year with a market share of 1%. In North America shades like greenand violet took the share from red last year.
