Zombie Panic! Source Manual
By Orphanage and 4 collaborators
A huge manual created mostly for newcomers in need of help in explaining how the game works. This is also for old players who decided to come back to play the game again, but simply forgot how to play and are not aware of the changes.

Introduction

Zombie Panic! Source (ZPS) is a PvP, first-person shooter with survival horror elements. It takes place in an assortment of different locations surrounding Boulder City, where the zombie outbreak first appeared.

Players start as a small group of survivors just trying to stay alive. Choosing between two teams, you will have to work together if you wish to survive or escape from certain death. If you prefer more challenging and stealth-oriented gameplay, you can choose to play on the side of the undead. You'll need to do your best to hunt down the survivors and feast upon their juicy brains!

Note for Windows XP users: Windows XP is no longer supported because some third-party libraries used by Zombie Panic! Source are not compatible with Windows XP binaries.
Windows 10 S will not be supported either.

Check our official F.A.Q for further information.

It's not really necessary, but some settings can be useful to smooth out the gameplay and improve performance, especially if you have a weak computer or playing on a laptop.

Basic Game Rules and Tips
There are a couple of things you should know before joining a server. Here are some rules and tips you should learn in order to survive and thrive playing Zombie Panic! Source.

Finding a game
You're free to select any server you wish to play on; however, if you want to experience "the real deal" and pure gameplay, connect to official servers or any vanilla server. If your ping is too high to play on those servers, you can sort servers by their latency in the server list.

The Teams

Playing as a Survivor
  • You will have to search for items, weapons, ammo, barricades, armor or health on the maps. Do not expect to find items laying right in front of you; search for them anywhere you can - even together with your group of survivors. You never know if you will find that box of 9mm (pistol) bullets in that corner, so keep an eye out! It will depend on the map you're playing on and the player count because of our randomized spawn system.

  • Fighting against zombies is not so simple. They won't die with just one shot in the head (unless you use a powerful weapon, such as the Revolver, Sledgehammer or a Chair). Be sure to line up your shots and shoot them until they drop!

  • Headshots do more damage than bodyshots. Sometimes you will find yourself in a situation where you might need to slow down a zombie that is chasing you, but you are in a wide open area with no obstacles. This is when you want to shoot that zombie in the legs. Shooting them in the legs will slow them down for a few seconds. If you're working together with another survivor, you can take down that walking corpse quite easily (Example: One player will shoot the legs, other player will take care of the headshots).

  • You will be encouraged to work together with the rest of your teammates if you wish to survive or complete the objective of the map. Watch each other's back and communicate with your group.

  • Be sure to share your supplies with your fellow survivors - you can only use one gun at a time, and a strong teammate is one less zombie you have to fend off later. Weapons, ammo or even armor: share it. Every single item (except armor) will slow you down slightly. The more you carry, the slower you become - and slow humans are an easy target for zombies. Of course, it's understandable that you'll need firepower, but if you let zombies get too close to you then you won't be much of a challenge. Giving items to fellow survivors will ensure you're nimble and perhaps also give you additional cover.

"Give a little, get a lot".

Playing as a Zombie
  • You'll die as a Zombie in any fight - a lot. Dying as a zombie is totally fine, but keep in mind there are exceptions! Depending on the gamemode, zombies may have unlimited lives (zpo_ only) or have a finite number of lives shared between the whole zombie team (zps_ and zph_ only). Each time you or one of your zombie brethren dies, one zombie life is wasted. You can earn it back by killing a survivor. If you're careless, unaware of your surroundings, and unwilling to work together with other zombies in hordes, you will end up as a ghost with 0 zombie lives.

  • Teamwork is important not only for survivors, but for zombies as well. Create ambushes to kill survivors with their guard down. Never fight alone against a group of survivors who are armed-to-the-teeth. Group up and charge together.

  • Be sure to stay dark and low, wait for the right moment, form a horde and draw individual humans away to kill one by one - and if you can't kill them, waste their bullets and leave them too hurt to win the next time you attack.

  • You have the power to regenerate your health moderately when not taking any damage. Hold up in a corner to restore your health - fully or not - and go back getting that fresh meat.

Items and Randomized Spawn System

Every item (even objective items) uses a randomized spawn system. For example, you found a box of pistol rounds in a furniture room on the first round, but on the second round, you might end up finding shotgun shells in the same place instead. Another example would be finding keys in a very dark room on the first round, but on the second round you might end up with nothing in the same dark room. Therefore you'd have to search other rooms to find the same keys.
Some maps, however, have static spawns and you will always find that certain item in the same place over and over again (a medkit for example).

Item spawns (with the exception for objective items) also depend on how many players are connected to the server. For instance, if 13 players connect to the server, the amount of items spawning in would be normal; however, when there is only 3-4 players, you will mostly end up finding pistol ammo and barely any other guns (even pistols), especially on the Survival gamemode.
Joining the game
As mentioned above, it is recommended to play on official or vanilla-only servers to experience the main core gameplay - especially if is your first time playing. Of course, you are free to connect to whichever server!

Connecting to the server

In the main menu, click on "Find Server" and then select the server you wish to join. You can also connect to the server manually by opening "developer console" (TILDE or ~ by default on QWERTY keyboards, SQUARE by default on AZERTY keyboards) and typing "connect <SERVER IP>" and then pressing ENTER button.

Once you finish connecting to the server, the first thing that will show up is the server's MOTD (Message Of The Day), map name, gamemode summary, map information (If this map is official, modified or made by the community) and the "Join Game" button below. Once you finish checking out stuff, you can press 'Join' button to hop into the Lobby.

The Lobby

The lobby usually has three open zones marked with the team signs, allowing you to select the team you wish to volunteer to play: Survivor, Zombie and Spectator "doorways". Additionally, they are assigned to the F1, F2 and F3 key buttons, so you can select the team faster when joining in a new round.

Biotec's Lobby Room.

Getting in either of these rooms or using the designated buttons will assign you to a team; however, there are a few things you need to remember:
  • If the round is already in progress, you will be automatically assigned to the Zombie Team, even if you tried to join the Survivor Team. There is a little exception to this rule mentioned below:

  • If the round is already in progress and it has been less than one minute since the round's start, you will be able to get into Survivor Team as a late joining survivor. You'll be penalized as a late joiner by having only one of the weakest melee weapons and a loaded PPK but with no ammo for reloading. Some achievements won't be able to be earned as well.

  • Latejoining can be used only once per map, which means that you cannot latejoin more than one time on the currently played map in order to play as a survivor. Make sure to join before the round begins if you want to play on Survivor Team.
Attempting to abuse the latejoin feature in order to constantly play as a survivor will result in you being automatically assigned to Zombie Team despite walking into "Human Team" trigger at the lobby room or tapping F1 if round is already in progress. Be advised.
Survivor Team
Here is some useful information you should know while playing as a Survivor.

Survivor's Heads up Display
1 - Your inventory.
2 - Your stamina bar.
3 - Current map's objective (Objective gamemode only)
4 - Your flashlight and how much battery charge is left (on Hardcore, the battery charge is hidden).
5 - Your health (if you have armor, it will appear here also).
6 - Objective beacon indicating where to go (Objective gamemode only)
7 - Ammo inventory. Shows all your ammo stored in inventory, highlights which ammo your current weapon uses (can be disabled), and your weight.
8 - Ammo loaded in magazine.

Survivors Abilities

Speed and Panic
Survivors can be slowed down if they carry too many weapons or ammo. Don't pick everything up or if you have it already, you can drop these items by using specific keys which were described above.

Running for too long will decrease your stamina bar slightly. Survivors can restore it by standing still for few seconds or walking (Holding shift button + forward key). Standing still will restore stamina quicker than walking, and crouching while standing still or walking amplifies this.

Survivors can Panic! whenever they're in danger, allowing them to get out of most situations quickly. To panic, you need to press P button.

When you panicking, you'll drop all of your weapons and ammo, except the currently equipped weapon (this can be changed so your melee will be drawn out whenever panicking), and gain a full stamina bar for 5 seconds. This can be useful to run away when you bumped into carrier's face and\or other kinds of situations when shooting with guns simply might not work.

This is how it looks like on the GIF below:

Panicking right after being attacked by the Carrier, survivor starts running and drops everything except his melee weapon.

Barricading
Survivors can barricade with certain objects both on Survival and Objective maps in order to hold out, slow zombies down, or block areas off. (Note that not all objects are movable, some of them may appear to be static).

To start barricading using physics objects, you need to holster your weapon by pressing 'H' key. Then come to an object and push it by pressing Mouse2 button. The angle of your camera when pushing will affect how far and high the object will be pushed. It's best to look above the object when pushing.

Survivors can also use barricade hammers to place a wooden plank in order to prevent zombies coming through doors or paths. Grab a hammer and some planks, toggle "barricade mode" with [Mouse 2], and move close to the wall - you will notice a preview of your wooden plank - and then press Mouse1 to barricade!

If you see a red plank preview, this means you can't place that plank due to a few reasons:
  • Something is blocking the way.
  • You're too far away from the wall.
  • You're trying to place a plank on a glass or similar breakable objects. You can only place planks on solid walls.
  • A level designer prohibited planks from being put here to prevent glitches or issues happening.

If you see a yellow one, this means you can place it. Press Mouse 1 to fully place a plank on selected position. You can rotate planks by pressing R key. Also, you can change the size (long\small) by holding the R key.

Example when attempting to barricade a window.

Careful: zombies can break a wooden plank very easily either by beating it or stepping on them. There will be moments where you accidentally block a survivor out with your plank or you need to readjust placement. You can remove your barricade by pressing E key and get the plank back in your inventory (provided you have space available. If you don't, the plank will fall to the ground).

Using voice commands
By pressing and holding either X or C buttons, survivors can communicate with other survivors through Voice Commands. You can also chat with players by pressing the following keys:

Y - Opens chat box and ability to send messages. This will send a message to EVERYONE on the server.
U - Opens chat box and ability to send messages but only to your team.
Mouse wheel button(a.k.a. Mouse3) - Activates voice chat. Remember that zombies can hear your voice when you are playing as a survivor, but not the other way around unless alltalk is enabled.

Remember that you can't communicate with the rest of the players if you are a spectator and the server doesn't allow it. While spectating, you can only communicate with your fellow spectators.
Survivor's Inventory and Items (Part 1)
Each survivor has only 5 slots in their inventory. You can fill your inventory by picking up weapons and objective items. Obviously, you can also free some inventory slots by dropping items you don't need.

The Items
Lots of items can be used by survivors mostly for defending themselves. These items are described in the list below:

Firearms
Pistols
PPK

A little pistol that you always spawn with if you late join a round that is already in progress or playing in Hardcore. Holds 7 bullets in one magazine. Takes one inventory slot. Reloads faster compared to the rest of the 9mm pistols.

Uses:(Pistol rounds)

USP

A simple pistol you can spawn with when the new round starts. Holds 15 bullets in one magazine, takes one inventory slot. Has a medium reloading speed.

Uses:(Pistol rounds)

Glock17 and Glock18c

Very common pistols you can spawn with when the new round starts. Holds 17 bullets in one magazine. Takes one inventory slot.

Uses:(Pistol rounds)

Revolver

A very powerful weapon if it's in the right hands. Allows you to kill pretty much any regular zombie with just one shot, assuming you hit them in head though (Carrier has higher health and takes 2 shots in the head). This revolver can have only 6 bullets loaded. This pistol takes 2 inventory slots instead of just one due to balance reasons.

The only weapon that uses (Magnum rounds).

Shotguns

All shotguns in this game use default (Shotgun rounds) as ammuntion.

Winchester

People sometimes call this weapon a "Double-Barreled shotgun", which is somewhat true.
The damage of this weapon is quite devastating. Holds only 2 shells, meaning you have to land your shots very carefully. Takes 2 inventory slots.

Super Shorty

Lots of people dislike this weapon and usually pick it up only to take out extra shells from it. But it's better than nothing. The damage is not as good as Winchester (meaning that you better not try using it to take down zombies from a distance), but this shotgun still can prove to be useful in engaging with zombies. Holds 3 shotgun shells. Takes only one inventory slot.

Remington 870

A heavy and quick pump action shotgun. A classic weapon in this category. Has a decent damage at point blank range and a very big spread at distance. Can have up to 6 shells be loaded in it. Takes 2 inventory slots.

Automatic rifles
All automatic rifles take 2 inventory slots.
AK-47

A classic Russian assault rifle that has quite a noticable kick and recoil, but deals more damage than other automatic weapons in this game. Holds 30 rounds in one magazine.

Uses: (Rifle ammo).

M4

This assault rifle is more accurate compared to other rifles in this game, but deals less damage than AK-47. Holds 30 rounds in one magazine.

Uses: (rifle ammo).

MP5

While being on "Rifles" category here, it's technically an "SMG", basically a "fully automatic pistol", which means that it has the same damage as the 9mm pistols. Has a noticable recoil, but can be useful for taking down zombies one by one, especially when you dont have much time to reload and want to deal with zombies fast. Holds 30 bullets in one magazine.

Unlike other rifles this one uses:(Pistol rounds)

Explosives
These items take only one inventory slot.
Fragmentation Grenade

A simple generic grenade, which you can either throw on a medium and long distances or toss on a short distance. Has not a big blast radius, can be "cooked" - 6 seconds timer.
You can stack up to 3 grenades in one inventory slot before taking another inventory slot. You can have up to 15 grenades total in your inventory, in case if your inventory is empty.

Left Mouse Button will make you throw a grenade, while pressing the Right Mouse Button will make you toss a grenade.

REMEMBER: Once you start throwing or tossing a grenade, you will be unable to use any other items or interact with anything until you throw or toss that grenade away.

Improvised Explosive Device (I.E.D.)

An explosive which can be either dropped on a ground or planted to the wall. Planting on wall is a better option because zombies can sometimes push your I.E.D. away, making your explosive useless or using it aganist you if you're not careful enough. I.E.D has a large blast radius. Once you throw or plant I.E.D. your character will automatically switch to the Phone and thrown/planted I.E.D will start blinking with red light and periodically ping with a beeping noise.

You can switch to other weapons anytime after you throw/plant your I.E.D. Switch to your Phone manually whenever you need to trigger your I.E.D. Press J button to switch to your Phone and then press MOUSE2 (or Right Mouse Button).
To plant I.E.D., simply stand close to the wall (or any other solid surface) and hold MOUSE2 (or Right Mouse Button) button. Below you can see a preview:

I.E.D planting process

Medical Items and Kevlar Vest.

Bottle of Pills

Restores 20 HP. Can be used to cure infection on Hardcore gamemode only.

First Aid Kit

Restores 45 HP.

First Aid Kits and Pills can be only used when your health is below 100. You cant take these items with you.

Kevlar Vest

People usually call it simple "Armor". This item provides additional protection whenever you're getting attacked by zombies or when you accidentely set yourself on fire or else...
Unlike any other items in this category, you can share your armor with other survivors by using ammunition HUD (You can drop only the following amounts: 100 AP, 50 AP and 25 AP).

Note: If you have used, for example, pills when your health was 85, only 15 HP will be consumed from that pill bottle and it will have only 5 hp remaining to consume. Same rule applies to Kevlar Vest and First Aid Kit.

Barricade Hammers

You can use this item as a melee weapon, but its primary use is for defensive purposes. More information on how to use this hammer is written in Survivor's abilities category.
Survivor's inventory and items (Part 2)
Currently, there are 18 melee weapons available for use. After the 3.0 update, various melee weapons were buffed and tweaked, so now they are quite useful for killing or finishing off damaged zombies.

1x Slot Weapons

Axe

A powerful weapon that allows you to deal with more than one zombie sometimes. Deals not really that much damage as you might think, but it is compensated by its attack speed. Can be useful, if you team up with another survivor who can cover you when needed.

Baseball Bat (Wooden and Aluminum)
Takes only one inventory slot, deals medium damage and the swing speed is not very fast. Also a good melee weapon for finishing off a damaged zombie, if you got someone to cover your back.

Crowbar

A classic melee weapon known for being in Half-Life series. Deals a decent damage, has a medium range and attacking speed. Good for 1vs1 situations when you got no guns or ammo.

Frying Pan

One of the weapons you might spawn in on a new round. Deals pretty decent damage but the attacking speed is slow. Not an assault weapon, but useful when you have your back covered.

Keyboard

The most weak melee weapon in the game. The damage is a joke, the attacking speed is somewhat okay, but the range is very low. You can only spawn with this weapon as a late joined survivor. Each time you hit and deal the damage to someone, the game will type random letters in chat from your person with (KEYBOARD) tag.

Machete

This weapon is similiar to the axe. However it has an even faster swinging speed, but the range is a bit lower compared to an axe. Still a very good melee weapon to have in your hands while dealing with 1-2 zombies.

Pipe

Has the stats similiar to the frying pan. Better than nothing.

Pipe Wrench

A generic pipe wrench. It deals decent damage, but attacking speed is similiar to the frying pan.

Wooden Plank

One of the weapons you might spawn when the new round starts. You will also spawn with this melee weapon as late joined survivor. It has low damage (but better than a keyboard), fast attacking speed and low range. Good for breaking stuff such as crates, small barricades, etc. You might want to switch to a better melee weapon if you have a chance, because with this melee weapon you won't stand a chance even versus just one zombie.

Pot

Another weapon given when a new round starts. Deals okay damage, the attacking speed is close to the crowbar.

Spanner

Almost the same as a pipe wrench.

Tireiron

A good weapon for finishing off damaged zombies, if you got your back covered. Deals medium damage, has a slow attacking speed and medium range.

Wrench

Another melee weapon that has similiar stats to pipe wrench, but the range is a bit smaller. Still good to use to take down one zombie.

2x Slots Weapons
These weapons deal more damage, but these are risky to use. You can prepare and hold your melee weapon attack before striking (Hold Mouse1 or Left Mouse Button), but this will consume your stamina a bit faster.

Chair

Quick attacking speed, good damage, zombies will fly away when killed by this chair.

Golf Club

Deals lowest damage of all melee weapons in "2x slot" category, however the attacking speed is very fast, allowing you to deal with zombies easier.

Sledgehammer.

Heavy and capable of killing normal zombies with just one hit in head. However, this weapon has a very slow attacking speed, which makes it very risky and difficult to use. Sometimes it's good to use as a support weapon, if you team up in one group with other survivor(s).

Shovel

Unlike a sledgehammer, the shovel is not capable of killing zombies with just one hit. The range of this weapon is greater than rest of melee weapons. It deals decent damage and can be fun to use. Also good as a support weapon, but is good enough for 1vs1 situations.
Zombie Team
It's obvious what they are and what they are here for. Remains of your previously known friend or survivor or whatever you call it. There are only 2 types of zombies:

The Carrier

Also known as "Patient Zero", "Alpha Zombie" and the most common one "Whitey" (a nickname given by the community).

Some people simply believe this is just some random muscle guy, some people simply don't care and try to deal with him whenever they can.
Carriers are the only ones who can infect survivors, use the Roar ability as well as "spot" the survivors, more on that below.

These zombies take more damage before dying, have slightly higher movement speed compared to regular zombies, and they also deal more damage than average zombies as well (this guy can kill you in 3 hits). Survivors will do their best to deal with this type of zombie first before engaging with rest of the zombies. If you were auto-assigned on the Zombie Team, you will notice that your character has white bloody arms: that means you are the Carrier. What also makes Carrier special is that he actually can speak, because he's more intelligent than your average zombie.

Normal Carrier (on the left) and Hardcore variant (on the right).

Regular Zombie

Nothing more than remains of your previously known survivor: another victim of the Carrier. These zombies can't infect, roar or "spot" survivors. They deal a bit less damage and have lower movement speed compared to the Carrier. Sometimes normal zombies can be seen as one of the starting zombies along with the Carrier. The amount of regular zombies at the beginning of the round depends on how many people are playing (for example, if too many players enlisted to play as the survivor).

Zombie's Heads up Display
1 - Zombie's lives (respawn points).
2 - Summary health of all nearby zombies (including your health) within cetrain radius. This helps to tell how many fellow zombies you have around and also allows you to form up horde and plan on attacking survivors together.
3 - Your Feed-O-Meter bar. (Zombie stamina)
4 - Your personal health (For regular zombie 200 HP).
5 - Fatigued survivor.
6 - Breakable door.

Zombie Abilities

Zombie Vision
Zombie Vision allows all zombies to see better in darkness. It can also highlight fatigued survivors:
- The light red color means survivor somewhat tired and somewhat slow.
- The bright red color means survivor is exhausted and will move very slowly, depending on his weight.
- Survivors that have a lot of stamina or haven't moved at all in 3-4 seconds will not be highlighted.

Z-Vision also allows you figure out which doors are breakable and allows you to find zombie-only ladders. Whenever you toggle zombie vision, blood veins will appear around your screen, indicating that you enabled zombie vision. You will also notice that your surroundings will be brighter.

Pushing off the barricades\props
Sometimes survivors will barricade themselves by using furniture and similiar objects. You can push these objects away by standing close to these and pressing Right mouse button. You can push barricades further away if you combine lunge with pushing.

To perform it: While walking forward and using lunge, press Right mouse button. If done correctly, your Feed-O-Meter will be drained by 20% and the barricade might fly to the other side of the room. Some heavy furniture objects such as couches can actually kill survivors due to prop damage, so pushing objects away combined with lunge can be useful (and comical!).

Lunge
You can lunge yourself towards a survivor as long as you have Feed-O-Meter. It gives you a small speed boost.

Feed-O-Meter
A simple bar allowing you to lunge and use Berserk mode. Carriers also need their Feed-O-Meter in order to use the Roar or "spot" a survivor. Feed-O-Meter can be refilled with one simple way: damaging survivors. Each successful hit will provide you with 25% of Feed-O-Meter, allowing you to use abilities once again.

If you haven't used your Feed-O-Meter, but you have also attacked a survivor, your Feed-O-Meter will start turning red. Once you fill your Feed-O-Meter with red, it will start flashing, that means berzerk mode is ready for use.

Example of Feed-O-Meter being filled with red until Berserk is ready.

Berserk Mode
Its not really a common thing to see zombies berserking, but still, it's extremely useful when you need to deal with medium or big sized group of survivors. Carriers using Berserk mode also rare to see, but once they use that - they will turn into almost unstoppable killer machine. Berzerking zombies can also catch up with panicking suvivors quite easily due to fairly great speed boost, but it highly depends on the moment when you want to use the Berserk.

To use berzerk mode, first you need to make sure your Feed-O-Meter is full with red color and glowing. Then you can press Left Shift button to activate berzerk.
Activating berzerk will drain all of your Feed-O-Meter and will allow you attack and move faster for 10 seconds.

Infection Transmission (Carrier only)
As a carrier, you have a chance to infect survivors and then turn them into zombies. By default, the infection chance is set to 10%. In order to infect somebody, you just need to keep smacking survivors until you see them having a green glow. Zombies even with no active zombie vision can identify who is infected.

There is no cure for infection, so once the player is infected - he's done for it, allowing you to target other survivors. You better think twice before attacking infected survivor (unless he's the last one). Better allow your fellow infected survivor backstab other survivors and earn your team more easy kills.

However, keep in mind that playing on Hardcore gamemode allows survivors to use bottles of pills in order to get themselves cured. In that case, you probably want to kill survivor even if he is infected.

Infected survivor.

Roar (Carrier only)
Roar allows you to highlight in yellow color and also makes zombies spawn closer to your location(depending on spawn points for zombies).
Every zombie will be able to see your yellow silhouette regardless where they are.
To use roar press R button. Your Feed-O-Meter will start glowing yellow color and slowly drain out. While having roar active, Carrier will issue sounds, alerting near by survivors about your presence, so be careful with that. (The image below uses 400% speed which is why you see it draining here too fast.)

Feed-O-Meter when Roar is active

Spot (Carrier only)
This is useful feature for Carrier allowing other zombies figure out where the survivor is.
To use it, you need to make sure you have at least 35% of Feed-O-Meter bar available. Then you need to get somewhat close to survivor and look at them until you'll see dark orange silhouette. Once you see it, press E button to spot them. If you did it right, survivor's silhouette will turn into red color.
Every single zombie will be alerted due to a special sound effect(survivors will be alerted as well), will be able to see that spotted survivor regardless how far they are.

Marked survivors appear to be visible through walls while the "marked" effect lingers for a period of time.
Gamemodes
Currently and officially, there are 3 gamemodes available in Zombie Panic! Source.

Survival (zps_ prefix maps)

Survivor Team Goals

In Survival gamemode in order to win you and your fellow survivors must stay alive for 15 minutes or kill all the zombies to ensure they will never return.

Zombie Team Goals

Zombies will do their best to kill all survivors. In Survival gamemode, zombies depend on their zombie lives. How many zombie lives do they have? It depends on the amount of players connected to the server. Usually, it will be around ~20 lives. Zombies must be careful and conserve their lives if possible; they must ensure they are not wasting these if they wish to win.

Objective (zpo_ prefix maps)

Survivor Team Goals

In Objective gamemode, survivors must complete all objectives if they wish to win the game. You can't hide and wait due to the round time (45 minutes) and you can't kill all zombies, as they have unlimited lives and will keep coming. Do the objectives and maybe just maybe, you will escape from all that Hell.

The objectives may vary from simple "Defend the House" (zpo_harvest) to "Find the Keys (zpo_biotec, zpo_zomboeing etc).

Delivery Items

On some maps you may find so called "Delivery Items". These are special items that you can pick up just like any other weapon; however, you cannot attack using "delivery item". Some items are too heavy and require both hands to carry, which means you cannot use your weapons while carrying certain objective items.

There are two types of objective items with their own gimmicks:
  • Delivery - A very common type of objective item. This is an item that you have to carry to a specific spot/zone and drop it from your inventory right there.
  • Useable - unlike a "Delivery" type, when delivered, this one requires you to have it in your inventory, equip it and press your Primary Attack key in order to use it.

Side Note: There is actually a third type, but it's not really designed to be used for the objectives. The third type is a "Food" item, which basically can restore you a specific amount of health (depends on a map). What makes it special is that it can be used as a portable medkit of some sort. Currently none of the official maps has/uses this type of delivery items. The community map creators still able to use it on their maps though.

Zombie Team Goals

Unlike Survival gamemode, Objective gamemode offers zombies more ways to prevent survivors from winning than just killing every single survivor, but killing all survivors is still the easiest way to win for zombies. Depending on the map, sometimes there will be situations where zombies will win even when there are a couple survivors left alive (example: Final objective on zpo_biotec). That happens if survivors fail to complete certain objectives.

Hardcore (zph_ prefix maps)

Same as Survival gamemode but with a few tweaks to the balance to make it more "hardcore".

  • Survivors must survive long enough if they wish to win. (Timer is shown on top of the screen.)
  • Zombies have much more lives but these are not unlimited, just like in survival gamemode.
  • Zombies can have up to 6 carriers from start.
  • Zombies take much less damage whenever getting hit in the chest, legs or arms (headshots still do more damage).
  • Each survivor's death extends timer by 30 seconds.
  • Infection chance by carriers increased to 30%, infection can be cured or delayed by using a bottle of pills.
  • Infected survivors will turn into Carriers.
  • The flashlight battery is not shown in this mode.
  • Survivors who got hit might get deafness effect for a few seconds.

Side Note: One gimmick to mention about hardcore gamemode. Via one special server variable, hardcore gamemode rules can be enabled on the "zps_" and "zpo_" maps as well, which makes this gamemode stand out from other gamemodes even more.

Additional Notes
Here are some extra information you should know in-game:
  1. Muting\gagging players locally.
Sometimes you might encounter players being either toxic, angry or simply annoying in text or voice chats. You can mute and gag these people by doing the following steps:
    • Press ESC button and then click on PLAYER LIST
    • In the new window, look for nickname of suspected person and double click on it
      or
You can simply hit "Mute in-game voice." in same window below.
    • If done correctly, you will see MUTED next to suspected player's name.

By doing that, you are blocking all voice communications as well as text communications from the player.

Player names were changed to prevent "name and shame".

  2. Crouch-Jumping
It is highly recommended to know how to perform crouch jumping, as most obstacles require that.
To perform crouch-jump you need to press Left Control button and then in mere same second tap once Spacebar. Of course, do not forget to hold W button whenever trying to jump over obstacles.
Below you can see how it works in practice.

  3. Only pistols can shoot while you are underwater.
It's uncommon for survivors to be underwater and have to shoot, but still, most of your guns will not fire when you are under the water. PPK, USP, Glocks are capable of shooting when under the water though. If you want shoot with heavier weapons, you need to swim up and only then start shooting, assuming you remember where that zombie is.

  4. Reloading too often?
Whenever you reload your weapon, while doing so, you cannot perform certain actions until you finish reloading. That means you cannot pick up the items, interact with the environment, open/close doors etc. Be sure to reload only when you really need to.

  5. Got assigned to zombie team? Died as survivor and now you are zombie? Well please finish the round.
Reconnecting, ragequitting or just simply staying AFK until new round starts just to avoid playing as a zombie is considered as "zombie-skipping". If you died as survivor or got auto-assigned to zombie team on a start of new round, please finish the game as zombie.
You are not making things better when you are zombie-skipping. You are damaging both teams and disrupting gameplay in general. Zombies are the core of the gameplay after all.
Certain servers may and will take an action against these kind of players, starting from slaying/exploding them, doing verbal warnings in text/voice chat and ending up banning you permanently.

  6. "How do you pick up stuff?"
Many new players are having trouble with picking up stuff in Zombie Panic! Source. In this game it's not enough to just walk over an item to pick it up. It's not Half-Life 2 or Quake or something like that. To pick up the stuff here, you have to look/aim at an item until it glows yellow (or red, if it's an empty weapon) and press your action key (E by default).

  7. Constant jumping will slow you down.
Lots of players seem to be simply jumping around or be trying to perform bunnyhopping (which is disabled by default on most of the servers). Each time you try to bunnyhop or simply keep continuously jumping around, you will lose your stamina (as a survivor) and be slowed down until you'll be unable to move whatsoever. Do not jump around for no apparent reason, you will not get any closer to that survivor (while playing as a zombie), or escape while being chased (while playing as a survivor). Keep in mind that only very few community servers have bunnyhopping enabled, though do not expect official servers having that option enabled.
