3 What is Industrial Relations?

4 It is important that employees have a good relationship with their employer.
Employees should be able to discuss problems with their employer. Employers should be willing to listen to employees and make improvements.

5 Benefits of Good Industrial Relations
To employees: Not loose their wages or job. Happy in their job. Good atmosphere in the workplace. Morale will increase. To employer: Firm will not lose money or customers. Happy employees work harder which leads to higher profits. Firm’s sales will increase and so will profits. Firm will have a good name along the general public.

6 Trade Unions When new employees join a business organisation, they may be asked to join a trade union. Trade unions can provide a lot of help and support for the employee by protecting their jobs improving their working conditions.

8 FUNCTIONS OF A TRADE UNION
Protect their members jobs. Try to improve their members' working conditions, e.g. making sure the workplace is heated properly. Increase their members’ pay. To stand up for their members if they are involved in a trade dispute with their employer and to do everything they cam to try to solve the problem.

9 TYPES OF TRADE UNIONS There are 4 types of Trade Unions: CRAFT
INDUSTRIAL GENERAL WHITE - COLLAR

10 CRAFT UNIONS Members have a trade or craft.
E.g. Brick and Stonelayers’ Trade Union.

11 INDUSTRIAL UNIONS Represents all workers in an industry.
Examples: IBOA (Irish Bank Officials’ Association), POA (Prison Officers' Association).

12 GENERAL UNIONS Members come from different industries.
Example: SIPTU (Services, Industrial, Professional and Trade Union).

13 White - Collar Unions Members are professional.
Examples: ASTI (Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland), NUJ (National Union of Journalists).

14 SHOP STEWARD DUTIES OF A SHOP STEWARD:
Act as intermediary between union members and union head office. Represents members in their dealings with management. Recruits new members. Collects subscriptions. Gives advice to members on industrial relations issues.
