7 METAPHOR A Metaphor is a figure of speech in which things are compared by stating that one thing is another. Does not use “Like” or “As”.

8 Metaphor The boy was a fish in the water.

9 Metaphor The pillow was a cloud when I put my head on it after a long hard day.

10 Metaphor Her hair was a knot of tangled rope.

11 Metaphor The clown was a feather floating away.

12 Metaphor Her fingernails were razors on the chalkboard.

13 Practice: Simile or Metaphor
1. Amy is as sweet as candy. 2. Bob is a deer when he runs. 3. Tony is as skinny as a rail. 4. Dan was a hog during lunch. 5. The moon was a nightlight guiding my way. 6. The dog ran like a train when he heard the gun shot.

14 Review: A SIMILE compares two things using the words “Like” or “As”.
A METAHOR states compares two things by stating that one thing is another. It does not use the words “Like” or “As”.
