There was a huge initial leap in the number of children attending primary school in the early 2000's (between 2000-2007).
|
The progress towards the goal of all children attending primary school stagnated in 2007 and there were no major improvements seen between 2007 and 2012.
Countries that were experiencing conflict had significantly lower primary school enrollment rates than other countries. There are not actions being taken through Millennium Development Goals that address achieving peace in developing nations. Out of the 58 million school children that are not attending primary school, half of them are residing in countries that are experiencing conflict. The percentage of children that completed their primary education after enrolling did not increase very much, if at all, between 2000-2011. The two tables (the one on the left and the one below) show us the discrepancy between pupils who were enrolled in primary school and pupils who completed primary school. For example, in Oceania in 2012 the net enrollment rate was 89%, however the percentage of primary students who completed primary school in 2011 was only 50%.
Literacy rates amongst youth and adults, though they have improved, are still lagging, even in people that have received primary education. In 2012 there was 781 million adults and 126 million youth who still did not have the basic ability to read and write. |
