Best electric wire: Electric wire is like a thread-like structure that conducts electricity. There are some factors on which we choose the best electric wire. Aluminum and copper are the best electric wires.

Properties of conductors or characteristics of conductors:- properties of conducting materials are

  1. High electrical conductivity.

  2. High tensile strength

  3. Should be lower cost.

  4. Most important is the lower weight per unit volume.

Conductivity: We can define conductivity as a property of the material that conducts electricity or heat. The electrical conductivity of metals is high and also electrical conductivity of conductors is also high.

Conductive: Conductive meaning in English is having the property of conducting something. (heat or electricity)

Non-conductive metals: All the metals are conductive. But some of the metals that have low conductivity may be called non-conductive metals. E.g., Tungsten, titanium, mercury, etc,

These metals have high resistivity and low conductivity.

Difference between type 1 and type 2 superconductors

Type 1 superconductor

Type 2 superconductor

They are soft superconductor

Type 2 are hard conductors

Type 1 superconductors have a low critical temperature. (0 K to 10 K ).

These superconductors have high critical temperatures. ( above 10 K).

Type 1 superconductors are pure metals.

Whereas, type 2 superconductors are alloys.

These are diamagnetic in nature.

E.g., Hg, Zn, Pb.

Type2 superconductors are not completely diamagnetics. E.g., Nb₃Sn, NbTi.

  • Carbon, silicon, and germanium: Carbon, silicon, and germanium have four electrons each. Their conduction and valence bands are separated by the energy gap. The energy gap of carbon, silicon, and germanium are (E?)c, (E?)si, and (E?)g. So,

(E?)c, >(E?)si > (E?)g

It means the energy gap between the carbon is more than the silicon and germanium. The energy gap of carbon is 5.4eV, the energy gap of silicon is 1.1eV and the energy gap of germanium is 0.7eV. This is the reason that carbon is an insulator and germanium and silicon are semiconductors.

  • Is silicon a good conductor of electricity: Silicon is not a good conductor of electricity. The property of silicons varies between the conductors and insulators. Hence, silicon is a semiconductor.

  • Does germanium conduct electricity: Yes, germanium conduct electricity

  • Commonly used conducting materials: Commonly used conducting materials are Copper, aluminum, silver-coated copper, and nickel-coated copper are some

  • All conductors of electricity are magnetic substances: All conductors of electricity are not magnetic substances. Some of the electric conductors like iron, nickel, cobalt, etc. are made up of magnetic substances, they are ferromagnetic. But some of the electrical conductors like gold, silver, copper, aluminum, etc. are not attracted by magnets. So we can say all conductors of electricity are not magnetic substances.

  • The flow of electric charge in a metallic conductor: We know that metal is made up of atoms. Every atom has a negative charge particle known as an electron. When we applied an electric field to the metallic conductor ( copper, silver, aluminum, etc., ) then the flow of (electrons) electric charge in a metallic conductor and current starts to flow.

  • What is a metallic conductor: We can define metallic conductors as “The metal which conducts electricity is a metallic conductor’.

  • Copper is used for making electrical conductors: Copper is used for making electrical conductors because it conducts electricity and has low resistivity.

Materials are divided into two classes: Conductors and insulators.

Here we discuss the transfer of electricity through the materials.

  • Conductor definition electricity materials through which electrical charges can easily flow, and divided into two parts Good conductor and bad conductors of electricity while

  • Insulators are those through which electrical charges are difficult to flow.

So based on the number of free electrons, we can distinguish between the conductors and insulators. Why conductor conducts electricity because a large number of the free electrons, present in the conductors which act as charge carriers in conductors, while the insulators have no free electrons. Metals are conductors and the flow of electric charge in a metallic conductor is easy.

What is the best conductor of electricity? :- Best electricity conductors are those who conduct electricity easily. The best conductors of electricity are copper, aluminum, iron, gold, silver, and, mercury, etc,

In fig, a circuit is shown, which is connected with a copper wire current flowing through the copper wire. Does copper conduct electricity? Yes, because copper is a good conductor of electricity.

  • Types of conductors materials

A conductor is the most important component of transmission lines.

  • Conductors materials

Electrical properties of conductive materials: Properties of conductive materials are:-The material must be a good conductor, have high tensile strength, have ductility, and have a lower cost. Copper was the most preferred material in earlier days but due to its high cost, it is replaced by aluminum. Because aluminum is cheaper than copper and it also has a lower weight. There are some conductors which are considered to be good conductors of electricity.

  • Copper: Copper is a conductor of electricity. It has high conductivity and greater tensile strength. Copper is non-magnetic metal and has good physical, chemical, and electrical properties. Copper has free electrons in its outer orbital shell due to this it is the best conductor of electricity. Copper is available in hard-drawn and annealed form. Annealed copper has different mechanical properties, annealed copper is soft and has a less tensile strength in comparison to hard drawn copper. The resistivity of annealed copper is 1.72x10^8 ohm-m and the resistivity of hard drawn copper is 1.72x10^-8 ohm-m, so the conductivity of hard-drawn copper is less than the annealed copper. Copper can easily be soldered and welded. Copper has a high current carrying capacity per unit cross-sectional area due to its high current density. Hard copper is used in overhead conductors, high voltage underground cables, and bus bars because of its high mechanical strength, and annealed copper is used in low voltage power cables, winding wires, making coils, and inflexible wires. Copper is durable and has a high scrap value, but because of its high cost and non-availability copper is rarely utilized in transmission lines.

Copper wire Copper wire

  • Aluminum: Aluminium is widely available in India. It is the most effective conductor of electricity after copper. Aluminum also has free electrons in its outer valence shell. Aluminum is a much lighter conductor than copper but its tensile strength is less than copper. It can be easily rolled and hard-drawn like copper. Aluminum is soft metal but alloyed with some other metals like magnesium, iron, etc. Its resistivity is 2.8x10^-8 ohm-m means 1.6 times higher than the copper It can be drawn into thin wires. Aluminum is used for flexible wires, overhead transmission lines, bus bars, squirrel cage induction motor rotor bars, etc,
    Aluminum:

  • Silver: Pure silver has high conductivity and lower resistivity than any other metals but due to its high cost it is not used as a conducting material (or making wires) but sometimes it is used where high resistance is not required. It is soft metal but to make it harder 15% of copper is added to it.
    Silver:

  • Gold: It is the best known electrical conductor but due to not being present in sufficient quantity to make it economical. Gold is found in the core of the metal. It melts at 1063C and boils at 2700C. It is malleable and ductile and due to this property, it can easily be beaten into translucent sheets.
    Gold Sheet

  • Steel: Steel is the combination of iron with a small percentage of carbon. Iron is not very strong but when carbon is added it assumes very good mechanical properties. Tensile strength of the steel increases in addition to a small amount of carbon but its ductility decreases. The resistivity of steel is 8 to 9 times higher than copper. This is the main reason why steel is not used as conducting material.
    Steel:

  • Iron: Iron is also a good conductor of electricity due to free electrons in its valence shell. But it is not used in making electrical wires due to its higher resistivity than any other metals. It can easily corrode when exposed to moisture and is used for making alloys like steel.
    Iron (Fe)

Types of conductors used in transmission lines

Classification of conductors are:-Aluminum conductors replaced copper due to its cheaper cost, tensile strength, weight, and conductivity in overhead transmission lines. There are the following types of conductors used in transmission lines which are made up of aluminum.

  • AAC (All Aluminium conductor)

  • AAAC (All Aluminium Conductor Alloy)

  • ACSR ( Aluminium Conductor, Steel Reinforced)

  • ACAR (Aluminum conductor, Alloy Reinforced)

  • AAC: All Aluminium conductor is also known as Aluminium Stranded Conductor (ASC). It is made up of strands of electrical conductor grade aluminum or EC grade. AAC has conductivity about 61% of IACS ( international annealed copper standard). It has good conductivity but due to its poor strength, it is less used in transmission lines. However, AAC is employed in urban areas for distribution lines where spans are short but higher conductivity is required.
    AACAAC

  • AAAC: All Aluminium Alloy Conductor is made up of an aluminum alloy which is high strength aluminum magnesium-silicon alloy. AAAC has a conductivity of about 52.5% IACS and also has good mechanical strength. It is lighter in comparison to ACSR and has equal strength and current capacity.AAAC can be used in coastal areas because of its excellent corrosion resistance.
    AAAC

  • ACSR: Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced consists of a solid or stranded steel with one or more layers of high purity aluminum wires wrapped in a spiral. Zinc coated (galvanized) steel or aluminum coated (aluminized) steel is used for core wires. Galvanization or Aluminization coating is used to protect the steel from corrosion by applying a thin layer.ACSR conductors are very widely used for all transmission and distribution purposes.
    ACSR

  • ACAR: Aluminium Conductor Alloy Reinforced is formed by wrapping strands of high purity aluminum on high strength aluminum alloy (Aluminium-magnesium-silicon alloy). ACAR has good electrical and mechanical properties.

  • Superconductivity: The resistivity of most of the metals increases with an increase in temperature and vice versa. Some of the metals whose resistivity is zero degrees, Kelvin, at this stage metals are attained superconductivity. The transition from normal conductivity to superconductivity takes place almost suddenly; it occurs over a number of narrow ranges of about 0.05-degree Kelvin. The temperature at which the transition takes place from the state of normal conductivity to that of superconductivity is named transition temperature.
