Northern Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum pedatum) Also known as Five Fingered Fern

Northern maidenhair ferns are a great addition to shady gardens, or any slightly moist area with bright, indirect light. Likes rich moist soils with good drainage. Soil should be moist, but do not over water. If too wet, plants will root rot and struggle. If too dry or in full sun, ferns will struggle or die. The fine texture of its fronds adds contrast to hostas, hydrangea, Bear's Breeches and other large leafed shade plants. This fern spreads by rhizomes, forming patches slowly over time.  Fiddleheads are a reddish purple. Stems are black or dark purple.

This deciduous, perennial, dainty fern is native to southern Alaska, Washington, Oregon, coastal California, the Rocky Mountains, northern and northeastern states.  Hardy in USDA zones 3 – 8.

Northern maidenhair ferns are also a popular houseplant because of their attractive fine textured foliage and compact size. Also can be planted in terrariums.  Likes indirect or dappled light and no direct sun. Requires high humidity. Is not drought tolerant and will die if it dries out. If planting in a container inside a house, pick a small container, mist and keep in a warm environment.  Make sure your potting mix is well draining, like our general Purpose Greenhouse Potting mix.
