Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS)

A neurological disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system resulting in symmetrical muscle weakness ranging from mild weakness to severe palsy of all limbs or paralysis. Symptoms start as weakness and tingling in the feet and legs that spread to the upper body.  The condition may be triggered by an acute bacterial or viral infection.  Physical therapy is needed to help cope with fatigue and regain strength and proper movement.

Potential treatments include:  Passive/active assistive movement of arms and legs, Class IV laser to restore energy and function to damaged cells, electrical stimulation to reinforce nerve connections to muscles, assistive devices for mobility safety, balance and gait training, home exercise, education of patient/family/caregiver.
