Compeer Rochester kicks off its Walk a Milestone fundraiser today with an in-person event at Blossom Road Pub from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Walk a Milestone is a virtual fundraising event that runs from November 22 to 28 to support community members who may be dealing with seasonal depression/seasonal affective disorder.

For more than 45 years, Compeer Rochester has worked to break the stigma of mental illness in the Rochester community through friendship. Compeer’s community-based mental health model uses the healing power of friendships to serve as a bridge to enhanced wellness and community integration for those with social and emotional barriers.

Seasonal affective disorder often occurs in climates where there is less sunlight at certain times of the year and symptoms include fatigue, depression, hopelessness, and social withdrawal. As the community begins embracing the Rochester cold, many people are starting to feel the effects of seasonal affective disorder on top of the continuing COVID-19 and racial pandemics.

“So many people retreat in the cold weather here in Rochester,” said Sara Passamonte, Compeer Rochester’s executive director. “What better motivation than this cause to raise awareness.”
