Babar Ali – An Underrated Film Actor from Pakistan

It was 1995 when Syed Noor presented Babar Ali and Resham in his directorial film “Jeeva”. Among other stars were Nadeem Baig, Neeli, Ghulam Mohyuddin and Javed Sheikh. Film was a big hit at box office and it laid foundation of golden era of Fim industry in Pakistan. Families came back to cinemas.

Babar Ali had worked in famous TV plays Qutab-ud-Din Aibak and Nangay Paaoon before moving to silver screen. People welcomed Babar Ali and Resham and it paved a path to success to both of them. Then Babar continued his journey of success with films like Munda Bigra Jaaye, Love 95, Jo Darr Gaya Woh Marr Gaya, Sarak, Chor Machaye Shor, Mujhay Jeenay Do, Khuda Jaanay, Harjaayi, Zevar, Karz, Deewarain and many others. He was mostly paired with Reema. Babar got appreciation for his acting skills. At that time Shan, Babar Ali, Afzal Khan Rambo and Saud were the mostly cast male performers. Javed Sheikh and his younger brother Saleem Sheikh also made appearances but their margin was low.

Babar Ali

Unfortunately, after the great success of Punjabi flick Choorian, our film makers started making Punjabi films again. On the other side, due to weak story lines, people lost their interest in Pakistani films. That time Shan and Moammer Rana were being preferred for Punjabi movies. Babar made some mistakes in his career and producers and directors got away from him. He was being offered villain’s roles. No doubt, he always did justice to his roles, but his fate was no more kind to him and he got off from movies.

In 2002, Ajab Gul directed movie “Khoye Ho Tum Kahan” with Babar Ali in leading role opposite Ajab Gul and Meera. Film was a mega hit and once again Babar Ali proved that he was a borne actor. Music, direction, story line and Babar Ali’s performance were the USP of “Khoye Ho Tum Kahan”. Then in 2012, Babar Ali performed in TV Serial “Eik Nazar Meri Taraf” and won everyone with his natural acting in a difficult role.

Though Babar Ali has always been my favourite actor, but if I am asked to share what I liked most, I would mention movies “Karz” and “Deewarain”. Babar Ali gave mind blowing performance in these two movies.

I would request our film makers to bring Babar Ali back on silver screen.
