Austin Butler Says His Dune Counterpart Sting Offered to 'Let Me Wear' His Codpiece from Original Movie

Sting is sharing some movie memorabilia with his Dune counterpart Austin Butler.

When Butler, 32, appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Monday, the Dune: Part Two star shared that he got to meet Sting — real name Gordon Matthew Sumner — at the new movie's New York City premiere on Sunday.

"I met him last night, he came to the premiere. It was so surreal. My mind was blown. He's the best," Butler said of meeting the former Police singer/bassist, 72, who previously played Butler's Dune character Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in filmmaker David Lynch's 1984 adaptation of Dune.

"He came up afterward, and he was so, so, lovely and just debonair," Butler said of their meeting. "I asked him about [starring in the original Dune movie] and he said he still has the codpiece from the original [Dune], he said he's going to dry clean it and let me wear it if I want to."

Sting played the villain Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in 1984's Dune, which costarred Kyle MacLachlan as Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet's character) and envisioned the villain as a red-haired man. Denis Villeneuve's new Dune movies split the iconic 1965 Frank Herbert novel into two parts, and as such, Feyd-Rautha did not appear in 2021's Dune: Part One. Trailers for the new movie tease him as a primary antagonist for Chalamet, 28, in the sequel.

In the new movie, Butler portrays the character as a completely bald and ruthless killer. "The thing with a villainous character — I'd never played a character quite like him, and I didn't want to judge him, so it was a lot of imagining what his childhood was like," Butler said of adapting to the role on The Tonight Show.

Butler recently shared with the Los Angeles Times that he and Chalamet only met for the first time when they began rehearsing stunts for the new movie in Hungary. "We basically said hello and then got down to work on the fight, trying to kill each other," he said.

While Butler told Fallon on Monday that he did not stay for Sunday's Dune: Part Two premiere screening in N.Y.C., he did catch the movie during a recent event in Mexico City and plans to see it once more in IMAX.

"That was surreal; there was 4,500 fans in the audience and they were screaming and I'd never been in a movie with that many people before, it was incredible," he said of the screening.

Dune: Part Two is in theaters Friday.
