The luxury express night train would be the first to run from Los Angeles to San Francisco in over 40 years.

ORANGE COUNTY, CA — A project designed to further connect San Francisco and Los Angeles with a high-speed overnight train is one step closer to becoming reality, after Dreamstar Lines came into agreement with freight giant, Union Pacific Railroad.

The Newport Beach-based transit start-up signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Union Pacific Railroad last month, a step that will pave the way for the two entities to come up with a final agreement that would allow Dreamstar to run its trains on tracks owned by Union Pacific, according to a Dreamstar news release.

Dreamstar hopes to start the luxury overnight service by summer 2025, according to the release. Union Pacific owns much of the 470-mile route needed to run the service from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

According to SFGate, Dreamstar also needs agreements to use tracks owned by regional transit operators Caltrain and Metrolink. No night train has connected the Bay Area and Los Angeles since 1983, SFGate reported.

"We're in talks with both and working towards acceptable terms for track access," Dreamstar CEO Joshua Dominic told SFGate. "Both have been wonderful to work with and communicated interest toward getting our trains rolling."

According to KTLA, Dreamstar traincars will have the "luxury and convenience of modern amenities and technology" and next-generation sleeper cars with private rooms and beds that allow riders to lie down. Deluxe accommodations with larger beds and en-suite showers will also be offered, KTLA reported.

The company is aiming to have tickets for the service range from $300 to $1,000.
