Culinary creativity reigns in Salad Toss Off

The culinarily creative flocked to the seventh annual Salad Toss Off hosted by Maneesh Goyal and his partner Andrew Wingrove at their Union Square loft Sunday. Every year, Goyal, who helms his own marketing firm MKG, challenges friends to come up with the most creative salads for the competition. This year, the 30 participants dressed up as well as their greens — a bouncer stood guard next to a bowl of Good & Plenty that looked like prescription drugs in a disco ball, while sea salt lay in fat lines next to syringes to make up the “Salad 54. ” (Get it?) One couple donned sombreros and served tequila shots with their “South of the Border” salad, another dressed in a full Hazmat suit accompanying the “Breaking Bad” salad. Designer Prabal Gurung, and “Top Chef” Judge Gail Simmons were among those who took part in the competition. Judging was fierce — by Eater.com’s Ben Leventhal, Bevy Smith, designer Cynthia Rowley and Nigel Barker. The winning salad was called the Take Stock Salad, inspired by Wall Street and dubbed “Too Tasty To Fail” by its creators.
