Government agencies and legitimate companies don’t call people out of the blue with threats or promises of money. Never click a link or call a phone number sent to you through email or text. These phone numbers and links could lead you straight to the scammers. It's ok to slow down and question every single time you are contacted by a company or agency that is requesting personal information or money. Best to let these calls go to voicemail and simply not responding to the texts. Then find a number you know to be correct for the agency or company and contact them to ensure they were attempting to contact you. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

Don't be this guy! It's not a miracle or fate that brought you together, it's crime. These wrong number text messages seem like an innocent mistake but it is actually the beginning of a long-game con put together by a scammer. They work over a period of days or weeks to build a relationship with you so you will be more susceptible to a scam. Some may try to build a romantic relationship with you using fake photos so you will be willing to send them money for various needs (travel to see you, clothing for your date, etc.). Others may try to get you to invest in a particular crypto currency. Protect your assets and possibly your heart. Do not send money to anyone you haven't met in real life or invest in anything they recommend.

PCSO's Deputy Luis Hernandez has had his identity stolen for romance scams hundreds of times over many years. “I found dozens and dozens… and quickly it became hundreds of different profiles, all using my photos and videos.” After that it snowballed. Just in the last year he’s reported 794 fake accounts, all using his photos, videos, and personal information. Romance Scams have become very sophisticated. Scammers are using real people's photos and personal information -- like they did with Deputy Hernandez -- to fabricate a relationship with someone over a long period of time in hopes of them sending the scammer money. They play the long game to get you to believe it is all real so they can take advantage of you. “The scam like the one that used Captain Melvin Jackson’s name is one we get all the time,” said Economic Crimes Unit Sergeant Berger. “The scammer wants to create a sense of fear using the authority of law enforcement.” “We’re never going to call you up and tell you we have a warrant for your arrest,” said Sergeant Berger. “We’d just show up and knock on your door. And we’re certainly never taking any kinds of payment in gift cards. Whenever someone asks for a payment in gift cards or crypto it’s a scam.” If someone calls saying you have a warrant, you can just hang up. SCAM ALERT: An individual is calling Pinellas County residents and identifying himself as Sergeant Armstrong, informing the citizen they missed a court date and must pay a fine via Zelle or gift cards. THIS IS A SCAM! The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER call citizens requesting money over the telephone and will never ask for banking information to wire money. We advise citizens not to give personal information or account information over the phone and call the Sheriff’s Office to report suspicious activity. If anyone has information on this scam or has become a victim, they are asked to call the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office at (727) 582-6200.
