Motorised bicycles and the law in Qld

On Monday, December 12 at about 1.50pm a traffic incident occurred between a motor vehicle and an engine powered bicycle on Eggersdorf Road, Ormeau.

It will be alleged that a 34-year-old man was riding an internal combustion engine powered bicycle on a footpath without a helmet when he collided into the passenger side of a vehicle exiting a driveway.

The man was treated at the scene by QAS for head injuries before being transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital where he remained in a serious, but stable condition.

There has been an upsurge in complaints regarding internal combustion engine powered bicycles which has highlighted the need to inform the public of the legality surrounding this mode of transport.

Laws relating to motorised bicycles in Queensland relate to bicycles with electric motors. Bicycles with internal powered combustion engines attached are a motorbike and all laws relating to the use of motorbikes apply. This includes road rules, registration, and licencing, and people risk fines and court appearances if caught riding one.
