10 Times and 1/10 the Value of a Number
|
VocabularyPlace value is the value given to the place or position of a digit in a number.
Digits are the symbols or characters used to represent a number visually. 2,538 has four digits. NotesAs you move to the left in the place value chart, the value of each place is 10 times the value of the place before it. As you move to the right in the place value chart, the value of each place is 1/10 the value of the place before it. So in the number 44,000 the digit in the ten thousands place is 10 times the value of the digit in the thousands place because you have moved one place to the left. You could also say that the digit in the thousands place is 1/10 the value of the digit in the ten thousands place because you have moved one place to the right.
If you're given two numbers, you can compare the values of their digits. 57,389 and 93,268 The value of the 8 in the first number is 10 times the value of the 8 in the second number. The value of the 3 in the first number is 1/10 the value of the 3 in the second number. STAAR Released Sample Question
