A few months ago we officially inaugurated the Google Developer Student Clubs (GDSC) at our campus. If you’re wondering what’s the big deal about this club, let me break it down. GDSC is all about tech, innovation, and community. Now, why is this such a big deal, you ask? Well, we are a tier 3 engineering college located in Thane, Mumbai. Opportunities to explore tech on a global platform don’t knock on our doors every day. So, you can imagine the excitement bubbling among the students, myself included. This development was particularly thrilling for someone like me, deeply passionate about AI. The prospect of applying for the AI Lead position for the Google Developer Student Clubs at our campus was an opportunity I couldn’t resist. After a selection process that was more about enthusiasm than formality, I was selected as the AI Lead for GDSC at A.P. Shah Institute of Technology, for the tenure of 2023–2024. This achievement has left me incredibly excited and motivated. Working alongside my team, we are all set to organize a series of engaging events and informative workshops on our campus. Manas Nanivadekar, our GDSC lead, presented me with an exclusive opportunity to facilitate our first-ever campus campaign — The Google Cloud Study Jam!
The Ripple Effect on the Community
I knew this was a golden opportunity for our fellow students to learn about Google Cloud technologies and get certified. We crafted a creative message to share the perks of this program with our college community. We highlighted the benefits of learning Cloud skills, the features of Google Cloud, GenAI, etc. along with the rewards of completing the labs. Beyond the technical knowledge, we highlighted that the campaign will serve as a testament to what collaborative efforts can achieve. It wasn’t just about learning; it was about growing together as a community.
We were amazed by the response we got when we shared the registration link. Within the first 15 minutes of sending the registration links among college community groups, all the 150 spots assigned to our campus were full! This outpouring of interest inspired us to make the Google Cloud Study Jam campaign an unforgettable experience for our participants. We conducted seminars with the registered students, where we explained the objectives and outcomes of the program and guided them through the registration process. We eagerly answered their questions and dispelled any doubts, eager to set them on a path of tech discovery.
Challenges and Creative Solutions
As the facilitator of the campaign, I found myself facing significant challenges, one of which was motivating our students to complete the course and labs within the given deadlines. It was a daunting task, but creativity came to the rescue. In order to solve this challenge, We developed an interactive leaderboard, a simple yet effective tool. This leaderboard was developed using the data from the daily reports from the management team that landed in my inbox every evening at 6:00 PM. We manually updated it each day, enabling participants to see where they stood compared to their peers. This simple addition transformed our campaign. It kindled a spirit of healthy competition and provided a real-time view of our participants’ progress. I still remember one particular incident when a slight delay in updating the leaderboard caused a flurry of excitement and anticipation among the participants. It demonstrated how a little innovation can go a long way in motivating and engaging a community.
