Abstract

Although asbestos fibers are banned in many parts of the world, they are still used in a range of countries, namely Russia. After a historic overview, the origin, deposits, extraction and classification of asbestos fibers is outlined. The chemical composition of the most important types, their properties and applications are explained. The market development for the major producers is shown followed by a detailed description of health hazards and substitute materials.
