About

Breaking Out in Song/Dance is a type of Flash Mob, in which participants spontaneously begin performing a song or dance in a public place. The performance is usually coordinated online through social networking, though some are more rehearsed, and are choreographed by groups such as Improv Everywhere or Break Out In Song.

Origin

Though there have been many flash mobs involving dancing, the first real choreographed one was done in March of 2008 by Improv Everywhere. The flash mob broke out into a musical number about needing a napkin in the middle of a Los Angeles food court.

Derivatives

Since Improv Everywhere's original musical flash mob, many have followed. Similar to other flash mobs, many of these have been done by companies as publicity stunts, such as Trident Unwrapped, T-Mobile, and Fox.
