Edit or ?s Cor n er s Turkish Canadian Society we had another hectic, on the trot three months behind, full of exciting events and organizations. Our 30th August Victory Day Picnic, Istanbul The Band Concert, our Turkish School, our Business Club?s seminar, our ever growing institutionalization efforts, Turkish Film Festival preparations with our Vancouver Turkish Film Festival (VTFF) Committee? We have great news to share with you and many society members we would like to introduce to you.

share the news of our upcoming Vancouver Turkish Film Festival, organized by our VTFF Committee and inform you about the dates and locations. We have a great enthusiastic team working on this matter and this coming year we will enjoy Turkish Films during this festival. On the 11th of March 2017 together with our Japanese friends we will organize a Turkish-Japanese festival collaboratively, so mark your calendars. As the executive board of TCS, we are trying to increase collaborative events with other Societies in Vancouver. We aim to organize a Turkish Festival week, cross your fingers.

But the most exciting, most valuable, most important event of all, our national pride is of course, our Republic Day Dinner. In order to get out of the bottleneck situation our country goes through these last months, we need to show solidarity, and we shall stand in unity and we should protect our national values that we hold dear. That ?s why our Republic Day celebration was a very important organisation for us. Therefore we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all our members, to our Canadian friends and to our team of volunteers who came to join us and supported us during this event.

We have interesting topics, interviews and news about our society members in this issue. Our famous artist, an important figure in Bodrum who came to live in Vancouver, Mr. Engin Dalyanc?; the first prize winner of the Unsigned Only Music Competition under the youth category, our beautiful and talented Alize Tamtürk who made all of us proud; our talented medium- author who published his first novel, Adem Can Vaner; the previous presidents of TCS Güler Aylar, Yusuf Alt?nta? and Erol Karacabeyli; Be?ire Çulhao?lu with her seminal work on ?Non Profit Organizations?; Our Smart Money editor Mine Dery, our Turkish Folk dance team?s Instructor, Gökçen Tekba?; Güler Aylar, sharing her expertise under our Health and Beauty section; our Consul General of Turkish Republic in Vancouver, An?l Bora ?nan and an avid supporter of our Society and owner of Mavi Jeans Canada, Arkun Durmaz . And our young editor Doruk Tosun will share his observations of our 30th August Victory Day Picnic; our teen editors Defne and Ege will share their articles with us as usual.

Another exciting news is that our Turkish school has started in September. Thanks to our volunteer and devoted teacher Ms. Özden Var??l? our first semester has started already. The classes are full of fun. Although our school opens in early hours of Sunday mornings our little students participate to these classes with enthusiasm and joy. On September 18th, we were able to organize a free showing of the movie Ertugrul 1890 to our members and Japanese guests; a co-production of Turkey and Japan with the valuable contributions of Vancouver Consulate General of the Republic of Turkey, Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Vancouver Turkish Film Festival Committee of the Turkish Canadian Society. Pikni?imiz sportmen dernek üyelerimizin heyecanl? futbol kar??la?mas?yla ba?lad?. Sar?l? tak?m ?Ayaks? 30th August Victory Day is one of the most important and glorious national holiday in the hearts of Turkish people, commemorating the unforgettable victory in the Battle of Dumlup?nar; symbolizing the end of the enemy invasion and the end of Turkish War of Independence in 1922. TCS celebrated this very special day on August 28th, at Memorial South Park (Prince Albert Street / 41st ave) with our traditional ?Victory Day Picnic?. As it was the end of summer, we started our preparations with prayers for a sunny day. Lara Cuisine was there with us and Fatma Telli?s delicious Turkish food added another ?joyful flavor ?to our gathering. Our picnic started with an exciting and contentious soccer game with the participation of our precious community members. The yellow team ?Ayaks? (Mustafa Kaymakç?, Adem Aygün, R?dvan Türk, Lemi Caner Sar?dal, Gerçek Özcan Burçak Do?an) beat the white team ?Metrotown Flooring? (Bayram Saraço?lu, Mesut Yeniçare, Ömer Tevfik Çiçek, Gökhan Çetin, Cansoy Gürocak ve Alper Dama) 12 to 7. The whole game was a show of sportsmanship and unfortunately our friend Gökhan Çetin had a slight injury. After the game our food service was ready? We enjoyed and shared our food with the excitement of uniting together for such a symbolic and important day and everybody enjoyed the great conversations with other community members. The Soccer Trophy was presented to the winning team with a cordial ceremony by our President Tolga Tosun and our Consul General An?l Bora ?nan attended this ceremony to support the community. inner after the game they told us with a grin on his face ?Friendship is the winner!? Later on our community members enlisted for an exciting backgammon tournament and showed their skills. We thank all the participants of this backgammon tournament and sayfa / page 8

congratulate the champion of this year our friend Lemi Caner Sar?dal. While grown ups were going through the challenges of this exciting tournament, our youngest Toplum Magazine writers were playing an exciting checkers game at a corner. When we asked them who was the winner after the game they told us with a grin on his face ?Friendship is the winner!? Long story short our picnic was a happy gathering despite the bad weather and occasional rain showers. We were happy to gather for such an important day, we enjoyed the amazing food and the conversations with our community members. We parted promising to meet again during our Republic day Celebration Night on October 22. As Toplum Magazine we would like to express our gratitude to

our Event Organizator Cem Kuluhan, the board members (Tolga Tosun, Sevim Akdeniz, F?rat Ă&#x2013;renc and Senem Ă&#x2013;z) who volunteered for this beautiful and meaningful organization. I would like to mention once more before concluding this article about our picnic, I would like to remind you that we need to show our solidarity during another important event during which we would celebrate the 93rd anniversary of our Republic with pride and glory.

Biz dernek üyeleri ba?kanlar?m?z?n engin deneyimlerinden son derece yararl?bilgiler derlerken, bizlerin sunumlar?n? dinleyen ba?kanlar?m?z da dernek çal??malar? ve vizyonu konusunda merak ettiklerini ö?rendiler, çal??malar?m?z? yorumlad?lar. Ama öncelikle ba?kanlar?m?za sorduk: Tür k Kanada Cem iyet i (TKC) bizler için neden önem li? Dernek çal??anlar? yeni üyeleri derne?imize kazand?rmaya çal???rken derne?in çal??malar?n? bilmeyenler, gençler ?Neden TKC?ye üye olay?m ki bana ne faydas? var? ? diye soruyorlar. Biz her ne kadar dilimiz döndü?ünce güçlü bir toplum olman?n önemini vurgulamaya çal??sak da sözlerimiz toplum liderlerinin söylemleri kadar anlaml? ve etkileyici olamayabiliyor her zaman. Derne?e uzun y?llar, kimi zaman gönüllü, kimi zaman koordinatör, kimi zaman da ba?kan olarak hizmet vermi?, bugün hala deste?ini üzerimizden çekmeyen Sn. Güler Aylar ?a göre ?birbirini seven, anlayan ho?görülü bir toplum?yaratmak her ?eyden

önemli. ?Martin Luther King?in de dedi?i gibi?I have a dream!?Yani bir hayalim var... benim hayalim birbirini seven ama her haliyle oldu?u gibi seven ho?görülü bir toplum olu?turmak. Nas?l ki çocu?umuz yanl?? yapt???nda onu sevmekten vaz geçmiyorsak, toplum üylerimizi de olduklar? gibi kabul edip sevmemiz gerekiyor. Toplum ancak böyle ho?görüyle olu?ur, güçlenir, büyür. Ama bu hayali kurmak yeterli de?il elbette. Bu hayali hayata geçirebilmek için ayn? zamanda bir de vizyon çal??mas? yapmak gerekiyor. Benim ba?kan oldu?um dönemde ekibimizin bence en önemli çal??mas?, dernek ad?na sa?lam bir vizyon ve görev tan?mlamas? yapmak oldu. Vizyon sa?lam olunca tüm organizasyonun yap?s? ve i?leyi?i de de?i?iyor ve geli?iyor, ayr?ca gereksiz enerji ve zaman kay?plar? da ya?anm?yor. Toplum olarak birbirimizi sevmeye ve anlamaya ihtiyac?m?z var bunun için de TKC çok önemli.

Bayram?m?z? Bunlara hepimiz kat?l?yoruz. Amaç e?lenmek falan da de?il asl?nda, amaç bir araya gelmek, dostlarla bulu?mak, Türk oldu?umuzu hissetmek. Ayr?ca cemiyet demek toplum olarak güçlü olmak ve ortak bir duru? sergileyebilmek demek. Bugün loby hareketleri yürütebilmek, Türk toplumunu yüceltecek kamuoyu yaratabilmek için cemiyete ihtiyac?m?z var. Say?n?z fazla, cemiyetiniz kuvvetliyse politikac?lar ??s?rmadan? önce iki defa dü?ünür. ??te o nedenle tekrar alt?n? çiziyorum, örgütsüz bir toplum dayak yeme?e mahkumdur!? As Turkish Canadian Society of Vancouver (TCS) we shared our projects with the ?ex-presidents? of our Society who worked hard to lead our Society to its position today: We listened to their comments and took note of their valuable advice and proposals. As the members of the board we all are aware of the importance of the ?social interaction?in order for us to reach out to all segments of our Society and to be able to communicate and explain our activities and our goals accurately. In these days, where there is an increased need for unity and solidarity, we would like to traditionalize these series of Reunion with Presidents meetings as a tradition with the leaders who served our society up to today. We tried to find answers for two major questions: ?Why TCS is important for us? And why we should become members? ? during this first meeting of our interview series and in this context we analysed and evaluated the work carried out by TCS. While we benefited and learned greatly from our guests ?vast experiences?, they also were able to listen to our presentations and they were informed about all the projects and the vision of TCS and and give us feedback. First of all, we asked them ?Why TCS is important for all of us?? As the board members while we are trying to enlist prospect members and especially the younger generation we usually have to answer this crucial question ?Why should we become a member of TCS, what is in it for us??

statement, all the structure and functioning of the organization changes and evolves in the positive sense and also reduces the redundant loss of time and energy. As a Society we need to understand and love each other and TCS is crucial to attain this. Yusuf Altintas, our beloved Professor underscores the importance of becoming a TCS member with a sharp and academic approach: ?An unorganized society is doomed to take a bashing!? Then he explains: ?Who do you spent most of your time with? Who do you see more ofthen: Turkish people! Besides the activities of TCS there is no other occasion for us to meet with other Turkish people, to share your culture. There is no other means for us to live our culture and to keep our culture alive. Is there any? NO! Of course those who lost their connection to their own culture and do not feel Turkish any more do not need TCS. But if they are willing not to lose it and if they want to keep strong ties with their country then for those TCS is a ?must-have?. It is very important for our kids especially for the second and third generations: it is inevitable to have a strong and sustainable community for our children not to lose their culture and language. Our TCS brings us together during special days and holidays such as our 30th of August Victory Day picnic, 29 October The Republic Day Dinner, 23 April Children?s Festival. We all attend to these events. Having fun is not our primary goal attending to these events; what we participate to meet with our friends to gather together as a community and to feel that we are Turkish. And besides all these, having TCS and belonging to this community means to have a strong stand in this country.

Although we try hard to emphasize the importance and benefits of a strong community, our words are not always as effective and meaningful as the messages of our society leaders, so we asked their opinions. Guler Aylar, who worked for the Community in various levels as a volunteer, as a coordinator and also as the President (she is still supporting our projects) believes that to create a complaisant society consisting of members loving, caring and understanding each other should be the paramount goal. ?As martin luther King Once told, I have a dream!.. My dream is to bring together a community who loves each other with all their flaws and mistakes. We do not stop loving our children when they make a mistake. Same is true for our society, we should love and accept each other as they are. A strong society can only be build and grow by compassion. But it is not enough to have a dream alone. In order to make that dream come true a serious ?Vision work? should be carried out. While I was the President of TCS I believe the most important accomplishment we realized was the fact that we meticulously worked on to create a vision statement for our Society and to define our terms of reference. We all need a strong TCS to be able to lobby and to take a stance against certain political decisions, and to uplift our members position in the society by moulding the public opinion about Turkish people and society. If you have enough crowds and if you can raise your voice appropriately the politicians would think twice before they ?bite you!? That is why I underscore it for the second time: An unorganized society is doomed to take a bashing!? Erol Karacabeyli on the other hand starts his words by reminding us a text he prepared and published in order to enroll new members to TCS during his own Presidency term. ? Erol Karacabeyli advised us we could use the same questions to make prospect members to understand the importance of TCS. As the board members since the day we came to work for TCS we tried to increase our membership numbers and to make it more attractive, more effective with more benefits. We want our events a meeting point for different groups in our society. We asked our leaders their opinion about this matter as well. ?One can not take without giving anything?, therefore you have to offer an added value and make membership more advantageous for members; you need to offer ?a carrot ? in layman's terms. If we can increase the level of assistance we offer we might win more members.? says Guler Ayral.

Yusuf Altintas agrees and shares a memory with us: Years ago I wrote an article about ?being a student in Canada. After that article I got tons of emails asking for help and advice. They were all graduates from different universities across Turkey. Still today there are lots of people contacting me and asking for help. If TCS can offer similar services and if the web page can offer more information, people can see the benefits and the membership will become more valuable. The volunteer jobs that TCS create are really important in Canada.

Besides that all the activities we offer are important in the development of the Society. I see that your team works really hard and well in this area. Folkloric Dance, music, schooling, theater and similar social activities are really the core activities to attract more people. Keep working hard on these. Erol Karacabeyli warn us about another important topic: Communication is crucial. For example you put an effort to reach out to us to explain your work and today we are here to help and support you. Keep this communication channel open all the time. Explain yourself and work continuously and inform the society members. I truly appreciate your work in our Toplum Magazine. It is really improved and the last issue is really a neat work. Well done! Reach out to people who can help you within the Society. Listen to criticism and comments. Of course you can not make everyone happy. But now you are strong and dynamic team do never lose this? Erol Karacabeyli finishes his words with a nice slogan that will stay with us for a long time : ?Less is more?. If you want your messages to reach the right targeted people they have to be concise. Orient your energy towards worthwhile activities... Yusuf Altintas interferes for a quick reminder: Our Society is the less problematic one among other Turkish Societies in Canada and it always sets the example. We

obtained this quality because we never discriminated against any ethnicity, language, religion or political inclination we remained neutral. Keep following the same path. Keep our TCS safe from those schisms. Our interview went by with the speed of light or we felt like it because we were conversing with our experienced and knowledgeable leaders. As the board members we highly benefited from this meeting and we learned a lot. During these difficult times our country is going through we need to stand strong together as a Society. And Cumhuriyet Bayrami Dinner is the most important day and the best occasion for us to show solidarity, to protect the values we believe. Before closing the meeting we filmed our leaders? Cumhuriyet Bayrami Dinner messages where they invited all members to join us on the 22nd October. We got the support of our previous presidents, yet we need your support to develop TCS, and to realize important and meaningful projects that our community needs. Turkish School, Turkish Tunes, Folkloric dance team, library, languages courses -Turkish and English- , advisory assistance to new students, business club and so many more projects are ahead of us. So please join us and support us and share your opinions with us in these efforts to bring our ?Society?together, to make it stronger and more unified. We might be a small community but we have big targets and dreams... Please do not forget: "TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER? ?

re you aware of the fact that income taxes and probate fees in common-law jurisdictions could reduce the value of your estate by up to half? While Canada does not impose death or inheritance taxes, generally your capital assets are considered to have been sold upon your death unless you leave these assets to a surviving spouse or common-law partner on a ?rollover basis?. The income tax implications of this deemed disposition can be severe, and depending on your beneficiaries and the province in which you reside, probate fees in common-law jurisdictions may be assessed on your estate to further erode your legacy. Life insurance, often viewed solely to provide for dependants in the event of an untimely death, can provide an effective way of preserving your wealth for the benefit of your heirs. Just what is t axable upon deat h? Virtually any asset upon which taxes have been deferred will be subject to tax upon your death. This includes the full value of your registered retirement savings plan (RRSP) or registered retirement income fund (RRIF), as well as half of the gain on any non-registered assets, including recreational property, stock and other investments. The tax implications on these deemed dispositions can be significant. For example, if the cottage you purchased 30 years ago for $50,000 has appreciated in value to $250,000, upon your death, your estate could face a tax bill of approximately $45,000 on the cottage alone. An RRSP or RRIF containing $300,000 of assets would also be taken entirely into income. The result? It too could be cut almost in half once it ?s taxed. In common-law jurisdictions with relatively high probate fees, such as Ontario, Nova Scotia and British Columbia, these fees can further reduce your estate by thousands of dollars. Delaying the inevitable Canadians can bequeath capital property directly to their spouse or common-law partner with no immediate tax consequences. ?rolled over ?to a surviving spouse or common-law partner and remain sheltered from tax. As a result, many tax liabilities can be deferred until the death of the surviving spouse or common-law partner.well as your short and long-term objectives. Unless the surviving spouse or common-law partner enters into a new relationship, the tax deferral ordinarily comes to an end upon his or her death. In these circumstances, estate assets may have to be sold in order to pay long-deferred taxes. However, it is important to know that subject to certain conditions, farm property and fishing property can be transferred on a tax-deferred basis from parent to child or grandchild prior to or at the time of death. While selling assets to pay taxes is an option, it may not always be an ideal solution. Unfavourable market conditions could force the sale of assets at depressed prices, limiting the proceeds available to your estate. Transaction costs incurred upon these sales could further reduce these proceeds. Finally, some assets cannot easily be sold. For example, it is not feasible to sell off only a portion of your cottage to cover taxes. This could put someone in the

unenviable position of having to raise large amounts of cash if they hope to retain the property they inherit. Anot her opt ion Rather than selling assets or borrowing cash to pay fees and taxes, consider purchasing a joint second-to-die life insurance policy to preserve your estate. These policies insure the lives of both spouses, with proceeds payable upon the death of the surviving spouse. This type of insurance is much less expensive than insuring only one spouse. The proceeds can then be applied to cover your estate?s tax liabilities and other debts, thereby preserving your legacy for the benefit of your heirs. Another option is to designate a charity or charities as the beneficiary(ies) of a life insurance policy having proceeds on death equal to the taxable income that would be incurred by your estate. The life insurance proceeds would be a gift by the deceased policy owner. The resulting charitable tax credit would offset the income tax liability.

My introduction to Parkgate Community Centre (http://www.myparkgate.com), located in the east of Seymour area of North Vancouver, was in the late 1990s and through its former Executive Director whom I met during a tour of the designated childcare area soon to be built within the Centre. I was interested to explore the programming as my daughter was soon to be a toddler and, therefore, attended the well-informed tour with a hard hat because certain parts of the Centre were designated as ?under-construction.? Based on the proximity to our home, the Centre became an active part of our lives with its unique and family-oriented programs and services, including baby clinics, playgroups, childcare services, fitness and social programming, as well as sports and educational camps, birthday parties and community engagement events. The Centre is unique in its ability to incorporate diverse interests of family members in different age brackets and, therefore has been supported by dedicated group of clients and community volunteers. It is indeed an active hub for educational, social and physical activities, where inter-generational connections are common among locals who frequently meet-up to interact. The Centre operates in accordance with the District of North Vancouver ?s mandate and in partnership with the North Vancouver Recreation and Culture (NVRC) and the registered non-profit charitable Parkgate Community Resources Society (PCSS). The Society has been in operation since the early 1980s and has provided community-based programming and services to children, youth, families and seniors at its current location since the late 1990s. Its community governance model, widely and positively recognized, was awarded with the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Community Contribution Award in 2015. Through years of positive experiences and a sense of belonging - a reflection of this community - I started my volunteering journey with the PCSS Board in the early 2010s, actively serving as a member of the Strategic Planning and Community Engagement Committees. Early in 2016, as the Chair of the Sustainability and Leadership Committee, an idea to initiate a youth leadership and empowerment speaker series, in conjunction with a mentorship program, came into fruition. The Youth Speaker Series (YSS), which will focus on empowering local youth in attaining their personal and career goals to reach their full potential, thus was born. The Series adheres with PCSS?s Strategic Plan of connecting community members and providing services to serve their needs. In addition, it embodies the Youth Services vision of supporting: -

Connections for positive life changes Inclusion of all race and socio-economic backgrounds Leadership and skills development Introduction to real-life competencies

The first YSS event is scheduled to take place on October 5, 2016 at the Centre, with two additional events to follow on November 2nd, 2016 and January 18th, 2017. The themes are success stories in branding/business, music industry and social media, respectively. The goal is to invite two speakers per event - who have attained success in their chosen fields and can appeal to our youth demographic - and create a platform where engaging, empowering participatory conversations are initiated between successful local entrepreneurs and our youth. Senem ÖZ Childrens?s Club Director Since we?ve been elected at Turkish Canadian Society, we have been working hard in establishing a Turkish language school for children of Turkish-Canadian families to help preserve their mother tongue and culture in a city where their population is significantly small. Our biggest hurdle was to find a classroom for students, thus creating a budget for its required expenses turned into another challenge. After long and tiring negotiations with the Vancouver School Board, we had managed to find a location at Elsie Roy Elementary School for the class to be taught by a volunteer teacher and valued community member, Ms. Özden Var??l?. On the 11th of September 2016, a placement exam took place along with an oral placement test where Ms. Var??l? explained the program objectives, introduced study methods, and also touched on how parents should work with their kids during the week. At first there were fourteen students enrolled to attend the class, but unfortunately, only six of them actually participated which resulted in the cancelation of our contract due to our inability to run the classes with only six students actively present. That being said, we regret to announce that the classes scheduled for

October will no longer take place at Elsie Roy Elementary, but fortunately enough, we?ve managed to move them to a new location at the Roundhouse Community Centre. Ironically, in the past we received countless e-mails and phone calls from Turkish parents expressing their difficulties in teaching their children Turkish hence the need for a Turkish school. Based on that demand, we, at Turkish Canadian Society, have finally opened one and our aim is to introduce different levels of Turkish language/culture classes but we need the community?s support, especially that from parents. We are aware that the contemporary location of our classes might be far for some families to commute to. But in order for this project to succeed at reaching a higher number of students and opening more locations across the mainland, we ask that parents make an extra effort in commuting their children to our established location for now. After all, they are our future! We would like to take this opportunity to formally thank the Ministry of National Education for all of the supplies they have provided for our students and also Mr. Gürcan Akgül who brought over several dictionaries and story books from Turkey and donated them on behalf of our students and parents. We also thank the devoted parents who have contributed to the development of this project by following along and enrolling their children at the new location of Vancouver ?s first Turkish school.

On September 11th, Sunday we organized a holiday greetings exchange ceremony, to celebrate Eid al-Adha in Roundhouse Community Center. It was a great occasion to meet the Society leaders and the elderly and we enjoyed the heartwarming celebration and kissed the hands of our elderly in the traditional way, while also enjoying the Turkish Coffee and the baklavas offered. Istanbul the Band or in our words gave amazing concert at Simon Fraser University?s Highland Pub on the 7th October 2016 and they mesmerized us with their nostalgic songs from the 60?s to this day. The band members practiced long evening hours to be able to offer us new songs and a breathtaking musical feast; they also organized all the technical preparations and sound system. While enjoying the delicious meals of Lara Cuisine, our guests enjoyed this joyful event and we all danced and sang together. So we would like to thank all the talented members of the band for this musical feast!

Our valuable member who supported and contributed to our Society Mr. Fikret Akkurt has received the Exemplary Veteran Citizen award during a ceremony organized by TURYAK September 30th and October 1st 2016. We would like to congratulate our honorable president who continuously worked and supported TCS since the day it was established. During the 7th ANCA Autism Festival held in Vancouver, 22 young talents from Turkey were nominated this year. We as Turkish Canadian Society, supported our citizens participating in this important Festival. Ayberk Aksu, Beril Zorlu, Fehmihan Kanbero?lu, Y?ld?r?m Beyaz?t Akar, Sevgi Çerçi, Samed Selek and Bu?ra Çank?r were announced as award recipients. Only three award winners were able to participate in the award ceremony with their families. Our Consul General of Vancouver received the awards of the nominees who were absent on their behalf.

Our Folklore Dance Team, in order to fulfill the principle of contributing to the multiculturalism of Kanada as it is mentioned in the Statute of TCS, has been performing and introducing Turkish Folkloric Dances at various occasions and events for Turkish and Canadian societies. Eurofest, Seattle Turkfest, Greekfest, Canada Day Parade, Multicultural Day, Bosnian festival are among the few events we have participated. There are many other occasions and events we have been invited to but could not participate. The scarcity of performers willing to take part in our team is the main reason why we do not accept many invitations is the scarcity of participants from our society in Vancouver. The lack of interest of the society members is really taking away the motivation of our team members and instructors and causes an overload of work for the existing team members. We can teach our youth that they are part of a rich culture not only by words but by enabling them to take part in our folk dances and by letting them learn our folk songs . This participation and awareness of their own culture will make our youth become more successful people in Canada. It is obvious that people who know and are in peace with their own culture and history will contribute more to the Canadian cultural mosaic and social life. Therefore we expect the participation of our society members to our Turkish Folklore Dance team as a sportive and cultural activity more than ever. sayfa / page 26

They?ve kept a continuous growth rate and maintained their quality of clothing event though the industry?s goalposts are constantly changing and creating more challenges. Thousands of businessmen and investors try that but only a handful of them actually succeed. I relate his success to his business experience in Turkey and his Old Bazaar experience. I believe that the most important factor in his successful business career is the way he chooses his teammates. He selects the right people and he establishes his team meticulously which he then does his best for them to work in harmony.? As the conversation progressed, we learned that at Mavi Jeans they apply a special method known as the Adizes Theory (developed by Ichak Adizes) which extends and organizes the life cycle of businesses. ?Adizes is a management method which we highly put faith in at Mavi Jeans. In every company there are team members with different characteristics and talents. I believe taking into consideration these differences and positioning each team member to the right job is crucial for success. For example, during the first years when we hired someone for the client services department, we tried to choose people who we would later on employ in our sales department. But as the years went by, we came to realize that that was a mistake. People you hire for client services department should be people who make no mistakes, totally obey the rules, and think in black-or-white. Whereas the employees you hire for the sales department should be sales-oriented, and also aggressive sellers who think of nothing else but selling the brand. Today we try to establish a harmonious team who complement each other; we try to employ the right people in the right

positions. Another important point is that our business should be run by a young and dynamic team. That ?s why we hire young people and we grow with them.? Mesut Orhan joined the conversation and added, ?Mr Durmaz is the best boss type; he has a friendly attitude and he respects everyone in his team. Also, he never lets us feel that he is the boss and we always feel his presence among us. We respect him for that.?

The jeans are made of a special stretch denim that enables those who wear them to enjoy exceptional freedom of movement. They also explained that Mavi Jeans is celebrating its 25th anniversary by launching the Indigo Move series? new denim that will transform the denim market.

?I started singing when I was very young. For the last two years, I started to want to do something with music. I have been singing with Creativ Music Center for the past four years and I have been enjoying it a lot. I have been working on my own songs and making covers. I enjoy listening to singers like Lana Del Ray, Rihanna, Troy Sivah, Amy Winehouse and many more. This year I will be singing at my school?s R&B band and it is really fun to be part of it. Recently, I have attended an online music competition with Unsigned Only where I sang a cover of Adele?s One and Only and I won the votes. Thank you all so much for your votes. I also released my new original song Kick it in the Summer on iTunes which I encourage you all to download. When I was in Turkey, I also worked in studio with DJ Ogün Dalka to record one of his dance songs. I will keep working hard to follow my dreams and make my own music to share with you.?

The Lor d of Fish: Engin Dalyanc? Senem ÖZ Did you know that Bodrum?s multicolored fish that are living on glass are immigrating to Canada together with great master Engin Dalyanc?? Nope, you have not heard wrong? famous artist who promoted Bodrum to the world with his glass fish and marine figures, that have been applied using various materials, has now settled in Vancouver. The Lord of the Fish will bring the Mediterranean and Aegean breeze to Canada through his workshops at Emily Carr University. As Toplum Magazine, we visited the artist during his first exhibition at the Burnaby Art Festival which took place by Deer Lake. Over there, I found myself in a very familiar world full of multicolored fish; it took me back to my days of scuba diving as an Instructor which I remember with a great longing. I also felt as if I was back in the cobalt blue waters of Bodrum once again. Plates, paintings, accessories, ornaments, all of them painted with fish figures that I recognize and have seen underwater. Being at Dalyanc??s stand in the festival area brought me back the breezes of the Aegean Sea, of Bodrum, and of my homeland. The artist who expresses his inner world with fish, sea and colors, has inherited his passion from his family. He was born in Çorlu, a district in Istanbul. Besides his father who was a teacher, most of his family members were fishermen. His grandfather, Abdullah Bey, was the famous fisherman of Büyükçekmece, hence their family name Dalyanc?, meaning a person who works at or owns a fish trap. Engin lost his fishermen relatives, including -Quote his beloved grandfather, on aAuthor stormy day at sea where they were all killed by a natural disaster. Although he never was a fisherman himself and never sailed to the sea for a living, he wanted to immortalize and commemorate his grandfather and relatives by painting multicolored fish on each piece of artwork he creates and introduces into the world. Another influential figure in Engin Dalyanc??s life is a school teacher who had a great passion for painting. Engin admits that his school teacher made him love colors and the art of painting. But his journey into the world of colors was not an easy ride; first he was sent to the engine department of an art school under the advice of his father. He even tried to work for a short while in a factory but he could not continue. In 1983 he followed his passion and enrolled into the Painting Department of Gazi Education Faculty. During his education, he never missed one class of his painting lessons although he neglected all other subjects. As he describes it, he ?slept and lived? in the art workshop of his school. Later on he became an assistant for the famous professor and artist Adnan Turan?. During his military service, Dalyanc?was sent to I?d?r (a city in eastern Turkey). There, during his free time, he produced leather bags, belts and accessories and sold them in Do?u Beyaz?t.

Jef f er y?nin Yolculu?u / Adem Can Vaner Senem ÖZ During the same time period, he observed how the locals of the region poured their feelings, dreams and life stories into weaving their carpets and kilims. That was when Engin learned how to make and use root dyes which he later on used in his art. After completing his military service, he went to Bodrum where he lived his life at full speed, enjoying all of the exciting lifestyle Bodrum offers. As time went by, his passion for art and for painting urged him into becoming a street artist, painting Bodrum castles and houses, as well as boats and the sea he observed in his daily life. But later on, the multicolored fish started to appear on his canvass? eventually becoming the backbone of his artwork today. ?My passion for naive fish figures came about when I was 25 years old,? explains Dalyanc?. ?Fish symbolizes the freedom in life and being without borders; a cobalt-blue, free world for me? ? Dalyanc? also explained that later on he went to Kütahya (a landlocked city between the west and central parts of Anatolia) to learn ceramic art and worked in a workshop there for four years where he produced and marketed his ceramics. In fact, he combined all the different art techniques, experiences, education and hard work he encountered during different periods in his life. This harmonious combination made him the exceptional artist he is today and positioned him as the Lord of Fish. Today, Dalyanc? applies root dies into his glass work, uses the fusion technique (fused glass that has been heat-processed in a kiln at a range of high temperatures), and uses various materials to create his art. He?s also created a cobalt blue world for himself and his fish. We asked him about his artistic journey in Canada and his future projects and he replied, ?I am new here and now I try to observe and understand Canadians, to learn about their perspectives, likes and dislikes, about how they express their feelings, and how they perceive the world around them. When I finish this observation phase my fish will adapt themselves to the waters here and will come back to me. So I will continue creating plates and all the other accessories but at the same time, since I have come to Vancouver, I have started to produce glass tables, sinks, and decorative wall panels. In other words, I have started working on functional items Canadians can use and enjoy in their daily lives. I have observed that the housing sector is quite developed here. Inspired by this, I?ve decided to widen my product line. Of course it ?s only a new beginning? production and creation alone does not sell; I need to promote my art and products to architects, interior designers and so on, therefore I still have a long road ahead of me.? An honest and compassionate tale about a fantastic, personal journey dealing with the concepts of finding inner strength and true self. The debut novel The Journey of Jeffery establishes Adem Can Vaner as a talented and original young novelist who has a great passion for writing and creating an imaginary world to depict his feelings, experiences, and to spread his message of love and compassion. We visited A. C. Vaner at his home for an interview on a sunny, summer day in August. The moment we set foot in his apartment, we were greeted by a delicious smell and a chorus of colorful, tweeting birds as if they were preforming a welcome song. Later on we counted them and discovered that A. C. Vaner had eighteen of them! His apartment was quite spacious and the walls were all painted in different colors. There were also many colorful objects all around the place. When he noticed that we were curious about the colorful walls, he explained: ?I painted them myself. Colors are very important in my life.? Indeed, colors do a have special place in his world and in his work. After inquiring about the delicious smell, A. C. Vaner proudly announced that he had prepared karn?yar?k, and his special k?s?r for us and also spoke of how much he admires Turkish cuisine. Besides his literary talents, we right away knew for sure that A. C. Vaner is a great cook. This was then confirmed once A. C. Vaner served the amazingly cooked meals after he had answered our questions regarding his literary and professional journey. Another detail that caught our attention at first sight was the Turkish flag and a portrait of Atatürk hanging on his wall. Although he is Canadian-born and English his first language, A. C. Vaner is a great admirer of Atatürk and loves preserving his

heritage by learning Turkish and learning more about the old country. We also got to learn about his special talent. Besides his literary journey in his professional life, A. C. Vaner is also a talented medium. We asked him to tell us about his spiritual side and his profession as his literary work is highly influenced by it. He explained that as a child he witnessed his mother ?s predictions happening in a matter of time after she?d read Turkish coffee cups (fincan), an old, Ottoman tradition similar to tea leaves. Although he was a little scared of this phenomenon back then, several years later he discovered that he himself had the same talent and took on the tradition of Turkish coffee readings (kahve fal?). Through that and the influence of the Spiritualist Church, A. C. Vaner became exceptional at the art of mediumship and also various forms of divination readings such as crystal ball and tarot cards. Although he was trained in becoming and ESL teacher, and has worked in various fields such as DJ mixing, A. C. Vaner found his true path in the realm of metaphysics. A. C. Vaner also has an individual interest in words. Not only is he interested in their sounds, phonetics, and their etymology/evolution, he also tells us that he is interested in the energy they behold. ?Each word carries an energy and the same is true for colors? says A. C. Vaner. When we asked about his favorite authors he spoke of Dr. Werner Gitt, Roald Dahl, Lloyd Alexander, Petra Hoffman, and Doreen Virtue. Writing for A. C. Vaner is a way of expressing love. In his novel he clearly states this openly through one of the characters: "Only love can guide, and only love can teach; only love can move us along, and only love can provide us with precision and give us the strength to accept one another. Love is an endless cycle that brings no other than liberation. It brings us liberation from our evil deeds and our selfish needs." In The Journey of Jeffery readers find spiritual, and theological concepts depicted through A. C. Vaner ?s efficient usage of symbolism and also discover hidden messages as they read between the lines. Authentic in both fantasy and symbology, The Journey of Jeffery is the tale of a personal transformation. A. C. Vaner takes us through this symbolic journey where we witness our protagonist, Jeffrey, discover his own truth through encountering exotic settings and beings. Through his encounters among various characters where every chapter has its own leading color, he questions himself, life and

others, trying to find answers. The various symbolic concepts reveal and depict different themes and layers of the story. The rich language and precise imagery create a lush piece of work? a journey where concision and details are melded to reflect the young author ?s imaginary world. The book is full of newly coined words and concepts, for instance, the crocksvenbulb; it is a circular symbol that appears in different colors, used to illustrate his characters? ideologies, philosophies, perspectives, opinions and paradigms in respect to life. There are also fairycorns, poetic merman, trinmpts, and many more. A. C. Vaner dreams of having his book translated into Turkish one day where the characters are told about using Turkish names. For instance, Jeffery would become Co?kun and Lake Morgan would become Selahattin Hoca. Though the novel does already contain subliminal, Turkish elements in a secondary character ?s name and in the description of his mother ?s favorite dessert, revani, through the almond cake on Planet Ice Mallow. The Journey of Jeffery is a very compelling page-turner right from the opening chapter where our protagonist Jeffery is introduced, right through the final chapter where he finds his sense of self. Indeed, A. C. Vaner envelops his readers through a journey in this fantastic, personal and even emotional -Quote novel filledAuthor with great characters that will stay with them for a long time, proving that in the end the truth can be far more complicated and interesting than our perception. Are you talking about your current health status or your long term health? We need to talk about our long term health all the time! Our long term health depends on what we do, what we drink, eat and think today. Our health changes with every breath we take. When we send wrong messages to our cells today, our long term health starts to deteriorate. When we send the right messages to our cells, our long term health starts to improve. The problem is that our cells do not communicate with us immediately when we give them the wrong messages. Or at least we don?t get those subtle messages. They may not tell us ?please stop doing that ? until it is too late. Our future so heavily depends on what we do or think right now! Yet our cells are seemingly so quiet and we only hear their signalling when it is too late. Life that we live in harmony with nature impacts our long term health positively. Let ?s look at the lifestyle of the cave men! 1) Diet: They consumed pure water coming from the mountain. They immediately consumed the raw and organic fruits and vegetables. Minerals, vitamins and antioxidants that repaired and protected their cells came from these sources. 2) Daily sport: They were either running after an animal to hunt or chased by an animal! Also constantly looking for their food every day. In this process, they were constantly moving.

How is our lifestyle today? There are very few tribes in our world that live like cave men today. However, a large segment of the population of our world lives in cities that suffer from pollution, economic depression, family and social problems, civil or international wars, environmental pollution, etc. The food that we eat is not organic and at least 5 days old. We bring it home and kill some of the essential minerals and vitamins in it by cooking. We drink acidic tap water that also includes chemicals like chlorine and fluoride. Or we buy water in plastic bottles. When our thoughts are negative, then chemicals are released from our cells that harm our long term health. When our thoughts are positive then chemicals are released to repair our cells. When our cells get the wrong messages, they are unable to renew themselves properly. This leads to the development of degenerative diseases in the long run. Whatever we do at this moment, will either add to our long term health or will steal from it. We are now in the Information and Technology Age. In the old days, we used to go to a local book store or to the public library by walking a couple of blocks or by taking the bus to get the information. Today, we are bombarded by information coming to our cell phones every second, even if we don?t want them. We reach the same amount of information in one day that a cave man used to reach in his lifetime. However, our brain cells are the same as the cave men?s brain cells were. This information overload creates lots of stress in our body. So, what should we do? As Darren Hardy, advisor and former publisher of SUCCESS Magazine, says ?control what is controllable?. We should not spend our precious time on the things that we can not control Here is a list of some things that we can control:

3) Positive thinking: There was no media or TV! The usage of language was very limited, therefore negative talk did not even exist.

1) Filter the tap water to remove the harmful chemicals and add organic lemon juice to make it alkaline. A healthy human body is slightly alkaline. Drink lots of water.

4) Managing emotions: Since there were no terms and conditions established in the society, there was no obligation of meeting the expectations of the society. There were no obligations to go to school, get the certification and find a job that they didn?t like. There was no religion! No shame! They didn?t care what others thought about them.

2) Eat local organic fruits and vegetables as much as possible.

5) Fullfillment of their lives: They didn?t need to earn money, budget, buy cars and houses. They were really enjoying every season, nature, the rain, the sun every day. They celebrated their lives every evening because they had survived one more day.

5) Use non toxic cleaning materials at home.

3) Decrease the consumption of animal products. 4) Use high quality nutritional supplements such as multivitamins, Vitamin D and Fish Oil, etc. with your meals daily.

6) Spend time in nature. 7) Spend very limited time on social media, reading newspaper and watching TV.

9) Daily sport: You can do a 15-minute exercise to develop your core muscles at your home after you drink a glass of water with lemon juice every morning. You must find the time to do this. 10) Be with friends who are positive, supportive and giving you an uplifting energy boost every day. 11) Find time for rest and selfcare. Sleep quality is very important since our cells are repaired and renewed while we are sleeping. 12) Personal Development: We all have unique gifts and talents to offer the world. Spend time to discover them and get help from experts in this field. Earn your money from your own talents and unique contributions. This way, you don?t feel that you are working for money. The best example that I can give in this area is myself. I was an unhappy banker for 24 years until four years ago when I discovered Guler who inspires others to live a healthier and happier life. How did this happen? First of all, I was brave enough to stop my career in banking. Some of my friends supported me while

Distinguished Turkish Citizens, It is a distinct pleasure to once again address you through the Toplum Magazine of the Turkish Canadian Society of Vancouver. On the outset, I would like to extend my congratulations to you on the occasion of the recent Eid Celebration. Availing myself of this opportunity, I would like to share my thoughts on the failed coup attempt which took place on 15 July 2016 and the terrorist organization that masterminded the heinous attempt.246 Turkish citizens were martyred and several Turkish citizens were wounded during the coup attempt. I offer my sympathies to the relatives of those martyrs and speedy recovery to those wounded. Turkish nation demonstrated a decisive and brave attitude against the coup plotters who targeted the Turkish Democracy, Turkish Grand National Assembly, Turkish President and the entire cadre of Turkish politicians. In essence, it was the democratic choice of the Turkish nation which was targeted. Majority of the Turkish Armed Forces and the Security establishment also stood against the coup attempt. In doing so, they have shown the strength of the institutional framework of the Turkish Democracy. Every Turkish politician chose to work at the Grand National Assembly under the death threat and openly shared his or her reaction with the public. Regrettably, members of the terrorist FETÖ attacked the Grand National Assembly of Turkey with the deadliest weapons and damaged this most important historical institution of modern Turkey.

Dear members of the Turkish Community, FETÖ has a similar organization structure abroad as well as the one in Turkey. This extremely disciplined terror network is aiming to reach out to the politicians, media, economy and religious circles. In their reach-out efforts, they are utilizing the themes such as ?inter-religious or inter-cultural dialogue?, ?multiculturalism? or ?mild Islam?. Such themes are carefully selected with the only aim of influencing the Western public opinions. Turkish history does not deserve to be simply represented with these themes and the Turkish nation never deserves to be represented by such terrorist networks. With this understanding, I sincerely believe that our non-governmental organizations and community associations should be more active in order to prevent FETÖ members from abusing the name of our country, our culture and history. Turkish Government is doing its part and continues to identify members of FETÖ to bring them to justice. I am confident that the Turkish people living abroad will join this effort to eliminate FETÖ from the Turkish communities. I present my sincere regards. FETÖ used 246 armed vehicles, 74 armors, 37 helicopters, 24 F-16s and 11 aircrafts to kill the civilians who were demonstrating against the coup attempt on the streets. Having placed its members in some of the most sensitive positions within the state structures during the last tens of years, at the night of the July 15th, FETÖ has tried to strike a ?golden shot ? with the ultimate aim of taking control of the government and hand it over to a person who presents himself as a spiritual leader and man of religion. I sincerely believe that the failure of this coup attempt is a big chance for the future of the Republic of Turkey.

30t h August Picnic Revisit ed Dor uk Tosun (Age 12) 30 August Picnic was really a fun event. We celebrate 30 August ?Victory Day? to commemorate the great victory of the Turkish Army at the final battle in Dumlupinar ending the Turkish Independence War on the same day in 1922. When I lived in Turkey, we celebrated the Victory day by carrying Turkish flags and we used to participate to the torchlight processions on the streets. In Vancouver this important holiday is celebrated by the traditional 30th August Victory Day Picnic organized by the Turkish Canadian Society. This year ?s picnic was the second picnic I have attended. We woke up early that day, I must confess that I might be up a little later than my mom and dad. We prepared everything together: My parents gathered the chairs etc. while I prepared my soccer ball, frisbee and all the other toys I could carry. Usually my parents get angry when I carry a big load of toys, so I secretly hid some of them under the bags secretly without telling them. As usual our preparations took a little while so we were not able to go to the picnic as early as we planned. On our way to the picnic area a heavy rain started to pour down, but it was over when we reached there and the sun started to shine. The first thing that caught my attention was the food stand. Volunteers were working there and serving food. The spinach pastries were excellent. I have started to play soccer with my friends right away. Unfortunately, the soccer tournament was over when we reached the park, so I was not able to participate. That ?s why someone else has won the Trophy which was given to the winning team with a ceremony. After the ceremony the rain started again and everybody took shelter under the trees, so I started playing some board games with my friends. Then under a huge tree participants started a very exciting backgammon tournament. It was really fun watching grown ups playing backgammon seated at tables side by side at the same time. Some of the games were really competitive. As we have played soccer for long time, me and my friends were hungry so we ate more spinach pastry. While we were enjoying the food the rain stopped again and again there was sun behind the clouds. In fact, during the picnic we kept putting on and taking off our coats continuously it was a really strange weather.

Sonunda yava? yava? ak?amüstü oldu. Herkes da??lmaya ba?lam??t?. Biz de tüm iskemlelerimizi toplay?p, arabam?za yükledik. Herkes birbirine veda ediyor, yine görü?elim diyordu.

Time flied fast and it was late afternoon. Slowly people started to leave. We collected all of our chairs and picnic material and put them back to our car. Everybody was saying goodbye to each other and expressed their wish to gather again for another event like this one.

Bu tarz piknikleri çok seviyorum. Herkes mutlu oluyor, gülümsüyor, sohbet ediyor, oyun oynuyor, ho?ça vakit geçiriyor. Ke?ke daha çok bir araya gelsek, hep birlikte kutlamalar yapsak....

I truly love attending these picnics. It makes everyone happy, everyone smiles, chats with friends, play games and enjoy their time. I wish we could gather more often and celebrate more events like this... sayfa / page 45

Back t o school Def ne Su Ta?l?çay Back to school can be really stressful. Especially for new high school students like me. In my back to school experience means a new school, new people, new teachers and a new environment that I have to get used to. Even though back to school looks a bit scary, there are some great tips to succeed. I think the greatest tip for back to school for every student is to always be organized. Make sure you have all school supplies you need to work and learn in class. Having a personal calendar is another key to follow your projects and assignments in a timely manner. The first week/month of school was really hard and confusing for me, so I tried hard to make sure I learn what and where all my classes are. In between each class I have a few minutes to get to my locker and to my next class. If you are not in high school, you have plenty of time to get ready for the next class and have all your assignments, homework ready. You need to study regularly to be ready for all your exams without stressing out the day before. Make sure to always have a healthy diet during the school year. Try to stay away from junk food like chocolate, chips, cookies and unhealthy drinks that they serve in the cafeteria. Have a healthy breakfast in the morning which includes proteins, fruits/vegetables, small amount of bread and dairy.

RI O Olym pics, 2016 By Ege Ta?l?çay The 2016 Rio Olympics finished on September 7. it was very exciting. Karate entered olympics as a new sport this year. Karate athletes will compete in 2020 olympics. As a purple belt karate athlete, I will work very hard to be one of those athletes and will be competing in the Junior Olympics. Canada did quite good in 2016 Olympics and reached to 20th place overall. Canada got 15 bronze medals 3 silver medals and 4 gold medals. Penny Oliksiak a 16 year old Canadian swimmer won one gold medal one silver medal and two bronze medals it ?s shocking because she is so young. Many surprising things happened in this olympics, for example Russia was banned from competing because of the doping issues. Later, Russian hackers revealed some other European and American athletes laboratory results to show the others have doping too. all times Worlds best swimmer Micheal Phelps won 5 gold medals and 1 silver medal.
