However, we do have a dedicated community of mission-driven employees, loyal supporters who show up no matter the ask, and the foundational stamina to be there for Montana for another century to come.

It’s been several years since we’ve published our mag azine and we are humbled and elated to share with you all what we’ve been up to. First and foremost, if you’re reading this, it’s because you’ve given to Shodair in one way or another in the last five years, and for that we humbly say thank you. On behalf of the Board of Directors, the patients we serve and their families, and our incredible employees, a sincere thanks as we continue to meet our century-old mission and bring help, healing, and hope to Montana youth. We know your decision to continue supporting Shodair, especially during such uncertain times, is not taken light ly and we do not take it for granted. The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on so many areas of our lives. One area I believe was impact ed a great deal is the educational systems. And, likely to the detriment of today’s teenagers, and we don’t yet really know all the lasting effects. What we do know is there is an increased intensity of those who struggle with social anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation. That’s evident in the high acuity of the patients needing care in our inpatient units and the urgency of those seen in our outpatient clinics. It’s been hard on us adults too. It has made the economy volatile. It has further divided political party lines. And it’s taken a huge toll on the well-being of all of Theus.silver lining is Shodair is all about staying the course and being a source of hope in times of uncertainty and darkness and today’s no different. Shodair started caring for Montanans 126 years ago when the hospital was an orphanage. Later it was a polio hospital, and for the last 50 years, has provided mental health and genetic services to families across Montana regardless of their ability to pay. We continue to look for ways to meet the needs for mental health services at a time when the need is at an all-time high. Montana consistently continues to hold one of the highest suicide rates in the country, regardless of the age, and last year, the number of youth who died by suicide in this state more than doubled. I can tell you with complete confidence Shodair is working intentionally to respond and meet the needs across this great state. We know now more than ever, there is an urgent need for accessible and affordable services. We are working to address this by keeping our mission the guide to all decisions: To heal, help and inspire hope. It’s with this in mind that we opened three outpatient clinics and embarked on a campus improve ment plan in Helena. About five years ago, we set forth to build a state-ofthe-art psychiatric hospital to replace the one that was once a bowling alley and bar. This project also includes construction of a med ical office building that will become home to the genetics services, giving them a stronger identity. We are committed to this effort because it’s what the families we serve deserve. This is coming to life as we see the project taking shape on its 28-acres in Helena.

I believe this is a hospital Montana kids deserve, and it couldn’t happen without the commitments of everyone involved.Shodair has a solid reputation to be good financial stewards to the dollars donated by our donors. We con tinually strive to provide what is best for the patients and families we serve. Shodair is one of the first and remains one of the only hospitals certified in trauma-informed care. We have cared for thousands of children and adoles cents from 52 of our 56 counties. Our current construction project will allow us to continue our work in a space that is equal to the quality and creativity of our care.

The new hospital is expected to be complet ed by the end of the year. Designed by providers, patients, and families who worked with leadership, architects, and designers, it will provide patients individual rooms and restrooms; flexible spaces adaptable for a myriad of uses, a spiritual space with a smudge room, a pool, state-of-the-art security as well as safety, and quiet rooms with windows.

This ensures a stronger independent identity for those services and more importantly, easier access for patients.

The need for Shodair’s services continues to grow.

The current hospital in Helena, which was once a bowling alley, has been retrofitted time after time and has reached the end of its service life. The conversation to build a new hospital began about five years ago with doctors, patients and families, administration, board members, architects, and other direct-care staff. The decision was made right at the birth of the pandemic to move forward because the need wasn’t going away. What has a price tag of $66 million would cost $90 million today. Shodair secured bonds for $52 million and has reached more than $9 million of its $14 million fundraising goal thanks to business, individuals, trusts, and generous supporters statewide. Shodair is part of Montana’s fabric and continues a tireless dedication to residents that live here: 99 percent of patients are from Montana.Thenew 134,000 square foot hospital is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The three-story building provides a safer, more flexible, intentional, open and more hopeful setting for treating the patients and families we serve.

One of the most notable changes is Shodair will go from having 74 beds in 44 rooms to having 82 individual rooms and bathrooms. This provides a more therapeutic environment for young people dealing with gender fluidity and privacy issues. The new building offers a café open to the public with a coffee bar, grab-n-go lunches, and full catering services.

Service lines expanded into psychiatric outpatient care to have clinics in four cities: Bozeman, Butte, Helena, and Missoula. The goal is to provide preventative services to those struggling before they may need an acute admission. This also helps break down barriers to services and provides a continuum of care.

The new building is truly what Montana kids de serve and strictly focused on patient care as 87 percent of the building is direct patient care. All administrative and support services will be housed in the onethird of the current building that will remain standing upon completion. The two-thirds of the hospital that is scheduled to be demolished will provide 600 parking spots for families, guests and employees.

The number of young people who died by suicide in this state is higher than it’s been in more than a decade. There is a constant waiting list for a bed for Shodair’s inpatient care and those children often sit in emergency rooms until there is room.

The new building is designed so all spaces are flexible for a wide variety of uses for all times of day or night. There will be a new swimming pool, a full-size gymnasium, and a smudging room and spirituality space. There is a private admissions entrance, an edu cation wing, and four rooms with negative air pressure to address communicable diseases. The grounds will feature walking paths, a therapeutic garden, an orchard, and courtyards for patient play.

Shodair Children’s Hospital Genetics Laboratory recently purchased an Illumina iScan microarray system. This cutting-edge instrument adds capabilities and higher throughput to the lab’s already existing testing options, allowing the lab to produce higher quality results and add new tests to our catalog. Future test options for this instrument include pharmacogenetics, carrier screening, and epigenetic disease profiling.

This instrument increases our capacity up to hundreds of samples a week and consolidates several of our tests to a single instrument rather than individual manual processes.

Genetics Lab Adds New Microarray Scanning Instrument

“Our previous microarray platform limited us to running about 8 to 16 samples per week, one at a time, for a very specific test to look for large extra or missing DNA material in a patient’s genome that may be associated with disease,” says Corbin Schwanke, Chief Administrative Officer of Medical Genetics. “This instrument increases that capacity up to hundreds of samples a week and consolidates several of our tests to a single instrument rather than individual manual processes. It also will support some of our growing sequencing assays, focusing on areas most critical to genetic disease diagnosis.”

When I was asked to be the champion child and these memories flooded through me, I was unsure if my story would help, but more honestly, if I was the right person to help. I was asked to come in for an interview with the foundation team, and I would be lying if I said I didn’t order several different dresses and panic about what to do with my hair before that meeting. As I walked into the foundation building, I was greeted by the warmth and excitement of a new opportunity. I felt like I was in the right place, and I knew I could breathe. Now was the time to make new memories with some of the same people, but with so many new ones. I was overwhelmed with emotion once again as I started to meet the people who would now be on my team, and who would give me just as much support as I had when I was fighting for my life. It was a huge relief to get to see some of the same people who have always been part of my story but also get to add so many new characters to a new chapter.

As my year as Shodair’s local champion child was coming to a close, I was asked to attend lunch with my new Shodair team and the former CEO of Children’s Miracle Network, John Lauck. Shortly after we sat down and said our hellos, John said, “We are here to celebrate Bella” and he looked at me and said, “Bella you have been chosen as national champion for 2020”.

My time as a champion was impactful to so many people, but most of all to myself. Shodair saved my life, and now as an employee I’d like to think I am returning the favor. My three years as a champion was one of the hardest things I have done, but it was the most hopeful I have ever been in my 19 years on this earth. I don’t have the words to express my gratitude, so a simple thank you will have to do for now. Thank you. n

As I made my way through my first year as a champion, I was given real life experience that my story was helping people and being able to share it made an impact. Experiences like a current patient coming up to me during the NAMI walk and saying “I saw your video. Thank you for sharing your story, it really helped me.” and giving me a hug or walking into a doctor’s office and the nurse saying “I saw you in the newspaper, that’s so cool. Thank you!”

hen I was asked to be the champion child for Shodair, I was overwhelmed with emotion and memories from my time as a patient all seemed to come rushing back at once. Memories of the staff who supported me, the lifelong friends I made, and all the doors that were opened for me.

I was here, I was alive, and I was making an impact. I used to talk a lot about the difference between surviving and living, and there I was, living. I was incredibly lucky to have the experiences I had during my time as a champion. Like traveling to Las Vegas and speaking to 7,000 people at the MGM Grand or getting to talk to Lady Gaga’s team and having them publish an article about my story, and the little stuff, like Jamba Juice smoothies every time I traveled, or flying for the first time. Even better than the experiences I had were the people.

I was given real life experience that my story was helping people and being able to share it made an impact.

John changed my life that day, and not necessarily with the superficial fun stuff, but because he helped the 7-year-old girl who often hid under tables because of the magnitude of her anxiety was so great. For the first time in an awfully long time, that anxiety felt far behind me.

BELLA NYMAN SHARES HER THOUGHTS ON BEING SHODAIR CHAMPION CHILD My Story

These five drops of blood can trigger a phone call from the Montana Department of Health and Human Services to Shodair’s Newborn Screening (NBS) Follow-up team. In partnership with Colorado Children’s Hospital, the NBS Follow-up team provides interim guidance while a diagnosis is confirmed or excluded. Care for these babies is initiated as soon as possible, sometimes even before a diagnosis is completely confirmed. If further follow-up is indicated, the babies will be integrated into the Shodair Metabolic clinic which provides long-term follow-up care and support for babies and their families. While the Metabolic clinic is located in Helena, the clinic offers telemedicine and outreach clinics in various Montana towns as a way to serve the entire state and decrease the barrier of geographical distance for families.

Five drops of blood provide enough information to indicate whether further testing is necessary. The disorders have big names, and big consequences to go along with them. Take galactosemia, or GALT deficiency, for example. Babies born with this disorder cannot prop erly metabolize galactose, a sugar present in breast milk and regular infant formula, and rapidly develop severe and life-threatening problems if a lactose-free diet is not implemented soon after birth. Fatty acid oxidation disorders such as medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydro genase, or MCAD, deficiency, may not be apparent in the first few months of life but can have sudden severe symptoms including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) if caretakers are not aware of how to manage the condition to avoid health crises.

Newborn screening was initiated to prevent severe disabilities and can save lives through early diagnosis and treatment. The Newborn screening program in Montana is a state-based public health program that tests infants shortly after birth for conditions that can cause disability or death if left undetected and untreated. Most newborn screenings are done using a few drops of blood obtained from a heel stick in the first 24 to 48 hours of life.

Angela Dusko, supervisor for the DPHHS Newborn Metabolic Screening and Serology Section, said the partnership with Shodair is important because it provides a network of health professionals dedicated to timely diagnostic testing and early intervention and follow up care for Montana infants. The partnership helps families navigate the special needs of an infant who is diagnosed with an inheritable and rare condition, sometimes throughout the life of the child. A positive newborn screening result requires swift follow up. This includes arranging for diagnostic tests to confirm the newborn screening results and providing access to the essential medical services needed to minimize the effects of the underlying disor der. In Montana, these critical steps are provided by the Newborn Screening Follow-up Program of the Medical Genetics Department at Shodair Children’s Hospital. Shodair also ensures ongoing specialty medical management to the patients and their families.

The State of Montana contracts with Shodair Children’s Hospital for diagnostic follow-up services as well as clinical support for diagnosed cases of herita ble metabolic disorders. This is one of the many ways Shodair works to address health needs of the entire state, because early detection and intervention can make a huge difference in how severely a child is affected by some of these conditions.

Shodair’s NBS Follow-up team and Metabolic clinic are well established and maintain an incredible reputation throughout Montana, the region, and the nation. Once a patient is established, they often main tain lifelong relationships with Shodair’s providers.

Chip is known for his quiet smile and staying level-headed in stressful situations. His steady work keeps Shodair’s doors open!

Chip loves spending time outdoors camping, boating, skiing, and traveling with friends.

Chip is a 49ers fan.

His favorite part of his job is the variety of work he gets to do in the maintenance department and the interaction between co-workers from all departments. He has worked exclusively at Shodair his entire career beginning in high school.

Part of the Shodair family for 42 years His first job was cleaning surgery rooms back when Shodair was a pediatric hospital.

Each year the Allied Therapy Department, the Education staff from the Yellowstone and Glacier units, and other volunteers from throughout the hospital complete a week-long training on how to properly facilitate course sessions with our patients. Before each ropes course season begins, the patients participate in an orientation that covers expectations of being on the course and the climbing commands to be used. At the beginning of each ropes course group, every person present participates in a thumb scale vote. This includes all facilitators, staff, and patients, regard less of participation level. Level one is the least chal lenging and level five is the most challenging element the group could participate in. Thumbs up means the group as a whole is good to go at this level, thumbs sideways means the group is at this level, but would need some support, and thumbs down means this level would be too challenging for the group. The facilitators then decide which elements the group will be utilizing for that session.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AND TRUST AT THE SHODIAR ROPES CHALLENGE COURSE “Therapy?AlliedWHATIS

I really can trust you guys, can’t I?”

This is a quote from a patient after a ropes course session. This patient had been struggling to connect with staff and to focus on the treatment provided. After this session, the patient was able to verbalize he felt better connected and had more trust in the staff.

Every year Shodair’s Ropes Challenge Course helps groups of patients develop trust, social and communi cation skills, and build team cohesiveness within the programs. The original ropes challenge course was constructed in 1999; in 2020, a new course was built. This course consists of 10 high elements that focus on trust and team building and is open from the end of May until the middle of October. Between the two courses, there have been 21,608 hours of instructional time on the ropes–the equivalent of two and half years!

After a patient is properly secured, the Five Hs safety check is used. The helmets, harnesses, and hardware of both the climber and the belayer are checked. The climber and belayer then check for any hazards seen and ask each other how they feel (the human in the Five Hs).Once

WHAT IS YOUR CHOICE? This is the verbalization of what the patient is choosing to do on the ropes course. WHAT WILL BE A CHALLENGE FOR YOU? This is aimed at helping the patient identify what they feel they need to overcome while climbing the element. WHAT WILL BE EASY FOR YOU? This helps the patient state what they feel their strength will be when climbing.

Patients can verbalize what they want from their staff and peers while they are climbing. This could be cheering, quiet, one person talking, having jokes told, singing, or whatever support the patient would like.

Shodair utilizes a challenge by choice program.

Ropes Challenge Course helps groups of patients develop trust, social and communication skills, and build team cohesiveness within the programs. Before a patient climbs, they are asked four questions:

We wholeheartedly believe a patient has the autonomy to decide their participation level during a session. This may mean climbing and completing every element, being the equipment manager, walking on to the course, climbing two or three steps up the pole, or simply cheering for and being a support to their peers.

The patients are then asked who they would like to be their primary belayer. They can choose from any of the trained ropes course facilitators on the course. They also get to choose their backup belayer. This can be any of the staff or peers who are on the ropes course.

Meverden watched the teenager from a safe distance while Aubrey sat by her side. Her name is Aubrey and she is Shodair’s newest four-legged, furry employee. Trained in Georgia at the non-profit Canine Assistants, the facility dog joined the team in October 2021. Aubrey makes about 100 visits to patients each week and she’s already made a huge positive impact.“Aubrey’s superpower is knowing who needs her when,” said handler Lindsay Meverden, a recreational therapist. “As her sidekick, I can’t look at somebody and instantly know what they’re feeling, but she does. There could be a room full of 50 people and if I let her off her leash, she would go to who needed her most in that moment.”

“She’srates.in tune,” Meverden said. “She’s empathetic. She uses all her senses to reach out to patients.” But when she’s not helping patients, Aubrey is your typical canine with a healthy work-life balance that includes toys, walk ie talkies and rolling in anything stinky. In the morning, Aubrey runs zoomies in her backyard. That’s her pre-work routine, Meverden said. But then it’s all business.

The patient calmed and was able to rejoin the day’s activities. Aubrey had helped keep another kid safe. It’s like Aubrey was born to help Shodair’s young patients, and in a way, she was. The

“We hope to be able to grow the program to provide more consistent access to facility dogs across the entire hospital, as well as in the community,” said recreational therapist and handler Bridgette Wiegand. “I watched her hands unclench,” Meverden said. “She leaned into Aubrey and Aubrey leaned into her.”

Part of the family for years thing eaten: worked 7 different roles here at Shodair: Housekeeper, Window Washer, Kitchen Hood Cleaner, Dishwasher, O.R. Cleaner, Driver, Supervisor.

The thing most people don’t know about him: His age. His life mentors are his mother, and his mother and father in-law. Hobbies: metal detecting, gold panning, antiques. Things he binge-watches repeatedly: Oak Island and YouTube .

Hurley said she was scared but relieved as she hung up the phone and anxiously waited for her two younger children to arrive home from school. “I honestly broke down,” she said. “I was a complete hot mess.” But accord ing to Hurley, the time Dakotah and his father shared together in the emergency room was the needed breakthrough to open up the lines of communication.

Soon after the first stay, Hurley received another call from Willis saying she was taking Dakotah to the emer gency room for suicidal ideations. Chris Hurley, Dako tah’s dad, left immediately for the hospital. Because the pandemic limited visitors, Danielle remained at home.

H ELENA THERAPIST ADRIA WILLIS HAD BEEN SEEING HER 15-YEAR-OLD CLIENT FOR ABOUT TWO MONTHS WHEN SHE CALLED THE CLIENT’S MOTHER: WILLIS WAS CONCERNED FOR HER CLIENT’S SAFETY, SEEING THAT HE HAD BEEN SELF-HARMING.

“She said Dakotah needed some help with his suicidal thoughts,” Hurley said. This was in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its height. It was also only the first time Dakotah would be admitted to Shodair. According to Hurley, “The first stay at Shodair he kind of didn’t take it seriously and said what he needed to say to go home, but the next couple of weeks he just went downhill.”

Danielle Hurley said Willis spoke to her about access to sharp objects, firearms, and medication in the home and offered to contact Shodair Children’s Hospital for the potential of admission. Her client, Dakotah, was 15 and a sophomore at Helena High School, a diverse school of 1,200 students located in the state’s capital city.

Dr. Heather Zaluski, Medical Director of Psychiatry, says most people with depression describe their state of mind as utter sadness, lack of drive, and an overwhelm ing sense of giving up.

“We have got to get to a place where mental health is like our blood pressure,” Shodair CEO Craig Aasved said. “At one point, it might be whatever the normal range is for the individual, and at another moment, it’s high and calls for attention. For many of us with high blood pressure, medication is needed to stabilize. Well, mental health is the same on so many levels.”

“He was always willing to try something new,” Danielle said. “He went from being in Chess Club, playing basketball and in mathletes to almost refusing to leave his room.”

Like so many other teens in Montana, Dakotah struggles with generalized anxiety and depression. A recent Youth Risk Behaviors Report from the Office of Public Instruction reports more than fifty percent of Montana teens say they have felt so hopeless they stopped participating in an activity. Twenty seven percent of teenagers were hospitalized from a suicide attempt. And last year there were more than double the number of completed suicides in Montana than in the pastMontanadecade.

It was during this time Dakotah was secretly making a plan to end his life. He had been self-harming for years at that point; however, it was the first time he was active ly considering suicide. “It definitely started at the end of 8th grade, and it was a very dramatic change; like a flip of a switch and there was no real trigger,’” he said.

“Depression brings hopelessness, low energy, lack of motivation, and difficulties with sleep, so the very things you need to feel better—like getting a good night’s rest, exercising every day, taking care of yourself, and connecting with other people—are made more difficult by the disease itself,” Zaluski said.

SUPPORTIVE HOME LIFE

MAKING IT THE NORM

has remained in the top five states for suicides for many years. While nobody seems to have a clear answer as to why, there are several movements afoot to address the problem. Shodair is one of the leaders across the state to bring access to anyone that needs it by eliminating geographical barriers through tele-health and financial barriers by accepting all in surances and private pay. Shodair also leads the way by making mental health a dinner table conversation rather than a secret only shared with a doctor.

Ready to receive care Dakotah, now 17, says he can look back and reflect on that time with an open heart.

“It’s not fun to remember some of how I felt, but it’s a point in time that was dark and sad,” he said. “I know now that even in times of depression, hope can be found, and I know how to look for it.”

Dakotah lives with his parents and two other siblings: Keira, 12 and Joshua, 14. The family believes in sticking together, spending time outdoors, and enjoying life despite its challenges. They are proud to be natives of the Treasure State. The home is a safe space where the children are allowed to find themselves without fear of judgment. Chris and Danielle have can did conversations with all the children and intentionally check-in with their mental health regularly. The Hurleys work hard and enjoy nothing better than family time together in any kind of setting. And they are aware of their own mental health needs. Danielle, who works at Blue Cross Blue Shield, is more conscious of her own mental health now. “In the field that I’m in, I am aware of how bad mental issues are out there and I am mindful of that with my personal relationships, especially my family.”

Despite all this, the Hurleys struggled to support Dakotah. “It just got to a point that we didn’t know what to do,” Chris said. Dakotah and his family found what they needed at Shodair. It was a safe space where Dakotah felt less like a stranger in the world. He settled into I was ready to get help and I believed I was worthy of helping myself and it was only then that things kind of started to click.

Danielle Hurley suggests parents of all children, but particularly teenagers, pay attention to sudden changes in their behavior. She says Dakotah went from being an active, engaged, and outgoing boy to a person that is dismissive, withdrawn, and resistant to being with his family.

Being admitted to Shodair a second time felt different to Dakotah. It was a sunny day in April, and while still a blur to Dakotah, what he does recall is a shift in his mindset. “I was ready to get help and I believed I was worthy of helping myself and it was only then that things kind of started to click,” he said.

SURVIVING—AND THRIVING

Dakotah is one of thousands of young people across the state who benefited from the structure. He looks forward to his future, which once wasn’t the case. This fall, Dakotah plans to attend Concordia University in Minnesota on an academic scholarship and study psychology. He says he’d like to work in the field that helped him not only survive life—but thrive in life. n

It means forgiving mistakes, of ourselves and of others, and working through it so we have the ability to let go and move on. It means reconciling with loved ones. At Shodair, this surfaces through programming using an evidence-based, trauma-informed care model. Shodair received certification last year in the Sanctuary Model, a comprehensive training program that provides language and tools to care for patients who have experienced trauma. It also helps guide employees as they face their own past traumas and gives them the ability to deal with a traumatized patient population.

SHODAIR LOOKING TO SELL PROPERTY NEAR THE BIG SNOWY MOUNTAINS

The State of Montana is considering a purchase of land in the southern foothills of the Big Snowy Mountains that could open up access to more than 100 thousand acres of public land. The 56-hundred-acre Big Snowy Mountains Ranch was donated to Shodair Children’s Hospital when its owner died.

Craig Aasved, CEO of the hospital, said the hospital has been looking to sell the property. “We knew we would likely not hold onto that property,” he told Public News Service, “but what was most important to us is selling that property to a buyer that would make it public for citizens of Montana.”

The Montana State University community is so gener ous and highly invested in the wellness of the sons and daughters of the state of Montana. I can’t wait to see what our new leaders do with this program and how much it grows in the coming years.

I joined MSU Dance Marathon during my freshman year at Montana State. I have always loved to dance, so I knew I would enjoy being a part of this club. Initially, I was unaware the Dance Marathon was much more than just dancing. I quickly learned about Shodair and their in credible work for Montana youth struggling with mental illness and genetic disorders. Since its start, I have seen Montanathon grow from a passionate group of 10 people to over 500 students participating throughout our four years. I saw the organization start at the brainstorming stage and end with a highly organized and successful first event in During2019.the first year of COVID, Montanathon and so many organizations quickly lost traction at MSU and had to start from zero this year as we are returning to a “nor mal” state. I honestly never planned to lead MSU Dance Marathon, but with the skills and knowledge I learned from leaders in past events, I was confident in bringing the Montanathon back to campus. Our team shrank from 15 on the executive team (the event planning and coordi nating teams) to 7 as we got closer to the event on Febru ary 27th, 2022. The executive team worked extremely hard to bring the best Dance Marathon event possible to MSU with the support of our CMN campus manager, Shelby Wells, and Shodair Foundation Representatives Keith Meyer and Adrienna Hines.The executive team was a small group of students who had never seen a Dance Marathon. I want to highlight the impact they made for Montanathon this year, despite their limited experience. To start, Lauren Kaiser-Jackson, the Event Operations chair, planned and organized all the details of the event. Julia Koplin, the Special Events and Fundraising chair, planned fundraising pushes through out the year and planned other community engagement events. Logan Turner, the Participant Relations chair, wrote emails and other com munications to Montanathon Participants.

Kalten Hen drickson and Jaedyn Birch mier, the Partnership chairs, gathered donations from local businesses to give away at the event. Kaitlyn Frank, the Event Operations and Special Events committee member, assisted in all things event planning. Emmett Van Allen, the Internal Director, provided support across the entire Becauseorganization.ofthisincredible team, we planned and exe cuted one of the first large events on campus since March 2020. We were able to share the mission of Shodair to over 100 students on February 27th and raise over $16,000 for the hospital’s “Hope Takes Flight” campaign. I’m so proud of this team for persevering through COVID, a small planning team, and planning this event practically from scratch.AsItransition out of my role as External Director, I hope to see Montanathon grow into a massive program.

Faulker, who lives in Ulm, also works as a Cottage Behavioral Counselor and the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind in Great Falls. She first came to Shodair at the age of 24 when her mother was working in the genetics lab. Her hope was to learn there was a common thread causing the trouble with her eyes, hearing, and joints.

“I wanted validation that I had conditions that could be attributed to the physical struggles I had,” she said. “It was when I told (Shodair Genetics Team) I had a detached retina that all points led to an ulti mate diagnosis of Stickler syndrome, a connective disorder effecting various parts of the body.

Montana mom Erin Faulkner is that parent partner for this program and is a perfect fit for the role. Being a genetics patient herself, she understands the struggles families face. She is one of a handful of parent partners in Montana working

Her daughter Sam was diagnosed at three weeks old. “The difference between those periods in my youth and my daughter was support,” she said. “Knowing where to turn when I had questions made an enormous difference in my nervousness.”

Years later when Erin and her husband Byron decided to have a family her relationship with Shodair deepened. There’s a 50-50 chance a child she birthed would also have this same condition, but it was a risk she was willing to take because she so wanted to be a mom. The healthcare space can be intimidating for those unfamiliar with its nuances. It can be particu larly uncertain for parents of a child diagnosed with unique health issues, especially in a place like Montana where geographic distances are vast and population sizes are small in comparison to other US metropoli tan areas. This can often leave parents feeling vulnerable but thanks to a partnership between Montana’s Department of Health and Human Services and Shodair’s Medical Genetics Department those worries are addressed through connection and support.

“The Montana Parent Partner Program provides an immensely valuable service to our patients,” Corbin Schwanke Chief Admin istrative Officer of Genetics said. “Genetic syndromes are individually rare, but collectively very common, and many patients and families experience similar challenges in their journeys after a diagnosis.”

Erin understands its hard for any parent to watch their child struggle and she is honored to be the one on the other end offering patience and kindness. “Sometimes its merely someone saying to a mom, I’m here and I have your back,” she said.

Schwanke is a huge supporter of the program and says Faulkner is a perfect fit. “Having a peer, who has traveled that path in her own family, available to support parents who are struggling to find or access resourc es in the community is so appreci ated by our patients and providers,” Schwanke said. “If nothing else, it’s helpful just to have someone to talk to who truly understands. A Parent Partner is the embodiment of our mission statement: To heal, help, and inspire hope. “

Suicide Prevention Scholarship Contest

As part of its continued effort to create a healthy and hopeful Montana, Shodair hosted a statewide Suicide Prevention Awareness initiative inviting middle and high schoolers from the state to submit an essay, a video, or artwork addressing suicide and mental health with the hope of winning one of the four $2,500 prizes.

The topic of suicide and mental health has often been taboo in the past and this is one way Shodair hopes to normalize conversations of this very real topic. Since its origination, the contest has had a positive reception by teens across the state and has gained momentum in participation since it began in 2019. The hospital hopes to continue with this trajectory to reach more students and families than ever before. This coming year submissions will be accepted in early 2023 with winners announced in May for Mental Health month.Thanks to many statewide businesses and organizations Shodair awards $10,000 in scholarships through this opportunity to encourage students to engage in critical thinking and speaking up about mental health, suicide prevention, decreasing the stigma, and how to unite with hope.

A panel of six judges outside of Shodair reviewed each submission across the various categories thoroughly and judged based on the level of messag ing, how impactful the piece was, and the project’s creativity in response to this year’s theme: What impact has the pandemic had on the mental health of youth? The submissions received created a space for deeper understand ing, inspired hope, and depicted the often-harsh realities of what it is like for those who struggle with mental health difficulties and suicidal thoughts.
