Pink Day - West Lakes Bowling Club As you would be aware the Open Gender policy that was implemented for Season 2008/09 is to be reviewed at the end of the season. This issue has certainly been polarizing, with strong opinions on both sides of the debate. The review process for the policy has begun with a Steering Committee formed. This committee includes members of last year’s committee, as well as new representatives and encompasses a broad cross section of the bowls community; including representatives from the Equal Opportunity Commission and the Office for Recreation and Sport. It is important to note that there are significant legal considerations in this process and it is imperative that all elements of the policy and related implications are examined thoroughly. The Steering Committee will meet regularly over the coming months with the aim to have a recommendation to the April Council meeting and ratification of a policy for next season at the May Board meeting. To ensure every member of the bowling community has the opportunity to express their thoughts and provide feedback on this important issue, a survey has been designed and is available at the Bowls SA website at www.bowlssa.com.au This survey has also been distributed to every club and we ask that it is completed and returned to Bowls SA by 11 March 2009.
Unfortunately due to the current financial climate the sponsor of our Membership cards had to withdraw their financial contribution. The Board decided without this input it would not be viable to distribute them this season. Instead, it has been decided that a card will be produced in-house and provided on request only. Each Club’s Administration Secretary has been informed of the process required to obtain a membership card for their members, so if you are wishing to play bowls whilst interstate, please submit your request for a Bowls SA Membership card to your Club. As the finals for both the metropolitan and country regions approach I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all bowlers participating the best of luck!

It’s been a busy couple of months. I had the pleasure of accompanying the Bowls SA State Squads who travelled to Moama to compete in the Interstate series against Victoria for the Loy Carroll Trophy (Men), The Mulga Cup (Ladies), the Middleton/Smith Shield for U18 Boys and the Valmai Lewis Shield for the U18 Girls in January 2009. It was a privilege to witness our Men, Ladies, Junior Boys and Girls all playing at the one venue at the same time for their respective states. With a win in three of the four events and SA retaining the Loy Carroll and Valmai Lewis Trophies, adding the Mulga Cup and the boys being not far away, it looks promising for the future and the up-coming National Sides Championships to be held in Canberra in March. To all the players of the SA sides, you played extremely well in Moama and represented your State with distinction and should be proud of what you achieved. I look forward to seeing how our teams fare against the other states in the nation’s capital. Due to the extreme heat experienced over the last month, players and officials are reminded that adequate precautions should be taken to ensure their health, safety and well-being. Any player who considers that the forecast temperature for the day of play will have an adverse effect on them can withdraw from the selected side. If we all take the appropriate precautions we should be able to enjoy our great sport safely. Good luck to all bowlers for the up-coming finals! Bob Cooper

Shane Smallacombe is the personification of the changing face of lawn bowls.
At just 27 years of age, Shane, who works as an accountant for the Adelaide Crows by day, and moonlights as the secretary of the Lockleys Bowling Club by night, is not averse to rolling up his sleeves and getting his hands dirty. To put it quite simply, you either put up or shut up! “If you’re not happy about how a job is being done, don’t whinge about it and offer no solution, put your hand up and help fix it,” Smallacombe said recently after helping his club launch the 2012 World Championships. “I have always been highly motivated to work in the sporting industry, I have been

working toward becoming a high level administrator in the Australian sporting framework since I began university in 1999.” “I originally took a role with the Grange Golf Club as an accountant where I gathered a wealth of knowledge in small club management and the differences between clubs and businesses.” “From there I moved into a large corporate environment to increase my skill set, which was done with the view of returning to the sporting landscape at the first opportunity.” “I have always been a strong believer in the saying- ‘put your money where your mouth is.” “At the 2008 (Lockleys Bowling Club) AGM the role of secretary had been vacated and the club was struggling for nominations
for the role, I decided that although there would be a significant time commitment in the role, I knew that I wanted to see my club progress forward and that I wanted to be part of shaping the future of the club, so I decided to put my hand up and nominate for the position.” Having acquired a strong skill set in the corporate and sporting worlds, Smallacombe is able to combine his love of bowls with his business acumen. But it’s Smallacombe’s foray into bowls which paints the best picture. Having filled in for his father’s Night Owls team as a 14-year-old, Smallacombe quickly became a regular player, winning back to back titles along the way, as well as the State Night Owls Championship. At the same time, he combined social bowls with a number of other sports including golf, before dipping his toes in the pennant scene. SA V’s VIC @ Moama Loy Carroll Trophy Last year South Australia reclaimed the Loy Carroll Trophy after it had spent some time in the hands of our Victorian compatriots. When the SA men travelled to Moama this January, they knew the importance of being able to defend this title away from home. SA started well, due in no small part to the leaders, who were an asset over the entire series. The 1st Test set the standard, with the result hinging on Wayne Ruediger’s last end. With the overall scores being tied, Ruediger played two magnificent bowls to see SA win by a single shot and give the boys the start we wanted. On Monday morning the 2nd Test was played in calm conditions and once again the SA players bowled extremely well and had the edge over the powerful VIC team for most of the game, SA winning 84 to 73. For the 3rd Test the green speed had picked up by about two seconds and SA did not adapt quickly enough, trailing for most of the game; Victoria winning the 3rd Test 91 to 73. The crucial 4th Test was played on the Tuesday morning in hot conditions. SA was slow to start once again and trailed by over 20 shots well into the game. A courageous fight back saw SA close the margin to four shots late in the game but Vic prevailed by seven shots, winning 82 to 75 meaning the series came down to the final Test match. SA started the final Test strongly and within a short time led by in excess of 20 shots. With the leaders playing brilliantly, well supported by all other players, SA finished off the series winning 85 to 65 to retain the Loy Carroll Trophy.

Women’s Test Series SA V’s VIC @ Moama What an exciting Test Series this was for our South Australian team. The 1st Test resulted in a great win for SA (75-44), but the Victorian ladies had different ideas about letting us repeat it in the second Test. Victoria came out more determined and the result was a hard fought game, in very hot conditions, which we lost on the last end (58–59). The 3rd Test saw SA fight back with another good win (80-46) giving us a 2-1 lead. In the 4th Test the Victorian team were determined not to let SA take the series; fighting hard to win (67-47). With both teams on two Tests each, it was set up for a very exciting final Test to finish the Series. Played under very hot conditions, gusty winds and fast greens the SA side did their State proud producing some superb bowls, taking out the 5th Test (66-44) and the Series 3–2.
The Triples skippered by Kate Smith, with Prue Goonan (2nd) and Renee McPharlin (Lead) were steady and compatible, winning two games 19–10, 18–17, losing 13-14 in their remaining game. Kate also skippered the Fours and was well supported by Nicole, Prue and Renee. Results being one win 21-13 and two losses 11-26 and 21-23. By the end of Day two SA had won both Tests and retained the Shield. Laini Murray and Kate now leave our Squad and we congratulate and thank them for the many years of contribution they have given to our State team and our Junior Squad.
Under 18 Boys The Pairs were the most solid over the three days winning two of their three games. This event was certainly a learning experience for all of the boys involved. The players learnt a lot from the series, and this showed by the turn-around in results in the WA Interstate Tri-Series . Bowls SA thanks the families of the players for the sacrifices and support you have given to the State Squads.
Under 18 Girls After training long and hard the U18 girls were anxious to do well; and with determination and a focus on enjoyment, great bowling prevailed. Breeanna Dickson played the three Singles games against Lisa Phillips, showing us all that she is a dynamic Singles player of the future. Breeanna was rewarded for her consistent form with two wins 21–25, 25–21 and a loss 10–25. The Pair’s combination of Nicole Bartlett (Skip) and Renee McPharlin on the mat proved to be a match winning duo, winning all three games 16–14, 25–17 and 17-11.

Under 18 Girls Bowls SA’s new-look girl’s team put in some brilliant performances and adapted very well to the challenging conditions. Candise Jenke, in a very sound debut performance, led in the Fours and Triples. Prue Goonan played third in the Fours and second in the Triples, making a solid contribution throughout the event. Nicole Bartlett continues to grow in stature with another solid role as Skip in the Pairs and her first time as Skip in the Fours playing some fantastic conversion shots. Renee McPharlin was very steady as lead in the Pairs with Nicole and played second in the Fours. Breeanna Dickson continues to play Singles with a lot of maturity and she Skipped the Triples for the first time; showing that she can take on a leadership role with confidence. Whilst SA did not win many matches against quality opposition, it was an outstanding performance by our team and we look forward to the future with great expectations. Under 18 Boys The boys had an outstanding event only losing two matches for the Series, a brilliant effort, and the quality of the individual performances by the five boys was a credit to their dedication and work ethic. Zane Cini played Singles and led in the Triples, his draw bowling was outstanding. Nathan Pedersen led in the Pairs and the Fours, turning heads with his confidence and quality of play, proving he is a force of the future. Matthew Northcott Skipped the Triples and Fours in only his second appearance in state colours, showing extraordinary improvement. His shot play was amazing and we look forward to his leadership in the future. Todd Brand was second in the Triples and the Fours and should be very proud of his performances as he not only bowled well but was vocal and positive support for his team mates. Bradley Klose Skipped the Pairs and was 3rd in the Fours and had a fantastic series putting in a strong performance for the whole event. Todd and Bradley now leave our Squad. We look forward to following their progress through the U25’s and Seniors.

The inaugural “Pink Day” hosted by West Lakes Bowling Club was held on Friday 9 January; the first ‘coloured’ theme event for most bowlers and, from the feedback we have received, it may have to be an annual day!

72 attendees from various clubs - West Lakes, Grange, Semaphore, Woodville, Lockleys, Henley Beach, Hope Valley, Happy Valley, Clarence Gardens, Salisbury and Payneham played two games of 15 ends of two bowl Triples. Each team was given a “Joker Card”, meaning in every game a team could double their score on a nominated end, and this resulted in great fun, some secret strategies and interesting results. The greens were ‘a-pink’ with pink wigs, glitter sunglasses, feather boas, ribbons, flowers, bows, decorated hats, dyed shoelaces, dyed pink hair, jewellery, and our official adjudicator, Ron Mitchell, even wore a pink shirt and cap. $185 was raised for Breast Cancer SA an excellent result! “As a ‘younger’ bowler of 57 I was in awe of the trouble taken to support and enjoy this day..... when the job was given to me last season to arrange this gala day and I suggested this theme, I never expected such an awesome result - a very rewarding day with great memories”. Development SA Bowling Clubs Get Active! The May 2008 round of the ‘Active Club Program’ grants from the Office for Recreation and Sport has seen 14 Bowling Clubs receive grants totalling almost $90,000. The Active Club Program provides financial assistance to South Australian not-forprofit community-based active recreation and sporting organisations to develop and expand the services they provide, thereby increasing the community’s access to quality active recreation and sport activities and facilities. The Bowling Clubs that were successful were: Aldinga Bay, Ascot Park, Hahndorf, Henley, Kensington Gardens, Morphett Vale, Myponga, Naracoorte, Novar Gardens, Para Hills, Port Elliot, Saddleworth and Walkerville. These clubs have received funding for a range of projects and equipment such as flood lighting for greens, new maintenance equipment, small junior friendly bowls, funding to print promotional material and funding to set up Junior Development Programs. It is great to see the imaginative thinking of some of the clubs out there. The Saddleworth Bowling Club were successful in receiving $18,500 towards the extensions of their clubrooms. The club were notified of the grant through the SA Bowler and as part of the preparation process they obtained quotes from trades people, all totalling around the $37,000 mark. Fortunately the club had been putting money aside for this extension and were able to meet dollar for dollar the grant expenses. The extension to the clubhouse will enable them to have their own kitchen, toilets and disabled toilets all under one roof. They have also had to upgrade the electricity supply to the building by putting the supply underground to the clubrooms and the existing Community Centre Clubrooms, which are used by the tennis club, the netball club and the community at large for some functions.

Preparing the application for the grant was quite a big job. After gaining the quotes it was necessary to obtain letters of support from all the local community groups that have and are involved in the use of the Bowls clubrooms and bowling greens in the town. They also obtained a letter of support from the local Government member. After the application was started a free information night was held which provided assistance and ideas on how to apply for grants. At Morphett Vale the grant was used to purchase a sprayer machine. The spraying of the greens was previously done by hand and was not only time consuming but also caused many Occupational Health & Safety issues. “The new sprayer will rectify these issues and will keep our bowling greens strong and healthy for many years to come”, said Cathy Vluggen. The Hahndorf Bowling Club commenced Junior Bowls Coaching seven years ago. The program started with eight students. In the first term of 2008 the club coached more than 300 primary school students each week. In 2009 this number is expected to increase as more schools become involved and secondary schools enter the program. About 20 bowlers volunteer their time for the program. With the escalating numbers, pressure was placed on the club’s limited supply of bowling equipment. The successful application for funding has relieved this problem. With the $4,970 they have purchased 12 sets of small bowls, six target mats, measures and jacks. Hahndorf can now look forward confidently to the 2009 season and are most appreciative of the Active Club Grant. Novar Gardens future now brighter As a result of the $6,250 Government Grant from SA Active Clubs Program, the Novar Gardens Bowling Club was able to upgrade their outdoor lighting of the Greens to satisfactorily illuminate all 12 rinks for night bowling. The Club hosts twilight/night social bowls each Tuesday night for approximately 80 players between October and March beginning with a BBQ Tea. The Club has an all weather synthetic outdoor carpet which is ideal for night bowling. New bowlers are welcome and loan bowls are freely available. This popular bowling program has attracted many young people to the game of bowls. Some of these young players have subsequently gone on to play pennant bowls for the Club.
Federal Government Volunteer Grants Program In October 2008 the North Broken Hill Bowling Club made an application with the Volunteer Grants Program 2008 for lawn bowls for the Willyama High School to use when attending the club as part of their sport’s program. During 2008 the club had the pleasure of having the students attend to learn the fundamentals of the game of bowls. It did not take long for the students to grasp the concept of bowls. The club coach and members who helped the students found that the size of the bowls were too big for the size of their hands to deliver the bowls properly. In consultation with their teacher it was decided to write to the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation for funding. Sadly the club was informed that the department had no funding available for bowls equipment. They suggested that we apply for the Federal Government’s Volunteers Grants program. The club made the application pointing out the club provides activities that offer recreational, social and physical development for children and adults of all skill levels. The Club supports and encourages other community groups in the city of Broken Hill to use their facilities; this includes the local high school that uses the club for students to participate in physical activities. Development Victoria - Leading the Field Over the last couple of seasons, a new program coming out of Victoria is leading the field in Junior Development; the ‘Victorian U18 Development Squads’. Established with a clear objective of targeting youngsters, especially teenage boys and girls, the RVBA/VLBA U18 Development Squads provide specialist coaching for the participants and opportunities to enjoy interacting with other keen, young bowlers. It is envisaged that these squads will be a vital link in a pathway, with inter-club junior competitions set to become another important part of youth participation, and the squads identified as a direct link to talent identification. After just over one year of operation, there are now 24 Squads located across Victoria. So successful has the program been that a State-wide U18 Development Squad Championship will be staged during the 2008-09 season. The program works by creating a ‘Squad’ of participants from a number of clubs in a close geographical area. It attempts to take one to two junior members of a number of clubs and put them together to create a squad of participants that train and interact together. Bowls Victoria Development Manager, Stephen Cardiff, recently said “The Development Squads are in their second year now and the concept is working well. The idea of bringing small numbers of junior members from each club together to form a bigger group has given those bowlers the identity and camaraderie that encourages them to stay involved in Bowls. The future of the sport is bringing younger bowlers in and this program is helping us achieve that goal. We have found that not only does the standard of bowls improve, but the kids actually blossom and grow as people under the guidance of their squad coaches and mentors.”
Juniors playing alongside seniors It was very pleasing that both the Lower Murray Bowling Association and the Great Southern Bowling Association made the decision to include juniors in an Association game played at the Goolwa Bowling Club late last year. It was also decided that the scores would count towards the result, with the Junior sides playing Triples under the same rules as the seniors. This worked very well with the Senior side playing Fours, with both finishing at the same time. Junior bowlers in both Associations have been accepted very encouragingly. About three years ago the LMBA started an Inter Schools competition within their area; the schools involved Karoonda, Meningie, Mannum and Murray Bridge. Each school played a competition amongst themselves over a period of some weeks, then selected sides to compete in a one day event. With this competition being very successful we have had additional interest from other schools wanting coaching, training and games using lawn bowls as an alternate sport. These schools have come from outside of the lower Murray area and include Browns Well, Geranium, Coomandook and other schools within Murray Bridge. In addition Regions 6 and 7 [Eastern and Southern] played juniors in the Regional game between the two sides last year, and it is hoped this will continue in the future. The State Junior Program is dependent upon juniors coming up
Region 6 Juniors through Club, Association and Regional level to finish up playing at State level. The pathways open to Juniors today includes Summer and Winter Pennants every month, SSSSA, SAPSASA, U18 State Championships, and Tailem Bend Bowling Club holds a annual U18 Open tournament in mid February. Even with these new pathways in place for juniors, better results will not be achieved without more involvement at Club, Association, and Regional levels, therefore Coordinators have a very big role to play in this process.
Bowls SA is looking to create a similar program. As a first step, Bowls SA are looking for people (parents, club members etc) who would be interested in becoming a ‘Coordinator’ of a squad. Their responsibility would be to arrange training dates and times, as well as other activities. Bowls SA will support their squads and coordinators by assisting with equipment, conducting coaching courses and helping with administration. Once a coordinator has been appointed, we will then look at the clubs and juniors in the area that could form the ‘Squad’. Get On The Green A steady flow of registrations for GOTG and Night Owls is still being received which is allowing up-todate information to be posted on the Bowls SA website. Participating GOTG and Night Owls clubs were able to register up to two teams for region finals organised for early March. The region winners will qualify to progress to the State Final, being held on Saturday 21 March at Holdfast Bay Bowling Club. A carnival atmosphere is planned for the final with games starting at 4.00pm, providing a good opportunity for players and spectators to enjoy a social atmosphere; the format will be one game before tea, then two games after tea, with the party to continue on into the night. So come to the Bay to join in the fun!
AER Pairs Clubs should now have completed their rounds of the AER Pairs with most regions now well into Region Finals, playing down to one Mixed Pair to attend the State Final. Difficulties in fitting all events into such a busy bowls program necessitated a change of date for the final which will now be held on Friday 27 March at Clarence Gardens Bowling Club. The event will be played as a knockout competition with the winner progressing to the National Final to be held at Club Helensvale (Qld) on the 5 – 8 May.

The rain stopped for the final and the enthusiastic spectators saw Mike Hocking (Adelaide) win the event from Scott Taylor (Somerton), 25-17. On a sad note, on Sunday 28 December Graham May, a member of the Marion Bowling Club, collapsed after the first game at Modbury. An ambulance took Graham to hospital and unfortunately he passed away To Graham May’s Family and the Marion Bowling Club our deepest sympathy from m all of us at Bowls SA.

Women’s 2009 Country Carnival
Conditions of Play and Administration ELIGIBILITY All players must be fully registered members of country Member Clubs under the jurisdiction of Bowls SA. FORFEITS & WITHDRAWALS If necessary to withdraw or forfeit owing to unforeseen circumstances, players must notify the Event Manager and Venue Manager. If a team or Singles player fails to fulfil a commitment without justifiable cause in the opinion of the Match and Program Committee, they shall be liable for a penalty not exceeding $27.50 inc GST per player. Failure to comply with this directive will result in each player incurring the fine and becoming ineligible to compete in all State and Pennant competitions until payment is made to Bowls SA. In the event of a forfeit the winner will be credited with 2 points and 5 shots. REPLACEMENTS In the case of a team member, who is entered in Fours, Pairs and Singles withdrawing before the commencement of the event, different replacements may be made in any event to avoid forfeits. Replacements must be a fully registered member of a Country Member Club. A replacement must be authorised by the Umpire and Event Manager and may play any position. Domestic Regulations 4.1.3 SUBSTITUTES Substitutes must be a fully registered member of a country Member Club. A substitute must be authorised by the Umpire and may play any position except Skip. Domestic Regulations 4.1.14 STARTING TIMES As listed in the Playing Schedule. Players are urged to arrive at the venue club at least 30 minutes before play is due to commence. LATE ARRIVAL – TEAM Refer to Laws of the Sport of Bowls - 46.1.2 SCORE CARDS & SCORING The names of EVERY player in the side must be recorded on score cards. Cards are to be retained by the Club Secretary until Finals are completed and must be readily available on request. The team with the greatest number of points shall be declared the winner. Winners of each game receive 2 points, a Draw 1 point, Loser nil. EQUALITY In the event of an equality of wins, to determine the winner of a section the Bowls SA Rules & Conditions of Play for State Tournaments will apply, as follows: • In sectional games, two points are awarded for a win, one point for a tie and the entrant with the most points shall be section winner.

Should two or more entrants tie with the same number of points, then the entrant with the greatest shots margin shall be the winner. • In the event of two or more entrants having an equal number of points and shots up, the winner shall be the entrant with the least number of shots scored against them. • If two entrants are still equal, the entrant who won the game in which they met shall be the section winner. • Entrant/s who receive a forfeit in sectional play shall be credited with a win (2 points and 5 shots). • Any entrant who forfeits the last sectional game, without justifiable cause, shall be disqualified from the remainder of the Country Carnival tournament. • In Singles sectional play, the number of “shots up” prescribed for the rounds shall be the maximum number of shots accorded to a player when calculating the margin of shots for the purpose of determining a section winner. LAWS The ‘Laws of the Sport of Bowls’ shall govern all games. LUNCHES A knife and fork meal is to be provided by venue clubs for ALL COMPETITORS at $12.00 per day. The daily catering cost includes lunch and morning tea. Lunch is to be taken at the appropriate time. All players are to pay for lunch when picking up their cards. INCLEMENT WEATHER & HEAT Inclement Weather In the event of the greens being closed due to rain – an announcement will be made from 7.30am on radio stations FIVEaa 1395AM. If necessary, due to inclement weather, to close greens at anytime on the first day of an event, the event will be cancelled. If necessary, due to inclement weather, to close greens on any subsequent day of an event play will be postponed and players will be notified of the rescheduled date, time and venue. Players MUST NOT contact the Bowls SA Office in the event of inclement weather. Heat The Heat Guidelines outlined on the Bowls SA website www.bowlssa.com.au shall apply. CANCELLATION AT VENUE If the Match and Program Committee has not determined that all play is to be cancelled and if weather conditions deteriorate at a club which has not declared its greens unfit for play for the whole day, the decision
whether or not play shall start, due to the condition of the greens, shall be the sole responsibility of the club’s greens manager or his proxy. All players must remain at the club until the Event Manager at Bowls SA has called off games. Games may be transferred to another club nearby and played on a reduced basis. CANCELLATION DURING PLAY When play has commenced and weather conditions deteriorate, the Umpire may stop play on appeal by a player in Singles, Skip in team games or after consultation with the home club’s greens manager or his proxy. The greens manager’s decision would be in regard to the condition of one or all greens at the venue. If play has been stopped it shall not be resumed without the Umpire’s permission. Play will be cancelled for the day if it is not possible to resume after one hour from the time of the last stoppage. SMOKING No player shall smoke on the playing surface. It is the responsibility of every player to observe this policy and your host club officials to ensure the comfort of all players in this regard. The Bowls SA NO SMOKING ON THE GREEN policy applies. MOBILE PHONES Mobile Phones are not permitted to be used on the green. PLAYER CODE OF CONDUCT The Player Code of Conduct included in the Bowls SA Member Protection Policy shall apply. PENALTIES The Bowls SA Board may inflict penalties or fines on any player or team for any action or behavior in breach of the rules and conditions of play or Laws of the Sport of Bowls, or where actions are considered to bring the game into disrepute. Any player or team that undertakes a game plan or strategy to achieve a result other than a win in a particular game being played will be liable to Bowls SA imposed penalties or fines. OTHER DETAILS Venue clubs are required to provide Managers and Umpires on all days allocated with the exception that the Bowls SA Event Manager will provide officials for the Finals on Saturday 4 April 2009.

State Singles Champions 2008-09 At Salisbury BC on Saturday 24 January the metro and country qualifiers in the men’s and women’s State Singles and the entrants in the Open Disability Section played sectional play to decide the Semi Finalists. With competition tight all games were eagerly contested; the eventual winners on the day in the men’s competition were Ray Schroeder (Murrayville RSL), Brett Hurrell (Hawthorn), Ken Wilcox (Kadina), and Simon Dorr (Payneham). The Sunday morning Semi Finals resulted in Brett Hurrell defeating Ray Schroeder 25-12, and Simon Dorr recording a win against Ken Wilcox 25-20. Brett went to an early lead in the Final with the 7th end score being 11–2 against Simon; and after the 13th end he had extended the lead to 17-4. Simon won the 14th end with two shots but the next 11 ends resulted in a margin of one shot per end (six ends won by Simon and five by Brett). On the last end Brett broke the trend and scored three shots to win 25–12 and become the Men’s State Singles Champion for 2008-09.
The Women’s section winners were Sue Madden (Modbury), Penny Landherr (Kensington-Marryatville), Marlene Richards (Victor Harbor) and Kerry Treloar (Berri). The Sunday Semi Finals saw Penny Landherr defeat Sue Maddern 25-11; while a marathon 32 ends in the other game ultimately resulted in Marlene Richards 25 defeating Kerry Treloar 20. In another marvelous exhibition of bowls, and after another 32 end game, last season’s Runner-up Penny maintained the pressure on Marlene to win 25–20 and become the Women’s State Singles Champion. The Open Disability section was well supported by members of the Wombats, family and friends. With the small field of twelve entrants drawn in four sections, each with a bye, players were required to play two games to establish the section winners. The Semi Finals resulted in a win to Glen Couley (Reade Park) against Trevor Verrall (Monash) 25–15; and Barry Charity (Clearview) 25 to Peter Waye (Port Adelaide) 5. A very closely contested Final saw last season’s Runner-up Barry Charity become the Winner by defeating Glen Couley 25–13. Penny Landherr

Region 1 South Eastern Entries in State events have been on the increase this season. Region winners were Bryan Vorwerk (Mt Gambier) from 27 State Singles entries; Wayne Prentice of Naracoorte RSL from a field of 16 in the Open Singles, and the State Pairs also from 16 entries were John Scudds and Glen Jones from Millicent. 24 teams from Adelaide, Waikerie, YP, North and Mid-Northern districts entered the Moonta Women’s Invitation. The winning team from Minlaton comprised Lorraine Young, Elaine Frost, Judy Buttfield and Nancy Newbold. During the day Region 2 Councillor Val Vawser presented Super Veteran badges to four members namely: Beth James who joined the Club in 1953, was President on three occasions and Secretary for a number of years; then became Country Councillor, Executive Member, Umpire Tutor and Coach for the (SAWBA). In recognition she was made a Life Member of the Moonta Club, the YP Association, Division 2 and the SAWBA. Mary Roach was an inaugural member and is our present Patron and a Life Member. She has been President and Secretary of the Club, Secretary of the YP Association, and is still a very active playing member. Barbara Bennett has been President, Secretary, Tournament Director and a Committee Member for many years. Barbara is a very active playing member and still one of our top bowlers. Pam Newman is also still an active playing member, has been Secretary on four occasions and a Committee Member for a number of years. President Sheryl Millard gave a brief and entertaining history of the club. It was a day out for the Warooka players when Yorketown held their annual Invitation Day in December, with teams from the ‘Windy Hill’ finishing 1st and 2nd. The winners were Fay Harris’s team of Mary Haylock (a ring-in from Yorketown), Marlene Halliday and Jean O’Brien, while the runners-up were Gloria Newbold, Naomi Mathews, Ellen Bull and Audrey May.

Region 4 North Eastern In what was arguably the strongest ever field of bowlers to take to Barossa greens, 22 teams from country and metropolitan clubs, including the four State rinks selected for the Loy Carroll trophy against Victoria, converged on the picturesque Nuriootpa greens for the second $3,000 Vine Inn Skins. After three qualifying games the four teams of Scott Thulborn (Nuriootpa), Steve Foster (Somerton), Tim Strauss (Waikerie) and Geoff Collins (Ascot Park) made it through to the Final.
In the Finals, Nuriootpa’s reigning Club Champion, Scott Thulborn, ably assisted by Matthew Allen, Bradley Klose (Marion), and Nuri’s own Stuie Forbes won seven skins to one to claim a tidy sum of $875 in prize money against the rink Skippered by Geoff Collins. Runners up, Steve Foster with Ron Gebert, and the two “Buddhas”, Scott Hocking and Ian Miller, whitewashed their Waikerie opponents winning all eight skins to land all of the $1,000 on offer. Broken Hill Bowling Club sincerely thanks Bowls SA for their wisdom in the implementation of the Open Gender Policy. The Club has an ever-ageing membership with some in their 70’s to mid 80’s and it was a pleasure to be allowed to call on three of our ladies to fill a pennant side this season. They are Julie Arnold, who played in 11 games, playing twice as a Skip (the team won an eight badge in the first game that Julie Skipped). Lee Johnston played four games, as Lead, and also as a Second. Teresa Hayes played three games as a Lead, and one as a Third. Open Gender Permits enabled our Club to enter a competitive pennant side; finishing in second position, after the Minor Rounds. Thank you Bowls SA. Region 5 Eyre Peninsula Port Lincoln Bowling Club was the venue for the women’s annual Region 5 Inter Association Fours where each of the three Associations fielded six teams.

After much checking and rechecking by the team managers the winner of the day was SEP with 23 points from EEP 22½ points and WEP had 2 ½ points. The winning side was delighted with their win as Eastern have won for at least the last five years. Region 6 Eastern The Pitcher Shield, a competition between Lower Murray, Hills and Lameroo & Districts Women’s Bowling Associations, was won by Lameroo & Districts; and Region 7 won the competition between Region 6 and 7. Twilight tournaments have been held at Mannum and Tailem Bend during December and January. Both proved to be very successful and were booked out – something very unusual in the tournament business these days. Region 7 Fleurieu & KI Five junior bowlers, all from different clubs, represented Region 7 at Strathalbyn in the annual Inter-Region match against Region 6 Eastern. Although winning only one of the four games played, Team Manager Brian Penny congratulated the boys on being selected and complimented them on their good conduct and the way they handled the slick 16 seconds green which are a credit to the Strathalbyn Club. 25 clubs were represented in the ‘Two Day $3,000 Classic Medley Pairs and Fours Competition’ held at Encounter Bay Bowling Club. 34 teams on the first day and 32 teams on the second day (a total of 264 bowlers) played four games each day; one game of Fours, two games of Pairs and following lunch a further game of Fours. At the conclusion of the two days two teams had won seven games each and shots up were then again required to determine the overall winners. With +57 the team from Murray Bridge (Alby Aay, Ian Oats, Allan Kennedy and Peter White) took the honours. Runners-up with +52 were the Hahndorf team (Leo Lambert, Kevin Spalding, Glen McGough and Leon Zander). Three Christies Beach members Joan Bonnett, Rose Gallagher and June McCulloch were presented with Super Veteran badges at the club’s Gala Day in November.

Joan Bonnett joined the club in 1990 and was on the Selection Committee for four years. Rose Gallagher joined in 1975 and was one of the founding members of the Club. She was awarded Life Membership for services to the club in 2000. June McCulloch became a member in 1989, has held most offices on the committee including President, Secretary, Tournament Director and Administration Secretary. Presentations of Life Membership to Enid McDonald, Des Kenny and Nigel (Digger) Nelson were made at a special ceremony at the Goolwa Bowling Club to recognise their combined 57 years of committed service across management within the club; and service as representatives within the area, region and divisional bowling organisations.

Enid McDonald, Lady Patron since 2007-08, joined the club 23 years ago and has worked tirelessly ever since. Her roles included Secretary, Management Committee Member, Ladies Facility President, 11 years as Catering Leader, Delegate to SAWBA, GSWBA, Division 6 Chairperson of Selectors and the list goes on. Des Kenny joined the Club in 1993 and has made a major contribution to the club in his long term role as Tournament Director for the extensive Winter Bowls program and men’s events over the summer period. On presenting Des with his Life Membership certificate, John Spillane described him as a “living icon of the Club”, and for the many hundreds of bowlers who attend tournaments at Goolwa each year, Des has become the public face of the Goolwa Club. Digger Nelson’s 17 years of membership has seen him give his time to the Club in many ways as well as 11 years as Treasurer, two further years on the Facility Committee and years of ‘being there’, wherever he was needed.
Region 10 Metro East To celebrate the 80th Birthday of the Payneham Women’s Bowling Club a Gala Day was held on 28 November 2008 with 160 players from all over the state in attendance. Special guests were Bowls SA Board Member Carol Boyle, State Selector Deanna Amos, Councillor Lesley Slattery and Jan Lind, President of the Hawthorn Bowling Club; and Past President Avis Harrison and Life Member and long time past Club Secretary Fran Arthur were able to join us for lunch and afternoon tea. Play commenced with a “spider”, then one game of fours before lunch and another after. Overall winners were the Prospect/ Broadview team of Stephanie Sims, Joan Prosser, Carol Prior and Janet Cocks. Region 11 Metro South Approximately 200 people were in attendance at the Marion Bowling Club when sixteen members were presented with Super Veteran Badges by Chairman Jim Bellingham. Edwardstown member Charlie Short, who turned 89 in December 2008, is the Club’s oldest active pennant player and is at this stage still very successfully playing as a Skipper in the second side (Metro 2 South) on Wednesdays and as a Third in the second side (Metro 1 West) on Saturdays.

Congratulations to Bunny Nadebaum, Parndana’s longest serving women’s member, on qualifying for her Super Veteran badge. Bunny became a member in the 1967/68 season. In 1970/71 Parndana joined the pennant competition. An umpire for 30 years and a very helpful coach to many new members, Bunny also held the positions of Club President, Vice President, Secretary, Tournament, Committee Member and Selector. She was Kangaroo Island Women’s Bowling Association Secretary during 1991/92 Season; and is still our capable Club Treasurer, an office she has held since 1993. In 1995 Bunny was awarded Life Membership of the Club. After 20 years she still very capably holds the position of skipper and in the 2005/06 season she was instrumental in Parndana winning their first Pennant Flag after 36 years.

Charlie was also an active member of the Bowls SA Past President’s Association for many years. State Pairs Men’s and women’s country and metro qualifiers came together at the Grange Bowling Club on Saturday 20 December for a day of sectional play to determine the Semi Finalists. In their final game for the day Janet Cocks and her partner Penny Landherr scored an “8” on the second to last end and went on to win 17-11. At the end of the day the women’s section winners were Lyn Prosso (Marion), Jacquie Vallance (Port Lincoln), Janet Cocks (ProspectBroadview) and Doreen Smith (Salisbury); and the men’s, Darren Farmilo (Holdfast Bay), Rob Perry (Crystal Brook), Mark Haines (West Lakes), and Brett Hurrell (Hawthorn). PARTICIPATION COVER – It’s still not clear!! There are still misconceptions within the bowling fraternity about exactly what “Participation” cover actually is and what it is designed to do. Only recently a long standing committee member of a local metropolitan club was surprised to hear that he himself was not covered if he was to be injured whilst playing bowls, even though his own club does have participation insurance. Therefore, please allow me to clarify a few facts: Firstly, what exactly is Participation cover? Basically, you need to extend the liability coverage of a standard business insurance policy to provide protection if you or your club are sued for injuring another person whilst they are playing bowls. The reason for this extension is simply because most insurance policies have an exclusion for claims that relate to participating in a sporting activity. Therefore, without this particular cover, your claim will be denied by your insurer and all legal costs and court related settlements will need to be borne
by the individual or the club that is deemed liable for the third parties injuries. Therefore, it is wise to ensure your club has participation insurance just in case you are held liable for injuring another person, whether that person be from your own club or from elsewhere. Here is where the catch arises. If your club does have participation cover, that does not provide protection to you as a member of your club if you were to injure yourself whilst playing bowls at a club that does not have the same extension on their insurance coverage. Basically the idea of a participation cover is to protect you if you were to be sued for being liable for injuring another party, not for your injuries themselves. Therefore, I would imagine you would be extremely disappointed if you were to injure yourself at a club that does not have this insurance coverage. Especially, knowing that anyone injured at your club would be covered by your clubs policy. This is a good reason to ensure all clubs in South Australia are fully
insured for participation related claims. So in summary, if you are a member of a bowling club and you are acting as a member of that club, and your club does have participation insurance, then you can rest easy that any liability claims will be handled on your behalf should you be deemed to be liable for another persons injury. Should your club not have this cover, then you are on your own!! However, if you happen to be the person who suffers the injury whilst bowling, then there is no guarantee the club or the member responsible for your injury will have any insurance coverage to compensate you for the costs associated with your injury. Perhaps a group insurance policy that includes participation cover for all clubs affiliated with Bowls SA and their respective members, is the answer!! So you’re on a committee! Being on a committee can be rewarding, interesting and onerous. It is not a minor matter to be a committee member of an organised club in respect of which there is a turnover of funds in any one financial year. Whilst liability for mistakes is relatively limited, it is not much fun if you are a party to such an action, or if you were not really involved in the decision making process, but have been roped into some problem due to the fact that you were a committee person during the year of the event about which the dispute may relate. Being on a committee is not quite as onerous as being a Director of a company. Nonetheless the Associations Act does impose obligations on committee persons. The Associations Act 1985 governs organisations which incorporate themselves in the State of South Australia pursuant to that act. Another alternative is to be an incorporated body pursuant to Corporations Law of Australia. Many sporting bodies, or charitable or not for profit organisations, find the Associations Incorporation Act of each State a more preferable means of running the activities of a club or body. Unincorporated associations have problems of their own particularly regarding the conclusion of activity. Most organisations have a Constitution and Bowls SA has a standard one available to member clubs if they wish to use it. It is advisable to review the Constitution from time to time to ensure that it is still relevant and up to date with changes that inevitably occur. To be a committee member you need first to be a member of the body. An officer of the body is usually a committee member or the secretary, treasurer or public officer which every club has to have. There are basic rules in the Constitution binding on members and those rules have to adhere to a basic content as governed by the Act. An Incorporated Association has the general powers to do all those things which you would deem to be reasonably necessary to run an incorporation including holding elections, holding funds, conducting financial transactions, all of which are necessary for an organisation to continue in existence. Some people are excluded from being members of a committee, for example those who have convictions in relation to offences in respect of fraud and dishonesty. Leave can be granted to enable persons to attend on committees despite these convictions and that permission needs to come from the Corporate Affairs Commission. Some organisations employ Chief Executive Officers or Secretaries and specific rules need to be made regarding the operation of those positions. As with most of these types of organisations, the committee meets on a regular basis, commonly monthly and discusses matters

pertaining to the running of the organisation. If you are committed enough to become a committee of management member then matters where you have an interest, pecuniary or otherwise, should be disclosed. If voting occurs you may be asked to leave the room. You may be asked to abstain from voting or leave the room while the matter is discussed. This is a very important rule and one that should always be remember and acted upon with the upmost vigilance. Any area of grey can give a basis for attacking decisions at a later date. Occasionally committees do things that are beyond their power. For example, if it is not within the objects and rules of the Association and an activity occurs perhaps with some financial consequence, then there may be an argument that the particular action by the association is beyond its power. The Act limits the effect of that doctrine in certain circumstances. Again a constitutional review on a regular basis can do away with any uncertainty in this area. Accounts need to be kept in such a manner and form that they can be examined at any time. The Corporate Affairs Commission has an overriding function of reviewing and supervising any activities particularly where there is a complaint about the manner in which an Association is run. An Independent Auditor should audit the accounts on a yearly basis. Some Associations depending on the turnover in any one year are required to lodge a periodic return containing accounts and other information such that the regulations require. These are tasks that should be attended to diligently where they apply. Any act which results in improper use of information acquired by virtue of your position in such an association. A committee team can make an improper use of a position held on a committee to gain a benefit pecuniary or otherwise or to the detriment of the association and an officer has to act with reasonable care and due diligence in the exercise of the powers to discharge the office of a committee person, secretary, president or otherwise. The maximum penalties for this offending can be up to $20,000.00 or imprisonment for 4 years depending on the seriousness of any breach. That failure to pay due diligence can result in a maximum penalty of $1,250.00. It is important to note too that a person who contravenes the provision of the duties of an officer of an association is liable to the association for any profit made by that person or to pay any damages suffered by the association as a result of that contravention. Most committee positions are honorary but it depends upon the rules of the association. Some executive positions receive a payment and again the normal rules apply where the person is an employee of such a club or an association, workcover, insurance, payroll tax and all those issues are very relevant matters for the association to bear in mind and proper accountancy and legal advice may be needed. Disputes amongst associations are not uncommon. This can take many forms and can be quite emotional and difficult period for associations. For example, due to some financial difficulties, a club suffered, the members became very irate with the organising committee who had set upon a course of organising it in a very business like manner with a number of
employees and staff, overheads and other things. When financial difficulty occurred, the association eventually had to be wound up leaving a number of creditors out of pocket. This set of affairs resulted in much ill feeling and many comments being made which were without foundation and led to a very poor time for that particular organisation. There were legal strategies available to resurrect the difficulty. In a second matter, a legal dispute occurred as to the validity of various actions of a committee. Supreme Court proceedings were issued. The legal costs were large, depleting potentially the limited funds of the organisation. After spending much of that money, a Supreme Court Judge eventually persuaded the parties to run fresh elections. There had been a number of activities that were questionable as to their validity (although no dishonesty) and the election had the effect of the association resolving its difficulties. The resulting committee was one which could run the affairs of the association on a joint basis. This of course does not prevent someone complaining about the new committee but in this case it did solve the problem. This was a political solution. Interestingly enough the lawyers involved had suggested that it occur well before proceedings had issued but the factions at the time were far too emotionally involved to take that line demanding proceedings to bring people to account. Early advice as to resolution is a good thing and when a dispute arises it needs to be considered very early on so as to avoid wasting member’s contributions on a legal dispute. Given the funding of most organisations you would expect that the funds of an association would be exhausted well before a matter came to trial. The practical solutions are commonly the best. So being a committee member of an associational club is not without its consequences. Australians have a fine record for contributing to sporting, charitable and community organisations, many of them run pursuant to the Association’s Act of their particular State. So if you become a committee member, appreciate your obligations and the consequences of your position. Attend committee meetings, contribute, question, and make sure that you cannot be criticised for failing to diligently attend to your role. There is no doubt that being on any committee can at times appear to be a lot of work but the reality is without people being prepared to put in the time and effort and to accept that they will discharge their office duties seriously and appropriately, many of Australia’s clubs and associations would come to a griNding halt. Next time you are bowling, spare a thought for those on the committee who assist in making it all happen.

Women’s Prestige Medley 19 to t 20 JJanuary 2 2009 009 With very hot weather, coupled with gusting winds predicted for the two days of the Women’s Prestige Medley at Murray Bridge Bowling Club, there was a likelihood of it being a very challenging tournament. On newly laid synthetic greens, teams from all 12 Regions, all wearing their Region colours, were divided into two sections of six teams to play a round robin of five games plus finals; each region playing Fours (15 ends), Triples (20 ends) and Pairs (13 ends). On Monday the temperature rose very quickly and by the second game, after consultation with the Region Managers and the Event Umpire, it was unanimous that the ends be reduced as the temperature had reached 41 degrees. The third game for the day was cancelled and on Tuesday play started at 8.30am to beat the heat and an early cool breeze allowed two games to be played before lunch. With a buzz of excitement, ten regions played off in the Finals (Region 9 Metro North having forfeited to Region 5 Eyre Peninsula), with Region 12 Metro West coming through to win the event for 2008/2009.

Fit for Bowling Bowling involves the use of many muscles and joints. Poor flexibility or soreness in any joint or muscle can adversely affect the way you bowl. Therefore it is important that you maintain or regain as much strength, flexibility and endurance as possible. The bowling action is essentially a transfer of weight to the front leg in a semi bent position. Balance and control of the trunk, shoulders and legs are essential during delivery for accurate and consistent bowling.
WHY STRETCH? Performing these series of stretches and exercises once a day and prior to your game of bowls, optimises muscle length, helps prevent injuries and allows more control of the bowls. Throughout a game of bowls there are considerable forces acting on your body which can potentially be damaging unless you have sufficient muscle control and length. The exercise and stretches below have been specifically designed for bowlers and address areas important for a consistent and comfortable bowling action.
THE ROUTINE Keeping heel down and toes pointing forward, lean into a wall so that you stretch your calf. Hold 15 seconds. Repeat three times each leg.
Rest your leg on a nearby bench; bend forward at the hip until you feel a gentle stretch behind your thigh. Repeat 3 times on each leg holding for 15 seconds.
Holding back straight (see diagram) and bracing stomach, lunge forward onto one leg as far as comfortable. Repeat 10 times slowly on each side. Raise your arm up overhead as far as comfortable. Lower slowly and do 10 on each side. Stretch each arm (bend wrist forward, palm down) 3 times, each holding for 5 seconds.
JOINTS The bowling action relies on strong and flexible joints and it may be affection by degenerative joint changes. The ends of the bone which make up the joint are covered with cartilage. Degenerative changes affect the cartilage and the underlying bone structure. Exercise has been shown to have a positive effect on these degenerative changes. It helps to nourish the cartilage overlying the bone and maintain good muscle control to support the joint during a bowling delivery.
BASIC POINTS In performing exercise there are some basic points which need to be followed: Do a few exercises only and slowly build up the number. Decide when and where the best place is to perform your exercises. All exercises should be performed at least once a day, and at the bowling green or at home prior to play. A gentle walk prior to these stretches will warm up your body. Allow a day or two between exercise bouts initially to allow your body time ti become adjusted to the routine. Increase the number of repetitions slowly.Avoid producing pain. Perform all exercises slowly and smoothly.

Place hands in small of your back and bend back until you feel a stretch. Hold for 5 seconds and do 10.
Clasp hands together and lean to side until you feel a stretch. Do 10 on each side.

Alf Sandercock Memorial Shield The Yorke Peninsula Branch recently conducted the inaugural Alf Sandercock Memorial Shield in honour of the late Alf, one of SA’s finest bowlers. The game was played at the Port Vincent Bowling Club and mixed teams from Northern YP Clubs and Southern Clubs competed for the Shield. Northern won in a close game and will hold the Shield for 12 months. Alf’s widow May, presented the Shield to Barry Fuss from Moonta and the Shield will permanently reside at the Maitland bowling Club, Alf’s home Club for many years. State Immediate - Past President Vic Brown inducted Roger Spry (Kadina), Peter Ward (Ardrossan) and Peg Sharrat (Warooka) into membership. Eric Bolton Bowl, Max Marshmann Shield and Craven-Nolan Trophy It has been a torrid time for the Southern Branch. After holding all three symbols of bowls supremacy for many years they have relinquished their hold on all three. First to go were the Bolton and Marshmann trophies when the Branch played Lower North at the Two Wells Bowling Club when mixed teams competed. Two new members were inducted, Margaret Gameau and Margaret Maylin both from Two Wells. John Talbot Invitation In early December the McLaren Vale Bowling Club conducted the 11th John Talbot Invitation Men’s Fours tournament with 42 teams playing two games of 21 ends each day. Players from 41 clubs throughout South Australia, Victoria, NSW and QLD competed for $2,000 in prize money. The first day produced 12 two game winners with John Bubner, John Hill, Ian Dinham and Ian Fyfe (Gawler) winning with 69 points and 40 shots. Runners up with 68 points and 47 shots were Barry Battams, Des Kay, John and Shane Bevin (McLaren Vale). Tuesday’s winners with 30 shots up were John Macnamara, Roger Bridgwood, Lance Cleave and Robin Binney. Runners up with 29 shots were Richard Souter, Ron Foulds, Bob Vowles and Peter Alexander (Victor Harbor). Over the four games there were four teams who had won every game. Fourth with 37 shots were Gordon Cawrse (Pialba), Geoff Robertson, Wayne Bartsch and Bob Booth (Happy Valley). Third with 42 shots were Bill Stirling, Wayne Haskett, Mick Dune and Brenton Treverton (Modbury). Runners up with 54 shots were John Macnamara’s Port Elliott team; and Winners with 61 shots were John Hill’s Gawler team. After receiving his prize John (who is a member of the Adelaide Metropolitan Choir) gave a short rendition of “Some Enchanted Evening” - a very appropriate response!

Questions 1.When determining the result of an end, the thirds move a bowl out of the head before the total number of shots is agreed. Is this permitted? 2.A player standing on the mat, awaiting directions from his skip accidentally drops his bowl and it rolls 2 metres towards the head. Is he permitted to retrieve it and deliver it? 3.During a match on a very hot day a player wishes to change over the two bowls he has been using for the two cooler ones in his bowls. Is he permitted to do this? 4.A game is being played to a time limit. Just prior to the expiration of the time limit, Lead A rolls the jack which comes to rest short of the required 23 metres. Whilst the jack is being returned to Lead B for him to deliver it, the bell rings to signify the end of the time period. May Lead B deliver the jack or is the end dead? 5.Before playing one of his bowls the skip decides to inspect the head. He starts up the rink with his bowl in his hand, but decides rather than risk dropping it and disturbing the head, he places it on the rink and continues on to inspect the head. On his way back to the mat he picks up his bowl intending to deliver it. His opponent says he cannot do this as his bowl is a delivered bowl. Is his opponent correct?

Answers 1.Yes. As shots are agreed the bowl may be removed from the head and placed in a group where they will not interfere with any further measuring. The number of bowls placed in the group should be agreed by the opponents, the total shots scored in each end should be signalled to both the skips and the seconds. Law 39.3, 4, 5, & 6. 2.Yes. Delivery means deliberately releasing a jack or bowl from the hand using an underarm movement. If the jack or a bowl accidentally slips from a playerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hand the player can pick it up and start the delivery again. Law 1.3.2. 3.A player is not permitted to change his SET of bowls during a match, but this does not stop him from changing bowls within the same set. Law 47.3.l. 4.In this case the end had been correctly started even though the jack had been improperly rolled (less than 23 metres Law 23.1 dot 3) Lead B should place the mat as described in Law 19.1 and deliver the jack making sure that it is centred, but player B should not play first. Law 23.2. 5. No. A bowl is not dead if it is carried by a player whilst inspecting the head. Law 27.2 dot 1.
