Congratulations!! You’ve finally done it. You’re a High School Graduate. You’ve got the world in the palm of your hands.

Keep it there by knowing the facts. • DAWN estimates there were 56,978 alcohol-related emergency department visits for patients aged 12 to 17 and 88,781 alcohol-related emergency department visits for patients aged 18 to 20. • One bottle (12 oz.) of beer has the same amount of alcohol as 1 ounce of hard liquor • Alcohol is a drug. It alters your mind, body and emotions. According to the Marin Institute, it is also our nations largest youth drug problem, killing 6.5 times as many young people as illicit drugs combined.

If you or someone you know needs help, call us. We’ll be there when you do

Congratulations to the class of 2010 Graduates: What will your hyphen say about how you lived? A senior reflects on lessons learned from a friend Graduation is a short time away and at that time you will hear a speech. In the speech you will most likely hear the cliche of how every student is going a separate path. Listen to that speech, and remember something else. It has been said that life is a hyphen. Someday, when you die, someone will walk by your headstone and see your name. Under your name will be your birthdate and your death date. The hyphen between those dates will summarize your life. It’s the valedictorian’s job to tell you about life after high school so you can remember, not so much to do your best in life, but to realize that life is a hyphen. The rest of our lives will go by as fast as our school lives have gone by so far. To realize how fast life goes by is the first step to living a successful life. Some people will measure success by the amount of money made. That isn’t right. All that money isn’t so good after you die, and we all do die.

GUEST COLUMN Brent Jacobson

Success in a person is usually recognized only after they’ve died. It’s a “you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone” thing. Success is measured by your part in someone else’s life. Recognize that life is short, and know that if you blink it could be too late to help someone else. I’d like to mention someone who knew this philosophy well. My friend, Conner Jay Knoblich, lived an adventurous life and, in my opinion, experienced success. He visited different parts of the world, and mostly he used his gift of humor to make others around him laugh. You’ll find a hyphen on his

headstone. His hyphen describes a life lived to its fullest. His memory is left behind in the hearts of those people he touched, those people he loved, and those people who loved him. Conner never got the chance to graduate, but because he knew the “Hyphen Rule,” Conner didn’t need a diploma to tell him he succeeded. The best of his life is left behind in us, in our hearts. That is a successful life. Conner’s hyphen separates a small number of years. We may live a much longer life. Will we make the lives of others better because we have lived? If you live your life with that in mind, in my opinion, you’ve succeeded. That’s it. That’s my point. I hope you take it to heart. Live life like it’s a hyphen and you’ll accomplish success and experience satisfaction. I would like to dedicate this to the memory of my friend, Conner,

Always be proud of your achievements and use them to fulfill your dreams!

Tuition savings plan is guaranteed OLYMPIA — Parents can save for college by enrolling in the Washington Guaranteed Education Tuition program. Over the past decade, tuition at Washington colleges has increased an average of 8 percent a year, with family income and investments falling behind, according to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Parents who hope to see their children graduate from college without assuming large debt can set aside cash to save on future costs. If trends continue, one year’s tuition and state-mandated fees costing $7,600 now will amount to more than $36,000 a year when today’s newborn is heads to campus. GET was established by the Legislature in 1998 to help families save for increased costs. According to state officials, 100 GET units purchased now are guaranteed to be equal to the future cost of a year’s resident,

GET accounts can be used

AdBuilder anywhere in the country to pay tuition at colleges, universities or vocational schools, whether public or private. Making the move easier Planning ahead and being careful when packing can help The Chronicle OMAK – When it comes time to move away to college, there are things that can make the experience easier. • Don’t put off packing or moving until the last minute. If you need to rent a truck or trailer, be sure to reserve it early. Try to move on a weekday, since weekends are the busiest moving days. • Pack smart. Move only what you need. Load heaviest items first. Boxes, packing tape, bubble

wrap, moving blankets and hand trucks are also essential to keeping your belongings safer and making your move easier. Consider donating unneeded items to charities. • Be safe. To avoid injury, always bend your knees and lift with your legs. Don’t text or talk on your cell phone while driving. While stopped for breaks, park in highly visible, well-lit areas and always lock all doors. If you’re using a moving truck, remember that it is taller, wider and heavier than cars or SUVs, so drive a bit slower and take extra care when making turns, driving under overhangs or near low tree branches. • Have fun. the move — play music, plan a fun dinner for after all the work is done and don’t let frustration get to you. Enjoy the ride. • Go green. You might be able to save on costs and be kinder to the environment by moving with someone from your area. • Keep the essentials with you. With most belongings packed away, create a travel bag for moving day to keep important paperwork, credit cards, identification, a change of clothes, drinks and snacks close at hand.

Party! It’s time to honor graduates By Dee Camp The Chronicle OKANOGAN — If you’re throwing a graduation party, it pays to plan ahead. Many families plan postgraduation receptions, barbecues and potlucks for their graduates. Be prepared for guests to come and go, since many people are invited to more than one graduation party. That also holds for the guest of honor, who may want to visit classmates’ gettogethers. While parents often foot the bill, they should remember whose party it is and be sure to ask the graduate what type of party — if any — is desired. A parent may want to throw a party, but the grad may prefer a quiet dinner with his or her immediate family. Some graduates don’t want to be bothered with decisions and details, while others want to plan the whole affair themselves. Some tips: • Set a time and date. It could be immediately before or after the ceremony, but another day certainly is appropriate. • Decide on a format and budget. The party could be basic, with cake and punch only, or could include a buffet, potluck, barbecue or catered meal. Your format and budget will be closely related. • Draw up a guest list and send invitations. • Come up with a venue. Are you having the party in your home or yard, at a rented hall or church, a restaurant, park or other location? Be sure to make reservations. If you're planning an outdoor party, be sure to have a backup location in case of rain. • Decide on decorations. If you'll need paper products (napkins, plates, etc.) in school colors, be sure to purchase them early or special order them since local stores' supplies sell out quickly. Special items, such as favors, tablecloths, balloons, mascot decorations, etc., should be purchased early. Many people go for high school colors or decorations, but some pick a theme related to the graduate's college selection, planned career or military enlistment. • Try to think of every contingency. Make sure you have enough charcoal, tape, extra pens, paper plates, a first aid kit, back-up bags

It’s all in the details

CONGRATULATIONS!

Attention to details can make all the difference in a successful party. Some tricks and tips for graduation parties: • Make a time capsule. Have each guest contribute some small item to be tucked away for the graduate. • Set out a guest book or piece of poster board for guests. Short greetings to the graduate can accompany signatures. • Have someone keep track of graduation gifts and givers to make writing thank-you notes easier. • Take lots of pictures. Set up a video camera on a tripod and just let it roll. • Be sure to have music, whether it's recorded, a small ensemble or a garage band of classmates. • Relax and have fun. of chips, beverages, ice, toilet paper and paper towels, carpet

spot cleaner, condiments, etc. Save receipts since some unopened supplies can be returned if you don't use them. • Plan where and how you'll serve food. Borrow tables and chairs, if necessary. Coolers, large tubs and clean wheelbarrows can be filled with ice for cooling beverages. If you don't want to use paper, colorful flat sheets or yard goods make inexpensive tablecloths. • Mow the lawn and weed the garden, if the party is outside. Change the bulb in the porch light. • Get some help. The graduate's family should be able to enjoy their own party.
