As we prepare for our next chapter, we remain mindful of the spiritual partners in our midst who continuously support our work. We have four engaged, devoted sisters who impact our community daily:

• Sr. Terry Davis: Sr. Terry is a spirited, fervent leader! A sister for more than 50 years and a former Notre Dame San Jose faculty member, she is revered for her goodness and passion for art. Her service in ministry reaches beyond California to Italy, Africa and parts of Latin America. She also serves on Notre Dame's Board of Directors!

• Sr. Carol Shoup: Sr. Carol has been a beloved member of our community for over a decade. Treasured for her kindness and nurturing spirit, as our campus ministry associate she encourages spiritual formation in students and faculty alike. Her warmth and passion for Notre Dame are simply contagious!

• Sr. Gillian Wallace: When strolling through the hallways of the Mary Beth Riley Center for Women's Leadership, you'll be inspired if you overhear one of Sr. Gillian's classes. A graduate from Notre Dame Belmont ′88, UC Berkeley, and University in England, "Sr. G" as she’s affectionately called, brings a wealth of knowledge and vibrance to campus life. Her greatest joy? Teaching freshmen about the Hallmarks of a Notre Dame Learning Community that shape our school.

• Sr. Rosalie Pizzo: If you are fortunate to be on campus during one of Sr. Rosalie’s visits, you're in for a treat! A graduate of the Notre Dame Class of 1952, she is commended not solely for her board work and service to the Diocese of San Jose, but for her joyful presence and institutional knowledge. Our community cannot stop boasting about her being selected as the 2023 Women of Impact alum honoree! She is iconic.

One of the greatest joys I have experienced as Head of School is the strength in our collective community. Cultivating empowered women leaders is achievable because of our shared vision and commitment to sustaining our school. As we navigate 2024, unite with me in our elevated charge — to give more students a Notre Dame education that will teach them what they need to know for life. As we continue to accomplish this goal, we continue to spread God's goodness in our community and in the world.

Generosity comes full circle for two Notre Dame alums

During the Great Depression, Sal Cristina made walkways out of apricot pits and traded fruit with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in exchange for tuition for his daughter, Lorraine Cristina ′35 Sunseri. The rancher was determined to put his daughter through school at Notre Dame, an education the family otherwise couldn’t afford. His commitment to assisting the nuns – and the school as a whole – paved the way for a longstanding association with Notre Dame that would span generations.

Sal was the grandfather of Pat Sunseri ′58 Schott, who has upheld her family’s tradition of giving back to Notre Dame, the institution that educated her, her mother, her aunt and several cousins. The Stephen C. and Patricia A. Schott Foundation has provided life-changing

scholarships to countless young students around the Bay Area over the last several decades.

The Schotts believe in the transformative power of education. "Young people want the American dream, and they work hard to get it," Pat said. The cost of private education poses a significant barrier to many families, which is something Pat and her husband are both intimately aware of.

"Steve had a scholarship to Santa Clara University, which is what motivates him to give back to education," Pat said, explaining that her husband went on to become a real estate developer and was a 10-year co-owner of the Oakland Athletics. "We hope the students who receive scholarships from us are able to make a positive impact in the community later down the road."

And that is exactly what happened when Laura Alvarado ′01 Diaz received a scholarship from the Schott family in the late 1990s. ND was her dream school, and the cost was the only thing standing in her way.

"I had my eyes set on Notre Dame and Santa Clara University from the time I was in 6th grade," said Laura, who was thrilled when she was notified she was the recipient of the Schott's scholarship. "I felt so happy and blessed to know that the first part of my journey would be a reality thanks to the generosity of some wonderful people."

Laura went on to graduate from Santa Clara University and now she is Notre Dame's front office receptionist, where she is the first friendly face to welcome visitors to campus. She and her family's lives were forever changed by the generosity of strangers, who later became beacons of hope for Laura through their faith in her.

The profound impact of her and Steve's generosity came full circle last October. While on campus to help plan their 65th class reunion, the 1958 Red and White Poodles reminisced about their time at ND.

Laura stopped by and asked if Pat was present. Tearfully, the two ND alums, who graduated nearly 50 years apart, embraced each other.

"Getting to see Mrs. Schott again after 27 years was a great experience," Laura said. "And I got to share with her that my son is now a second-year Bronco at Santa Clara University!"

The Schotts' multigenerational commitment to education exemplifies the enduring impact of a family dedicated to empowering future generations through knowledge and opportunity.

"There is nothing like the feeling of seeing Laura again," Pat said. •

Honoring Sr. Rosalie Pizzo ‘52 and Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins

October marked the celebration of our 15th annual Women of Impact, where more than 400 members of the Notre Dame community gathered in Downtown San Jose for an inspiring and uplifting program that honored Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins and Sr. Rosalie Pizzo ′52.

Our community honoree, Phaedra EllisLamkins, is an American social justice advocate, businesswoman, founder and CEO. Throughout her career, she has served as a dedicated labor and community organizer, committed to making measurable change. Prior to the luncheon at Signia by Hilton San Jose, Phaedra attended the Women of Impact assembly on campus, where she participated in a Q&A with students and shared inspiring anecdotes and advice.

Sr. Rosalie Pizzo is a Class of 1952 graduate from Notre Dame and a beloved member of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. For more than 70 years, her work in education, pastoral ministry, social justice and religious leadership has sought to empower the dignity of each person and to build up diverse communities of goodness, faith and learning. Sr. Rosalie shared about the indelible impact a Notre Dame education had on her life and, in turn, the lives of many others.

St. Julie was known for saying, "How good is the good God?" and Sr. Rosalie called this a reminder to center goodness in all that we do: "This goodness is in our hearts, in our homes, in our workplaces and echoes in the hallways of ND," she said.

Funds raised at this event support financial aid at Notre Dame, which benefits 25% of our student body, and helps expand access to STEM programs on campus. •

17 th annual ND Reads

Notre Dame welcomes author Reyna Grande to campus for daylong celebration of reading

In November, Reyna Grande visited Notre Dame's campus to celebrate the 17th annual ND Reads.

Each year, Notre Dame selects a book to read and discuss as a community of students, parents, faculty, alums and friends. Books are selected that explore and deepen a core theme in Notre Dame's Education for Justice and Leadership initiative. Throughout the school year, the book is also used as an interdisciplinary tool in the classroom. This year's book, "A Dream Called Home," chronicles Grande's heartfelt and triumphant story of navigating life as an immigrant, first-generation college student at UC Santa Cruz and aspiring writer in the Bay Area.

Some members of First Scholars, Notre Dame's program for students who will be first generation to college in their family, had lunch with Grande and participated in a roundtable discussion about their shared experiences. "It was moving for me to see first-gen students share

their favorite parts of the memoir with Reyna. As a first-gen student myself, it felt like an incredible fullcircle moment to bring her to our campus," said Susana Garcia, Assistant Head of School. Reyna offered her own stories as lessons and shared thoughtful pieces of wisdom and encouragement.

Later that afternoon, Grande attended the school-wide ND Reads assembly, which has been a longstanding tradition at Notre Dame. The folklórico dance group kicked off the assembly with a beautiful performance before Grande took to the stage to share an excerpt from her memoir. Students then had the opportunity to listen to a moderated conversation with the author and get their copies of her book signed. Students closed out the gathering by singing ND’s Alma Mater for the guest of honor.

That evening, the ND Compadres Parent Resource Group hosted a social before joining the larger group at our evening event, where community members gathered for a Q&A and book-signing.

Embracing the Call

A teacher′s journey into Education for Justice & Leadership

From an early age, Amanda Klasila had a gut feeling that she wanted to be a teacher. Her mom was a Physical Education teacher for 25 years, her friends' parents growing up were all teachers, and she always felt an indescribable pull to the classroom.

But Klasila's journey to teaching wasn’t linear. Her path to education is a testament to the adage that rejection can often be redirection. Educators in her life urged her to take a different path when she shared that she wanted to teach — teaching can be difficult, exhausting and often thankless. At first, she listened, becoming an English major instead of studying education. "After college, I applied for a Ph.D. program for Renaissance Literature," she said. "I got rejected by everyone. It was eye-opening for me because I realized it didn’t hurt that much to be rejected; I didn’t care as deeply about it as I thought I did. What I really wanted was to be a teacher."

The turning point came when Klasila found fulfillment in substitute teaching. It was a done deal. She went on to study education at the graduate level, while also working as a fulltime teacher in underserved Los Angeles Catholic schools through her masters program at Loyola Marymount University. "Teaching is my profession, but it is also my passion," she said. "What I love about teaching is that you get to work with young people who care so much and have so many opportunities ahead of them and you get to help them find their way."

Klasila's resilience and openness to redirection brought her to the doorstep of Notre Dame in 2021, where the mission of educating young women deeply resonated with her. "I went to an all-girls Catholic high school, and interviewing here got me thinking about my own experience in high school and how impactful it was for me in becoming a confident woman."

The rejection from doctorate programs, once perceived as a setback, became the catalyst for her to end up exactly where she knew she was meant to be all along.

Today, Klasila feels energized by her work and her involvement in the Education for Justice and Leadership and Facing History and Ourselves programs. She works to infuse the principles of these programs into the English curriculum, collaborating with fellow educators to bring a contemporary perspective to classic texts and amplify voices that are historically marginalized. "My colleagues and I did an audit of the Great Gatsby unit and took into account who was present. Who is represented? What kind of characters do we have? What are their backgrounds?" This audit gave them the opportunity to see where the curriculum was highlighting just one narrative and bring in other voices to create a more complete picture.

"Though F. Scott Fitzgerald may have been the dominant voice of that period, he wasn't the only one," she said. "Presenting additional voices to our students and having them grapple with who gets left out of narratives, and whose voices we can lift up, helps them identify flaws and work towards justice." The students' reactions during the reading, combined with subsequent discussions and connections made during class, exemplify the power of justice-based literary education. Klasila highlighted the importance of creating an environment where students not only learn information but actively engage with the material, making connections they can carry with them long after their time at ND.

"Her engaging lessons and open discussions provided in the classroom have you tapped into every single minute, and by the end of it, your whole worldview could completely shift! It's hard to walk into that classroom each day without the feeling of anticipation brewing inside of you," said Kate, a senior. Klasila's dedication to creating a dynamic and inclusive classroom fosters critical thinking, a love for learning and a sense of empowerment that extends beyond the walls of the school. She contributes to the holistic development of her students, shaping them into confident adults who make a difference in the world.

Her journey stands as a beacon for aspiring educators, showing that rejection can lead to unexpected opportunities. Notre Dame continues to be a hub for educators like her, committed to making a lasting impact on the lives of students through innovative and justice-oriented teaching practices. •

Milestones & Memories

Notre Dame alums from four classes returned to their alma mater to celebrate milestone reunions in October. The classes of the 1953 Blue & White Pixies, 1958 Red & White Poodles, 1963 Black & Gold Tigers and 2003 Orange & Yellow Flames were thrilled to return to ND on a gorgeous Saturday to reconnect, reminisce and share stories with one another.

Our alums started the day with tender moments of hugs, laughter and a warm welcome from Head of School Ashley Rae Mathis, then continued the celebrations with lunch. To conclude the day, students led tours of campus, including the most recent addition of the Mary Beth Riley Center for Women's Leadership.

We are grateful for the special gifts our alums bring to our ND community and for their role in Notre Dame's lifelong network. •

School Spirit at its finest Homecoming — A beloved tradition at

Notre Dame San Jose

The time-honored tradition of Homecoming at Notre Dame is our annual friendly competition between the classes, which amplifies class spirit on another level. The Class of 2027 Purple & Yellow Ravens competed in dodgeball against the Class of 2026 Pink & Teal Stingrays — and the freshmen WON! Then the Class of 2025 Red & Lavender Basilisks competed in flag football against the Class of 2024 Blue & Gold Dragons — and the seniors WON!

The next evening, Notre Dame hosted more than 600 students from 45 high schools at the "Wish Upon A Star" themed Homecoming dance. Between an amazing DJ, photo booths, 360 camera fun, refreshments and outdoor activities — it was a unforgettable night. We were blessed with a creative and dedicated team of faculty, staff and parent volunteers who ensured a stellar time for all. •

School dives into California's first season of girls football

The debut of an all-American classic sport at Notre Dame

As one of the fastest-growing sports nationwide, Notre Dame heard the call to bring flag football to Notre Dame San Jose. The interest in the Bay Area as well as our school community was significant enough to act upon and Notre Dame was determined to participate in what marks the first-ever season of California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) sponsored girls football in California.

Athletes hit the field with a healthy appetite of excitement and curiousity as they embarked upon a major competitive milestone for themselves and for our school. ̎Our team demonstrated great passion, dedication and saw tremendous improvement over the course of the season. We are excited for future seasons,̎ said Paul Lapke, Director of Athletics.

With flag football being approved as a high school varsity sport and also recognized by some colleges in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, it's an exciting time for Notre Dame to offer this to athletes and see where they take it. •

Marcella & Gary Gulmon honored with the 2023 L'Esprit

De Françoise Award

In a heartwarming ceremony at the Regent Donor Reception in December, Marcella and Gary Gulmon were honored with the 2023 L'Esprit de Françoise Award, a recognition of their unwavering commitment to the mission of Notre Dame and their exceptional contributions to the community.

Named after Françoise Blin de Bourdon, co-foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, the award pays tribute to individuals who embody the spirit of friendship, dedication and support. Marcella and Gary, much like our foundresses, share a remarkable bond that profoundly impacts the Notre Dame community.

Marcella, the longest-serving member of the Crab Fest planning committee, has demonstrated extraordinary leadership, particularly during the challenging pandemic years.

"We thank them for being hardworking, purposeful, proactive, joyful givers who are clear in their purpose to serve," Head of School Ashley Rae Mathis said during the award ceremony.

Gary has served on the Finance Committee of the Notre Dame Board of Directors since 2018. His dedication to proposing budget measures that enhance teacher salaries and increase financial aid exemplify his commitment to Notre Dame’s mission.

Beyond their committee work, Marcella and Gary have generously given to many Notre Dame initiatives. They support our Thirty One Women and Village Scholarship programs and they consistently participate in events, including Women of Impact and ND Reads. Their major gift to the Onward campaign, directed toward the endowment, ensures sustained support for Notre Dame’s future endeavors.

The Gulmons, described as hardworking, purposeful and proactive, embody the essence of the L’Esprit de Françoise award. The Notre Dame community extends its heartfelt gratitude to Marcella and Gary for their invaluable contributions, recognizing them as deserving recipients of this prestigious honor. •
